    This is probably the best video I have seen yet on this stance. I’ve never seen the double hip boost before. It’s remains a challenge for me but your video has helped greatly. Also, the video on how to spare with a larger opponent was just what I was looking for! I was disappointed that you don’t have more videos. I really hope you post more, and continue not to forgot about us mid-lower ranks.

    Excellent tutorial. You sound exactly what my sensei tells me to do to work on the kokutsudachi. Of course this stance takes a lot of practice to do well. All about muscles memory and practicing in front of the mirror. What helped me a ton was staying low with all my stances to be able to finally do this stance properly. Needed a lot of conditioning.

    Personally I like back stance. I was lucky in the beginning that my feet automatically went 90 degrees. So at least I didn't have to fight with that. You really teach strong fundamentals. Strong fundamentals are so important. You can't skip over things in karate because they are are difficult to learn. That's kinda half of it. Just like half of a belt test is surviving the belt test. Good job.

    This is a really challenging stance for me to get used to! I’ve been doing Ryukyu Kempo for 7 years, and this stance doesn’t even insist in our style. In our katas that would have this stance in them, generally we’ll either do a cat stance, or a diagonal horse stance.

    I move like a maniac in a freestyle kind of way. Seeing Karate and how movements surrounding self defence are named and executed, makes me want to focus more on specific movements. It is also a very good introduction at least, for those who are looking to have control over their body like a samurai and be better equipped thus physically and a great deal mentally for combative situations. Japan is nice! Much respect from the Netherlands. Osu! 👊

    I am from Guatemala city, Central America, I practiced only two years shito ryu, in 1991.
    And I started to train in 2018 at 47 years old.
    But its to dificult to me to learn shoto kan positions and this video its going to help me too much.

    I actually love this stance especially when practicing my Kata in front of a mirror. lol Perhaps I was too overconfident when I was young but who doesn't love this stance in front of a mirror.     About the weight relation between the legs: In Wado we were told the same 70/30, but now that I train traditional shotokan, it makes more sense to have a weight distribution of every stance 50/50 (even in Neko Ashi Dachi). It might look like one leg has more weight than the other, but you should pull the leg muscles toward the center of your gravity, which should always be right below your groin/spine pointing to the ground. After understanding this approach, which takes into consideration body dynamics, your stances will be more stable and therefore the punches more grounded.

    Only two functional requirements for kokutsu: 1) Your front leg cannot be swept; 2) you can resist you opponent's attempt to run over you from the front. Regarding 90 degree orientation: Your feet are shaped like wedges. The 90 degree angle should be measured against outside edge of rear (standing) leg, not the inside edge closest to the front foot. Those with flexible ankles can tighten this angle slightly more than 90. When you allow your rear foot to point to the rear (angle greater than 90), you cannot resist a strong force coming into your body from the front. Test these functional principles with an opponent. If your kokutsu cannot meet these fundamental combat requirements, it doesn't matter how good you think it looks. Build your stance and understanding from realistic testing, not from a mirror.

    This is s great tutorial. One question though- When you shift forward do you shift the front knee forward a bit to adjust body center first before you pull with the hips, or is it done at the same time?

    Thanks for the explanation. When I first learned Kokutsu Dachi in 1966, we did it with the feet at 90 degrees as you demonstrated. When I came back to train after I got out of the Army, Mr. Ohshima had adjusted the feet at little so the back foot would only be 45 degrees to the right of the front foot. I don’t remember ever getting an explanation of why the change was made and it always puzzled me. When I started my own Dojo, I continued to think about it and discovered that the back foot being only 45 degrees from the front foot allowed my back hip to come forward more easily for a reverse punch. I don’t know if that was Mr. Ohshima’s thinking or not, but it made sense to me. It could be that the adjustment was made because American hips tend to be not as flexible as Japanese hips. What is your thinking as to why your tradition has the front foot extended beyond the front knee. It has always seemed a vulnerable position for the front knee.I trained in a JKA (Nishiyama) Dojo for a year before opening my Dojo. Occasionally, juniors would ask me for advice on form. Once a guy did Kokutsu Dachi and asked my opinion. Instinctively, I told him to get his front foot back below the knee. Then I immediately apologized to him and told him that I came from a slightly different tradition and told him to ask his Dojo Seniors for form advice as I didn’t want to tell him the wrong thing.

      @@giuseppebonelli Great question! Mr. Ohshima used to say that there are two tests for a good back stance, 1. You can kick with the front let without having to pull your hip back (If you have to pull your hip back, your hip is too far to the front), 2. You can resist a certain amount of pressure from the front without being pushed backward (If you cannot resist pressure from the front, your hip is too far back). You have to work out where that exact position is on your own as it is a matter of being able to FEEL it. As I got older and (presumably) slower, I started to use back stance during Kumite. It worked quite well. If my opponent rushed at me unexpectedly, I could use my front leg like a jab to keep them off. If I lifted my front foot just a fraction off the floor, my hip would automatically fall forward giving extra force to a front hand attack or reverse punch, etc.. It was very frustrating to many of my opponents. Let me know how it works for you. Again, great question!

      before you go for a counter, you shift your weight to the back leg to make distance. That's kokutsu dachi!

    The kokutsu dachi is different in my style which is a Kyokushin offshoot. It looks closer to the nekoashi dachi(cat stance). Only the front leg is out further.
    In my original dojo--which was a Taekwondo based style) the back stance looked more like what you displayed in this video. Quit honestly these two are my other favorite stances.
    Speaking of my favorite stances will you ever demonstrate the sanchi dachi?
