I picked up on the solution through guessing and checking rational values, but I wanted to try and solve it algebraically. Squaring both sides and subtracting 100 forms the cubic x^3 + 2x^2 + x - 100 = 0. Since there’s a cubic formula, and I’d already intuited the answer, problem solved-ish. (I tried working through the cubic formula for the hell of it, and the keyword there is ‘hell’, this formula is awful)
A decimal point and a multiplication symbol are not the same thing.
