  • Well since winter is upon us and I cant fly the ultralight right now, I'd figure i'd put those giant hobbyking motors to work elsewhere! So we bolted the giant electric motors to one of those kids snow sleds and ran down the street in it!

      Surface area doesn't really matter for friction. What would matter is that friction between well waxed skis and snow is way less than between a shitty sled and snow.

    • @thuswaldner1
      @thuswaldner1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tissuepaper9962 You may be right but if so, why do catamarans (with dual hulls and less combined water contact area) always beat regular sailboats in a race?

    • @tissuepaper9962
      @tissuepaper9962 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@thuswaldner1 Hydrodynamic drag isn't the same as friction. It's much more complicated to model, and pretty much completely incomparable.
      Anyway, catamarans are faster because they're lighter, they're more stable, they have a wider base, which translates to more efficient use of the energy provided by the wind for several reasons. There are a multitude of reasons why catamarans are generally faster than traditional hulls.

    You have the greatest constructions ever, Peter. Have you considered a "vehicle" known as a Ground Effect Vehicle? It's effectively a boat with wings that are insufficient to lift it out of ground effect, yet powerful enough to get it clear of the water. Some designs include a hovercraft type skirt to break the friction on the water, allowing for quicker lift-off. The US Coast Guard considers it a boat, while the FAA considers it a boat, because if properly designed, it cannot climb out of ground effect. There are some huge Soviet examples on the 'net but the hobbyist size is more interesting.

    A dual rudder that was half as long but the same height as yours and air foiled before being fiberglassed would likely be more efficient. That's awesome however that you did make it work and you've inspired me once again with you engineering prowess. Keep up the GREAT work!

    You achieve more manoeuvrability from a double rudder configuration, a single rudder mounted in the centre only redirects half the air flow.

    3. serve while cold (=~=)
