Holy guacamole.... I have been practicing the guitar for three weeks. I felt that within the past few days I’ve hit a wall, and at times I’ve wanted to toss it out the window. This helped me move forward by coming to the conclusion that there are a lot of key actions I have left out during my practice sessions. Thank you for your explanation about the importance of scales and thank you for the demonstration!
I know this video is four years old, but what helps me the most is just playing a drone track in the key I am playing the scale in. It made an amazing difference and was much less boring. It also opened up the doors to doing some improv to make the scale sound musical.
Ive been running scales for a few weeks with a metronome, and have been wondering where to go next. Very helpful video and instruction. Relevant and well done. Some fantastic tips and just what I was looking for to help me advance to the next stage in my guitar journey. Love the content and the channel my dude!
Tony, thanks so much! I began my journey learning (re-learning) open chords, then on to barre chords, then working diligently on transitional speed between chord shapes. I even have the dreaded F barre chord down like a pro now. But, I have delayed moving forward to work on scales. Time is up . . . and your primer here on how to tackle it, design a practice regimen, is the way I am going to begin my work on learning scales. Brad in Texas
You're one of the best tutors on TH-cam IMO. Everytime I'm struggling with/want to learn something I always come to this channel to see if you have a video about it first.
DUDE, I HAD TO COME BACK TO THIS VIDEO FOR THE FIFTH TIME. YOU, YES YOU, FINALLY UNLOCKED THE SCALES FOR ME. I'M GOING ALL OVER THE PLACE, UNLOCKING DIFFERENT SONG PARTS AND CONNECTING CHORDS!!!
Thank you very much Tony. I don’t read tabs and hvn’t taken any lessons. But I hv applied that ‘pattern or shape’ concept and play by ear. It works great for me. An average geek.
3 weeks in newbie player here, have to say great teaching style my friend, easy to follow even for me!!!."the patterns "..genius!!!.thank you 👍🏾👍🏾 Be great if you could have the notes/chords on the screen..maybe??
Wow! I know I'm on to something. When I first studied the scales, I gave up because of the number of notes to memorize. Year later, I noticed that there seems to be a pattern of some sort. Anyway, this lesson is probably the best I've watched so far with regard to guitar scales. Good work man!
Daaam ! awesome video ! will put those tips to work later ! thank you so much, i had fun practicing them and it started becoming less and less fun and hope this will bring it back up
Thanks for the video.. scales have been coming natural to me, but this has made it very clear and how things fit together. I also really enjoyed your dialogue and attitude. You're a great teacher. Thank you so much.
Tony I watched your video's in the beginning when you first started and then I just got involved more with the piano. The two you did today were great. Cudos mate you have grown heaps in your presentation. Well done and keep going man you have lots to give. Eddie Ten Hoorn.
OK, so if the example is AM it should be la-si-do-re-mi-fa-sol. As the do-re..... is just another way to name notes in the scale and to each there is an assigned letter.
I’m like intermediate and focused on finger style way more then I should have. I’m finally starting to structure a good practice routine. So, I’m gonna try to learn scales even tho I should have started way longer ago lmao.
Bruhh I just memorize this joint in an 30 minutes. Ion gone lie I had a problem with my finger placement especially on the second string (Bstring) middle finger~ pinky finger before going over to the 1st string index ~ middle finger. I kept putting my index on that b string where the middle finger had to be placed..had to kill that habit
I CANT TELL what string your fingers are on so I really cant follow. You sound like you do a good job teaching it is only I can not tell what fingers your strings are on. DO YOU HAVE A VIDEO that explains the strings and frets ?
It is "not fun" not because learning is not fun but because of this cultural belief that in order for something to be fun, it must be easy, simple and wihout challenges, like most of the jobs one finds in cities. It is the manifestation of George Orswel and the culture of pleasure an comfort. So anything that brings a little discomfort, it is judged as "not fun". But that obsolete mentality is what separates a Human from a simple creature, not man nor animal... Not all those who walk in two feet are Humans. Humans love challenge and pain to certain extent because in them, Humans find DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH, those who do not like it do not know the value of difficulty, and they are not Humans yet. Thanks for the videos!
I'm not sure if I know how to sign up for your lessons, could you explain it please! Thank you so much, I love watching your clips, I've been playing about one year and I'm loving it.
Thanks for not editing out the slip ups. It’s encouraging as a beginner.

Do you mind explaining your practice routine?
It’s been a year since you said this but I have to second that comment asking for your routine 😁

Great tips, Tony. I particularly like the one for musical context by playing the i iv v progression followed by the scale.
I absolutely love great teachers. Thanks!

This helped me out a lot, never thought about just assigning the fingers instead of the frets

Hi all - in a major scale the 3rd note touches the 4, and 7th touches the 1. Every other note is a tone apart!
