I was just catching up with the videos over the weekend, and was wondering if you were going to take advantage of all that space above the garage. Guess this answers that question. Build looks amazing. Keep up the good work

I call that method of lifting beams "The Lazy Teenager"
I love the whole house, but that garage has my interest peaked. I can live with an 1800 sqft house, but a 4000 sqft garage is a necessity lol

Hey Paul - So excited to see you getting to the inside framing. I am probably the only female..(as I browsed down the list of posters) to post and maybe even be watching your series. My husband and I have been considering buying land and building something similar or a Barndomindium (sp) here in an area of Texas just southeast of DFW metroplex with enough land for both of our parents to have smaller 1K sq ft homes at some point that eventually could become rentals if necessary. I appreciate the detail that you provide and even mentioning some things that could possibly be done better and/or considerations that people should make before jumping in. I especially liked the video that you and your wife did on the bank that does the construction/in progress type loan based on the end value of the home. We did something very similar to this when we added our pool to our home back in 2006. One thing we will not be adding to a new place for sure, a tank for sure, but not a pool. I don't know of anything to suggest for a giveaway, but you seem to have a great selection of tools that you use and they all appear to be top of the line or ones that are definitely tried and true to get the job done. I, unfortunately, did not get the "craftsman" trait, my twin sister did. I am a CPA and she is the interior designer, who got the jack of all tradesman skillset from my dad.

My wife an I are looking to move in that general area in DFW Texas. We are currently in Colorado Springs and wanting to do exactly what you are talking about doing with land and houses. I’m looking for 5 to 10 acres, do you know what the going price is? Here in Colorado 1acre or less is going for $175,000 so we want warmer climate and better value for out money. I’m looking at doing all the building myself also. Thanks for any info you can provide on estimate of property cost.

    • @thekinneyfam7965
      @thekinneyfam7965 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

David Gobin - It really depends on what area of DFW you decide to land in. If you go north, close up to Frisco, but outside of town it’s pricier because you that is the HOT area where everyone is wanting to be /and or moving to from California. Lots of businesses transplanting to Plano/Frisco, resulting in a drive in need for homes in the area. But they also have the new PGA golf course and some other incredible things happening in Frisco. Northeast it gets a little less pricier and goes down a bit more as you get further to East Dallas. We live East of Dallas and we are only looking at land that has plenty of trees and area for a tank or an existing tank and around 2-10 acres as well and I have found a few 10 acres for $150K, but they are a just a bit further off of the highway than we would really like, making commuting long. And those don’t last long. There are plenty you can get for $260K - 10 acre lots in McClendon Chisholm area but they are flat land with no trees and no existing pond. So you have that cost to consider if you want to add a pond or trees around your home. Further North/West by Denton/Valley View and other areas it varies but Denton is a hot spot too because of the colleges there. Weatherford and Grandbury have both been hot spots within the last couple of years as well. Kaufman County where I live is now one of the fastest growing counties and our infrastructure of roads is being pushed hard. Feel free to send me a pm at lindykinney@cpaforney.com and I can give you more info. My BFF Stacy Beavers is a realtor in Denton and her husband’s Hamilton Homes company is the #1 home builder in Denton County. She can help you with land pricing anywhere in DFW area. Or I have a client that is a realtor over here in Forney area that does East Texas area.

A laser level or a nail gun would be awesome. I don't know if I will ever actually use the knowledge I gain from watching your channel but knowing how things can or should be done when building a new home is giving me a good idea if I ever do go froward with building a brand new home. I'm partial to old homes so repairs are always necessary.

Learning a lot through watching your videos. Going to attempt my own building probably in the next 6 months. I think something you give away would be honestly your time for people that haven't done it or are in the middle of planning and you could set up some sort of way of helping them walk through it and get through some hurdles especially for somebody that's never done any kind of real construction

  • @keithleroy

I really like your plan on both the house and garage. Only ? Is the garage upstairs in how you plan on redirecting in supporting the roof. Can wait when you get to video that part. Really excited in the framing of the inside of the house! Really enjoy watching, don’t comment just because I don’t like being negative 👎 on what you are doing because it’s your plan not mine. I might do it different but its your way of doing it and I want to watch how you are going to do and learn from you because it’s your project. Thanks so much on all you are doing and how you are teaching many people.

Loving the Mad County Build Series. You amaze me and provide inspiration on how you keep going as a one man show. You have inspired me to take on a remodel. Stumbled on your channel wanting to learn about doing plumbing drains under a slab and ended up binge watching your entire series. Now can't wait to see your interior build. One of the nicest feature about this build series is learning ways to overcome obstacles when being a one man show where you run into things that typically need two or more people to help with. Any kind of power tools is always a nice item to give away.

I very much enjoy watching your progress. Dreams of a similar (smaller) house led me to your channel. I had to smile when I saw you cut the exterior piece of steel around the porch and 2 windows. • @supremelawfirm

Have you considered a steel hurricane tie connecting the trusses to the new header? One of the hazards that occur during high winds is a "lifting" effect on the roof. Thus, with your metal posts fastened properly to the concrete slab, the trusses will end up being connected directly to that slab too. You also said that you would be modifying the web members in the trusses: removing the webs will compromise the geometry of the trusses, so you'll need to compensate for the weakness introduced by removing the webs. Lastly, when you anchor the bottoms of the metal posts, try to drill into the full thickness of the slab and utilize the entire hole with a strong anchor bolt. Because those anchor bolts were not set when the slab was still wet, a very strong up-lifting force could rip those anchor bolts straight up and out. Then, the entire roof could end up acting like a sail on a sailboat.

greeting sir: seeing you using those jack straps told me you knew how to improvise. i put up 6 foot high chain link fence and used jack straps to pull it at 4 points and it worked so good it was amazing. if you pull it too much you reduce the height from 6 feet so you cannot pull it too tight. i was using the 1 inch straps and they worked fine. i have received many praises in addition to being compared to fence installers and winning top ratings. btw, i had never put up any fence prior. diy's have to have common sense...........g

Been following your build. Learning a lot from you watching this build. I am especially interested in this interior framing section you have begun. I have developed an interest in recent years with free span structures, where the interior space is not having to support the main roof load. This type of building reminds me of an old industrial loft, where a designer or owner can come inside the space and have freedom to make it their own without having to be concerned with the roof (except for maybe a few supporting post). Thanks for the videos. Looking forward to seeing more of your build. -Rob

Looking good! When you do the garage doors, you need to find a Hormann Garage Door Dealer and get the Taurus 4250 model. Best door on the market. And depending on your head room/rafter configuration, you may be able to get high lift track to get your doors up and out of the way. Then you could use the outside of that bonus room wall as storage shelves.

One possibility to get more usable space over the garage is to use 'ATTIC" trusses when designing the original structure. An attic truss is engineered with a different web structure and cost a little more but is designed to maximize the usable space in an attic volume. I used these in the attic of my house and ended up with an attic room that had 8 foot ceilings and was 30 foot long and 15 foot wide. I added skylights in the roof and the framer installed 3/4 subfloor over the usable attic space. I had the sheetrock contractor place enough sheetrock in the attic for later finishing before they sheetrocked the ceilings.

    Hello from France.
Super construction, the garage is going to be huge. I can't wait to hear more.

Wow I've watched just about all of your videos over the weekend and have learned a ton! Can't wait to see what you do for your concrete floors. Our barndominium starts next month and we'll definitely incorporate a lot of the points you demonstrated in your videos.

I was just so proud of seeing you do such a wonderful precise job! Reminded me of my dad Roy Eubanks he ran Eubanks Construction down here in Mobile Al and always did a great job and did a lot of work himself at our own home. Good job on your hard work! Take a break sometimes! Lol

Marshall Remodel with another great video! You have me (and most likely a lot more) thinking I'll be able to build something like this in the near future! So thank you from all of us subscriber's watching and anxiously awaiting the next great video!
My vote is for a tree stand give away (looks like hunting is another passion of yours) or like C Dubs recommend a laser level.

Impressed with the work you've put in so far. Enjoying the videos and the explanations of how and why you are doing aspects of the work. I'm building my knowledge base as I'm hoping to do something similar.
