I'd watched quite a few of these DRUMEO videos, and normally people listen to the whole track, maybe more than once, and even make a couple of takes. Chad just goes into it in like the third measure. Insane!!! Just gets the groove and goes for it! No second take... amazing!
The thing about Chad's insane musicality is that he listens a lot to the rhythym patterns of the vocal parts. Go find any RHCP live perfo and you'll see that he is always matching and emphasizing Kiedis' vocal rhythmic patterns.
Chad has set a new standard for this Drumeo challenge. Normally the person listens to it once or twice thru, writes their part, then does a couple takes to play their rendition. Him doing it so well on the first pass, first time hearing the drum less track.... AWESOME!
you can tell he's not just a talented drummer within the context of RHCP, but also as a session musician too. Makes sense that he picked it up so quickly, he seems to be a very versatile musician.

I think it just shows that Chad has an developed an amazing feel for music throughout all those years of playing music and jamming along with his band mates. He seems to know by instinct when there's another part coming up, etc. His whole video series on Drumeo is so entertaining to watch. One of my all time favourite drummers. He might not be the most flashy drummer but I absolutely love his playing style.
the way he smiles right before he starts playing is like he’s thinking “oh, I know this one…”. Pretty sure he foreshadowed with the “I’m not telling you if I know it, I’m just gonna play it” bit.
You know RHCP have been improvising jams live for like 30 years. That's on top of Chad being a session drummer for countless bands and even non-rock artists. This dude knows how to improv well, I have no doubt he's never heard the song and just nailed it the first listen. 30 seconds to mars don't exactly have the most complicated song structure, so that helped too.
This video of Chad just speaks to his inherent musical ability. The fact that he can not only just start playing along without knowing the song, and can anticipate HOW and WHERE the song is going to go next, shows how much he understands how to properly compose a song.
Chad Smith is actually underrated. Sure he’s very well known for what he’s done. He’s not a metal drummer but the dude has major chops. He has this certain feel to his playing that dude could practically play anything with tribal feeling. Another prime example of this kind of skill is with drummer Stephen Perkins.
I seen them with Babymetal supporting, and they done the Judas Priest song 'Painkiller' with Chad on drums. The dude obviously can play metal. It's the fact that he's so quick to adapt to something he's never heard before. The way he calls it when to start drumming again because of the subtle volume increase just before the final chorus.
RHCP is effectively a "jam band" at their core, that's how they come up with most of their material (and IMO what gives it the energy) but THIS is what you're able to do when you're comfortable within that context. He simply listened to what was being played, and played along. It was absolutely fascinating to watch and the fact that he got "most of it 'right'" is absolutely outrageous actually lol.
Dude... There is "Built Different" and then there is Chad Smith, WTF!!! I saw him and the RHCP at the First Ever Rolling Rock Town Fair and they were incredible. Chad is an incredible drummer. Also breaking a stick while slamming the skins is next level even on Drumeo.

Thank you for nailing the time signature! I thought it was in 6/8 immediately just from the phrasing of the vocals, but I can see how it would make sense to a percussionist as 3 + 3.
This is absolutely 6/8. Zero doubt about it. It really doesn't matter unless you're notating it but the difference is the feel. If it feels 1 duh-duh, 2 duh-duh etc it's in 6/8. I've watched the original on Drumeo like a dozen times by now + a whole bunch of reactions. He was absolutely mesmerizing in this. Like we all know almost all of the people on Drumeo except for Sugarfoot did this challenge by listening to the whole track first at least once. This absolute maniac just went for it. And what a set: that ability to combine really quite perceptive listening and anticipating, with supreme confidence. A couple people have said in their reactions that they didn't believe it - but you can clearly see several points where he corrects some over and undershoots, and picks up things in the blink of an eye. Like the guitar licks which he matched by doing those tom fills - on the first one you can see he only catches the tail end of it. But even that is amazing as that lick is like 1 second long. I can't get enough and I've gone back to relisten to RHCP now :D
Imagine this guy on a Tabla ;) No for real this guy is genius and all he does is simply count . Jared hasn't even finished his lyrics and BAM here goes Chad.... So much fun to watch you react to it. Thanks for this great video 😉

It was one of the coolest and funniest Dromeo's video. Chad is outstanding drummer. He's legend.
blows my mind how easily he follows the energy level without a single misstep, I've watched this a couple times and it never fails to make me grin
That was impressive, I’ve never listened to 30 seconds to mars before, but his playing fit perfectly.
I saw that video come up yesterday, and I have watched it like, 5 times now, this is now my 6th time watching it and I still react almost exactly the same way you did. That broken stick is hilarious, I was like "damn, chad smith just broke a stick playing 30stm"
Man they need to get you on the channel I'd love to see what they would throw your way 🔥
Chad’s video is absolutely PRICELESS!!! He absolutely nailed it with ZERO regrets. For him to have it so close with minimal effort shows his true talent. I wish I knew how many times I actually watch that because it’s truly ridiculous. 🖤🖤🖤
Chad is a master drummer, groove and pocket is unreal.
Thanks for making this. Until I stumbled upon that video I had no idea about this world. I found your channel and other drumming legends. Love it. That Drumeo vid with Chad is the coolest thing ever. Glad your reaction was same as mine even if I know nothing about the drum world. Cheers from Myanmar
That vid was suggested to me by YT last night but I didn't watch it as of yet. Today I was prompted by YT to see your reaction vid and I'm glad I waited! That was F'en awesome! I'm not a fan of RHCP but I do like Chad....... That was ridiculous! I have broken many a stick in my time but never sawed one in half!
He is so great, and it sounded like it was the original. I absolutely love it out of all these first-time plays.
The OG song and his rendition are so similar, it is insane!
I am in awe. Wow.
I love drummers who take the initiative to start drumming right away. Chad Smith is so cool for this
I've watched the original on Drumeo like a dozen times by now + a whole bunch of reactions.
Wow what a fucking LEGEND!! I've watched this video of him probably 5-6 times and I never even noticed the stick break! Flawless recovery!
DUDE! TF, no way he did that without hearing it before, and omg I love this song.
The segue into the Mindlab Pro ad was AMAZING 🤣. Well done sir, well done.
The way he just breaks the stick off dead center at the strongest part is just demonic.
the broken stick was the effin' cherry on top!!
Having a lot of fun watching the original Drumeo vids and then watching your reactions.
He didn't just nail it -- he NAILED IT!!!
Seeing him crush that never gets old. Solid reaction, appreciate the insights with minimal pausing
Imagine this guy on a Tabla ;) No for real this guy is genius and all he does is simply count . Jared hasn't even finished his lyrics and BAM here goes Chad.... So much fun to watch you react to it. Thanks for this great video 😉
That's insane! I've seen this 2 times already, and each time its like- wow what a bad ass. Love the reaction too- your video on drumeo where you give yourself audio clues- that was amazing and you did a great job. I don't play drums- but it's so inspiring to see guys like you, and Chad, and everyone else do these videos. I don't know how you guys do it....,
Like im not a CP fan at all, but ive watched this several times already and the feel good that i get from this is amazing, to watch Chad get this is relatively right on the fly really hit me , so impressed how he picked it up like nothing , Will Ferrell better watch out !! 😅
Saw you on drumeo. Glad to see you doing well, brutha!
If you watch this series regularly from Drumeo, you’ll notice that Chad has been the only drummer that didn’t listen to the song all the way through before playing. Dude literally heard one verse and jumped in.
Also a great band to play drums to. Shannon Leto is an amazing drummer.
Sugarfoot did that too, but he didn't really accomplish what Chad did, IMHO.
0:30 thank you, Chad. Thank you.
I don't even play drums yet your reaction is so genuine and heartwarming. Keep up the great attitude in life!
A true master, I mean that was fucking spot on in terms of feel a vibe, not EXACTLY the same obviously but holy shit man…. Shout out to Chad
