I listened to this when I was extremely young (11-14), and related completely. I would live in a apartment of a friend, and they would care for me, feed me, everything. If it wasn’t for that escape, I definitely would be an addict or dead. Female comradery saved me from so much, when my parents decided they had better plans than raising us. I held on to the morals of my youth, and managed to make it through on luck a lot of the time. Still, being unmonitored on the streets, as a little girl, we were exposed to so much. We learned independence, distrust, and foolishly befriended dangerous night life. Prostitutes would flock to us and our youth, and men would speak to us like grown women. Obviously, we didn’t do the right things 100% of the time, we were kids, but once my parents reached out to suddenly take responsibility for us, it was too late. I didn’t need their parenting anymore. It felt like a disrespect to me. It was an insult to my intelligence, to try and taunt us with the hope of momentary affection, all in the hopes that you will lie for them. People treat you like an ungrateful child, when in reality you are perfectly aware that your parents are simply manipulating other adults for pity, and opting to play house long enough to impress society. When the parties end, and photo shoots stop, us kids will be abandoned in an empty house again and it will be back to coming home to find the doors locked. They only work to bring your guards down, just to dump you at your most vulnerable and unprepared state. After enough of that, you learn to fight against it entirely.
