  • « March - Song of the Lark » is the 3rd piece in Tchaikovsky’s piano suite The Seasons Op. 37a, portraying each month of the year in music. This Song of the Lark is not to be confused with another one, also by Tchaikovsky, published in his Album for the Young, Op. 39: the difference between the two is night and day. This one, played by Olga Scheps (@olgascheps), is very melancholic and pensive, while the other one is really merry. Two ways to portray March: in Op. 37a, the prolonged end of a harsh winter; in Op. 39, the fresh beginning of a joyful spring ahead. How come the lark is the common denominator?
All 12 works from The Seasons (1876) are preceded by verses of great Russian poets. In this case, the editor Nikolai Bernard chose the following verses by Apollon Maykov: « The field shimmering with flowers, the stars swirling in the heavens, the song of the lark fills the blue abyss ». These verses resemble the Lark Song by Glinka (1826), often called the father of Russian classical music. It has been transcribed for piano by Balakirev in 1864. So it’s certain that Tchaikovsky had this in mind when he wrote this Andantino espressivo, really quiet, not at all a powerful display, but a cantabile much more intimate than the Glinka-Balakirev version which is an ode to the grandiosity of Russian landscapes and to the power of love. The lark is a bird which is etymologically celebrated for its singing qualities, at least in the Gaulish language « alauda » (lark = alouette in French) means « great singer ». Tchaikovsky sheds light on the melodic line rather then the brilliancy of the lark - that, he would do in Op. 39 with a flurry of acciaccaturas. So the lark is the common denominator because it’s a typical Russian symbol of tuneful singing and spring, the romantic season. Tchaikovsky took the romantic cue and thus made a romantic music miniature.
