- 4 years ago to the day I posted the top speed run on a completely stock 2008 Pontiac G8 GT.
Now fast forward and over the course of those 4 years a lot of time and effort has gone into the build and with it producing about double the amount of horsepower it had before, we're going to go on another top speed run.
Car Specs:
• Stock CI 6.0L L76
• Magnuson TVS1900
• Roto-Fab Cold Air Intake
• Port and Polished Stock Heads w/ all New Upgraded Valvetrain
• Custom Cam
• ARH 1 7/8 Longtubes w/ High Flow Cats, 3" Catback & X Pipe
• Corsa Mufflers
•Stock Torque Converter, Rear Gears, Suspension, and OEM Wheels & Tires
• We had an accident with the car leaking because a firewall boot wasnt installed after running wires for the gauges. So the carpet is out of the car but I wanted to compensate that by having more gas in the tank (3/4) vs (3/8) on the stock run. The extra weight will more than make up for the difference with having the carpet out. All the seats are in, spare tire, everything like before.
*Noticed something interesting while doing this and maybe someone has an answer as to my it does this. Watch the video and you'll see what I mean.
You must have modded the drivers seat to hold those giant nuts. Love my G8 and hope to one day have forced induction.

@@BigBlock632 yes i know what you mean my ford flex was limited at 110 and i jus entered 4th gear and its a 6 speed. Now it goes 143 after i did a tune. But you might wanna get a tune if you havent because it can possibly cause engine failure from that jus be careful. Also you want to make sure you have the right tires on youre truck going over the limited speed because that can also be a problem.
@@BigBlock632 I think it's the rear gears holding him back. He says he has stock rear gearing in it, and I've heard with a Camaro SS rear swap G8's are capable of 200 mph.
How would a limiter be removed ?
The police definitely aren't going to catch you. Sick G8 man. My dream is to own one of these one day. I have a 2008 Grand Prix GXP but it just doesn't compare to the appeal of the G8

My cousin had a 07 GXP and I wanted one as well, but instead I got a 06 Monte Carlo SS 5.3l v8 and the all around platform of the G8 is a dream. An affordable-ish 4 door with a LS based motor and a 6 speed auto out of the Corvette's
Epic Sports North went from a 05 gp gxp to a 09 g8 gt, night and day difference I’m saving up for headers & a cam to get 400whp

Its 2020 and I still have my Pontiac G8 GT that I bought new in 2009. Last year I had the car heavily modified. It is very similar to yours except I am running the Magnuson 2300 Supercharger, with E85, Bosch Injector Dynamics 1050 fuel injectors, dual fuel pumps and meth. I had my speed shop retune it without the 140 mph governor and the rev limiter. I just have to be careful not to run it past the new redline of 6350 rpm. I also had the suspension beefed up with cradle bushings to prevent wheel hop while under hard acceleration. With the new coil overs it sits 3/4 inch lower than stock. Its was dual tuned on the dyno with 93 Octane and 6 pounds of boost and E85 with meth and 12 pounds of boost. The 93 yields 585 hp and the E85 with methanol yields 715 hp. It was tuned with HP Tuners Software on the Dyno Jet. The fastest I've had it is 154 mph in 5th gear. It should top out around 185 to 190 with no problem. The car was rock solid stable at 154. After 11 years I still love the G8. It's a 4 door monster. Thank you for the great video!
I am 580 on LSA roots with ls9 cam, long tunes, 8lbs on E85. Not porting. Lots fuels mods. Waiting for id1050s and will be putting dual aem 340pumps with vaporworx and adding boost. Never been over 138 but no longer governed but all I am short is blower cam for 700+. Have afco cooler on shelf as well.
@@izaacify I'm on a torqstorm setup. 3400rpm stall. Heads Cam stock bottom end car on e85 the car supposedly made 642whp uncorrected 692 corrected on 12lbs of boost but I don't think that's right lol. My car pulls a lot harder than this car in the video does while I'm on 93 octane and its walked full bolt on V3 E85 CTS-V and only to a fender to a 800wheel 10speed Mustang while on e85. somehow i think the converter is gives a way off accurate reading on the dyno because of the stall. A bolt on e85 C6 ZR1 is about an even match for my G8 and that's if the driver is a well above average on shifter

178m.p.h not bad! So far in my Bone stock GXP 146 m.p.h with a bad coil pack and down cylinder #3. Have since had that fixed here in Florida

All I can say is DAMN! I just watched both of your top speed videos back to back and could not believe the difference the blower made. I was finally able to find a 09 GT for sale in my area and jumped on it. Right now it's fast enough stock, but just in case I start needing more what did it cost to mod your car up?

That occurrence at the end is very odd. Perhaps a speed limiter maybe? Very unusual.

@rtheck, Yes I understand that the video is a year old and you probably have overcame the issue but from my experience with the 6l80e is it is mechanically limited to the top of fifth. I am not sure why you are bouncing at 5.5k other than it is in the tune but it will not shift into 6th at those speeds.
Kenneth Gordon thats what am thinking too, the 4L60E does the same thing at 3rd speed it doesn't shift to 4th. But that can be fixed with a tune. @rtheck have you tried up shifting and gradually going pass the 180 mark ? If it bogs again at 180 on higher gear it's not a transmission issue. Just try up shifting and gradually giving it gas up trying to get to the 180 mark.
BTW, how much power and torque does this make?
I did some research on it, supposedly the input shaft speed maxed out in 5th like this is too high to allow it to shift up into 6th. Computer limitation maybe? Its been a hot minute, if I find the thread ill link it in here

For the speedo I'd say one of three things, either top speed limiter, max rpm for gear, or uneven road giving a little wheel spin
bread fan well the speed limiter has been changed to a value the car will never hit since you can't just turn it off. I think the max rpm for gear/ being mechanically limited to 5th is what it is
rtheck either way looks like a nice setup, it's amazing what some extra air flow can do for an engine
I don't run at top speeds like that, but recently I have noticed the digital speedometer seems to be 2mph lower than the gauge.
+ExcelsiorDDZ Yeah I've noticed that mine will be at 60mph but the digital speed says 59?
+rtheck gm has this on most of there vehicles where the tac will say 65 or whatever but you're going a little slower to prevent speeding tickets.

Is the G8 GT governed from the factory at around 175 mph? You can tell that the car would keep going for a while before topping out but it looks like it's hitting a governor right at 175.
Ryan Lange the car was factory governed at 137-138. It was tuned with all the speed governers raised since its not just a simple on and off opinion but it looks like something was overlooked

Looks like a speed limiter was hit at the end the tune needs to be checked.
+Norm Nichols yeah the trans tune hasn't been done yeah but when it was tuned back in 2014 the trans was set to max. Then I was retuned again a few months ago and I asked my tuner about it and he said everything is maxed on the trans side so he doesn't know. Shift points and firmness haven't been touched yet
when I first got my programmer (94 Z28) I upped the shift points but not rev limiter. I already was shifting at 6k and that is where the factory rev limiter happens. So now my car was hitting the rev limiter for a brief part of a second while the car still was accelerating a few mph to get to the shift point I had set. lol I hear people doing the same at the dragstrip now and then. hard running car bro. nice
Can you explain the 5th gear issue at 5,500 rpm? Similar issue with my N/A G8 (not at 180ish because of taller rear gears)
I'm not really sure myself, everyone tells me its the governor and unless my tuner forgot or overlooked something, they told me that its been edited for a higher speed since its not simply turning it off or on. Some people on here have told me that its a mechanical limiter/limitation in the transmission. Supposedly it won't up shift out of 5th at wide open at that speed

@@K_M_M_G the goal was to be able to hit 200mph and with stock gearing and the way it was pulling i think its possible but then to just hit a wall at 180 was depressing for sure. Oh well its plenty fast in a 4 door sedan lol
Hey, quick question, don't know if you'll even see this, but I have an opportunity to get a G8 GT, but it has fairly high miles. Have you gotten your G8 up to the 120k mile mark, and if so, what issues have you had? What issues should I look for?

Ben Kuyt thanks for the feedback! I'm just under 80,000 miles as of right now, stored away for the winter.
Obviously your basic routine maintenance items like oil changes. At 120,000 miles, if they have drove it spiritedly, the differential fluid should of been changed at least twice. Trans fluid should of at least been changed once and filter(unfortunately no dip stick to check level) coolant flush would be nice too.
The man things I have come across is the front control arm bushings. Mine went out around 40-50k miles. They are non replaceable meaning you have to replace the whole arms out, or you can press the old bushings out in the arms and upgrade to polyurethane ones like I did. Other thing is if they have did a d.o.d delete (displacement on demand) kit to it. It's actually called AFM (active fuel management) but they are the same. The lifters are special and they lock into place so it can shut down cylinders. After so many miles they just fail. It really varies, some at 30,000 miles, mine never went out even at 69,000 miles. Torn down the engine for the upgrades in the video so it never failed. Hope this helps!
I wonder if its the cam timing causing it to hit the limiter. My 454 in my 99 crew cab obs does the same thing. i cant run past 101mph. Until i change the can that can turn higher rpms.
Hum that's a possibility, good buddy of mine turned it, very reputable and has worked for big companies. Safe tune for sure so I'm not sure. Also had comments stating the trans is mechanically limited to 5th at wide open?

could be the speed limiter it sounded like it was cutting fuel more than slippage, the rpm drops rather than gains suggesting limiting rather than slippage?
I also believe if memory serves me, the G8 with the 6l80e will not shift into 6th gear wide open or past 150/160ish even after tuning. I believe the transmission is mechanically limited.

No I havent, I havent looked into it anymore just bc I dont plan on spending much time at that speed haha. My engine tuner said you dont simple turn it on and off, you enter a higher value so I know they looked at it. Then my builder retuned it and said they were changed, trans tuner checked them as well. So I'm going with what some people have told me, that its mechanically limited to 5th at wot. I havent tried doing manual mode to see if it up shifts or not.
rtheck 6th is hard coded to not work above like 120mph. It won’t upshift to 6th at those speeds. It’ll even force downshift to 5th above 120mph.

Well the kit i bought was $6500. That was like 8 years ago and there were rumors that they were discontinuing them shortly after I got mine. So if that's true they will be expensive if you can find one

Theoretically no it wouldn't because sport mode is more like a road course driving mode where it holds a gear around turns instead of downshifting all the time. I'm my case it would help slightly/ be more of a fun experience because I had sport mode tuned to have faster and firmer shifts

it cuts at 180 damn i found an 08 its kinda rough shape trans needs to be gone through the inside is kinda rough headliner falling some box hanging in the passenger floorboard and steering wheel looks like someone tried eating it and the plastic thats on the side of the seat that has the seat controls in it is half ripped off

I have read the stock bottom end can take 600 h.p.six bolt main 8 qt.oil pan it's built for speed. And it likes it.
I hadta replace the 'harmonic balancer' at 100K, methinks you do NOT have that problem anymore! Hehehe.
I may have shared this before, but My G8 GT is black and this Mad Max Interceptor version is soo familiar. Right? Richard Race no but I has hoping someone could tell me. the speed limiter has been set to a speed I will never reach since you have to enter someone. someone on here posted they thought that's trans was limited mechanically in 5th gear?
rtheck It almost looks like it could be suffering from a tune related issue. Are you monitoring the air fuel ratios?
Richard Race air fuel ratio is 11.3 on the dyno. my gauge was reading 10 so we think the last tuner was tuning on a bad o2 sensor so being so rich it prob fowled out the sensor. so I don't know what it is around 180, but shouldn't be much different. fuel is another possibility people are saying, my current tuner (one that noticed it was tuned wrong and the gauge was off) thought fuel and he thought we went with 58 lb injectors but we did 60s. the fuel pumps can support 800 HP easily

You need a computer tuner for it man. It will also remove your governor just by reflashing the ECU :)
I have one. You don't simply remove it either, you simply enter a new higher value which its already set at. It still does it?
@@rtheck thats weird man the cobb access Port on my Subaru STI completely removed the governor/speed limiter. Most tuners I'm aware of completely removes the limit of speed.
@@3931aaron well on GM based stuff using hptuners, it's not simply an on or off switch or option to select. You enter a value for it and I think the highest value you can enter is like high 300 to 400 kph, something like that. 322 kph is 200 mph so it's set at something it could never hit
