NEVER use the fast forward button. You are not able to see hazards such as storms and pirates. Your ship arrives in a town battered and bruised and you don't know why. This film demonstrates that very clearly. Use, very fast, if you want speed. At least you'll be able to see the storm looming over your port bow, and hopefully avoid it.
Thanks for a fantastic 16 mins on a game that I know well and love. I've been playing this game for over ten years. I call myself an experienced player. It is possible to reach patrician level in less than two years, but you have to be ruthless. You need to own businesses, build wells and roads in your hometown. Actively hunt pirates. Take their ships, repair them if necessary and sell them. You must be a member of the guild in the town in which you wish to sell. This makes you lots of money. I don't think I'll ever get bored with this game. There are so many capitalistic opportunities. The best way to get started if you are new to the game is probably to select the first campaign. I would also urge you to take the sea battle tutorial. I took that several times before I got the hang of it but if it means you win why not take the time. For those a little more experienced the single game is the way to go. set the parameters to high for pirate activity, starting capital and number of ships. Low for everything else. Have fun. I still do
I have played this for a while as well. and would like to see more videos. 1. "you have to be ruthless". You actually get "ruthless" as a title by doing a lot of piracy. But that is really not the way to go to achieve rank. I would rather say successful. you get this title when reaching 1,6 mill in company value. 2. take ships and sell them? well, you don't get that much from each ship so I would rather reccomend just selling goods like iron goods and skins. you will get 300k in cash in no-time! even with 2 ships. 3. as far as I'm aware, being a member of the guild is only neccasary to become travelling merchant and therefore I do it in my hometown. can you specify the exact benefits of being a member of the guild in a town? does it boost profit? how? I checked on a savegame of mine and I had this: 1 year and 2 months: rank patrician 1 year and 7 months: rank lord mayor 2 years and 1 month: company value: 8 mill in cash: 4,5 mill total ships: 19 daily production value: 40 k profit last 4 weeks: 1,1 mill (income 2,8M. cost 1,7M)
I do actually still play this game! It's great for LAN parties with friends and family. One of these days, I'll get to Patrician IV... probably by 2017.
Patrician III still holds up and is a fantastic game. It was your original review that sold me on it and I have played it to death since. I have recently branched out to Patrician IV, Port Royale 3 and The Rise of Venice, but always come back to Patrician III due to it's more complex and rewarding gameplay.
What do you think of Patrician IV? I've thought about it but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'm hoping for a smoother interface with all the complexity.
Cameron Goble The game is really good, although it does get a bad rep due to the less complex gameplay. I think it was made to attract a wider audience. The main differences is the limitations you hit. For example - you cannot build a trading post in another city until you hit a certain rank. It is like having mini goals you need to fulfil before you progress further. Where as Patrician III your only limitation is your reputation and money thus making it a more open ended experience. I am currently enjoying Rise of Venice and its expansion very much, which is a similar theme. It seems to be an era FPS titles so this particular genre gets very little look in and has more of a niche audience. As well as being a huge Civ V fan I do love these other trade simulation games.
@@killtie15 Fun story, I actually just installed it two weeks ago. I even played it! I like it a lot. Just enough improvements to make quality of life better, left all the best gameplay intact. Thanks for asking!
I bought the game without going through your link; I did this before the 15:25 time frame in your video. I do not see any link in your video to gog.com anyway however.
Can you do another review, specificly about auto trading, having an trade office manager, grow population...? I know how to raise population and money but I've read there are much easier ways than that... Can someone help me please?
If you still need help there's patrician 3 discord server now that still active and got some of the great guide, tips and trick you can't find anywhere. There are much easier way to set up traderoute that you you can just leave it running and only adjust it atter every 1000 population grow. Very usefull to avoid premature baldness from playing this game lol
Is this game good for just casual pick and play for a 15 minutes and pick it up later a week from now and so on and so forth? I am looking for a nice casual business simulation.
You might be able to play it like that, but it has this great "just one more trading route run" thing to it that compels me to play for hours. And there are lots of things to do in town if you want to go that deep, which can help your rise in status. But honestly, sometimes I just fire it up, make a few trades, and I'm done.
I don't think you can go wrong for $1. Nice choice. :) This wiki looks pretty good once you've got the basic controls down. Trust your tutorials for a little while, then here: patrician3.wikia.com/wiki/Patrician_III_Wiki
I have played this game for years and am a really BIG fan. tried patrician IV, but I thought it was a bad mixture of patrician and port royal. had some laughs looking at your review here. granting loans WAY to early and marrying WAY to early. But I guess you did it to show the features of the game :) You mentioned that you haven't got to patrician, yet. well, you need 900k wealth and a whole lot of reputation to get there. still, it's managable. here's a few tips. start with making money (build reputation later). The easiest way to get loads of money in the start is to buy and sell iron goods and skins.buy iron goods in lubeck and stockholm (sometimes reval) and sell it in other towns. Buy skins in reval and riga, thereby sell it in other towns. These are valuable goods with high profit margins. next? start producing. what? perhaps start with beer. everyone needs beer. how much? every town has a market hall. it shows the consumption and production of all goods in the particular town. In the beginning most towns consumes 60 barrels of beer per week. so if you have enough ships and you decided to cover 5 towns you should produce about 300 a week. 300 x 20 (profit margin) = 6000 coins a week in pure profit right there. I see many asks for tip on gameplay and so on, therefore I will give you a trade route that goes over 6 towns and covers most of the goods in production and consumption, making it a gold mine and makes the towns grow. STETTIN (hometown) produce beer, timber, salt, grain, hemp and fish in this town. salt, timber, hemp and grain is used as raw materials for the finished goods beer and fish (also meat and leather). GDANSK produce meat and leather in this town. (transport salt from stettin). VISBY produce wool and cloth in this town. STOCKHOLM produce pig iron, iron goods and timber in this town. RIGA produce skins in this town (transport iron goods from stockholm). for now, I haven't produced anything in reval (even though skins is good there). But I add it to the trade route for sell / buy goods. why I use stettin as hometown? Beer is one of the most basic and most important needs of a town in this game, especially for poor people. Since this town is self sufficient with beer (town itself produces it), then I have a happy hometown and the Lord Mayor position is easier to reach :) and I produce a lot in this town. PIRACY When you can afford it, arm your ships with weapons and sailors, and pirates wont attack you. If you have more cannons, it's more likely that you sink the pirate then he sinks your ship. If you have more sailors then the pirate, he will not try to plunder you or take over your ship. Give cutlasses (handweapon for sailors) to your crew, it increases their fighting ability (good when boaring and plundering). a short respons which ended up in a short guide. oh well! enjoy and good luck!
Great strategies, thanks! Yeah, granting loans early on can cripple your cash flow fo ra long time, it was mostly to show gameplay. I love how inter-related and complex the game can be. Thanks for watching!
I just started a new game with this strategy and I earn about 200-300 000 gc a month. The link below shows my best month :) prntscr.com/5nao1t a neat trick: if you have are a member of the town guild you can auction the buildings of the competitors. how? when you click on a building of your own the auction button is yellow. Now, double-click a competitors building and the auction button will remain yellow. Set up an auction and buy buildings from your competitors :)
I really enjoy this game and am saddened that it is not more popular in America. This is a "high brow" game that requires a lot of thought, which is probably why its less popular in America. :-) I have looked everywhere on the internet for "guide's, walkthroughs, forums" and such, but have found very limited info and the high quality info is in other languages. I know you're a busy man, but if you have the time and inclination, I think there are people who would appreciate videos from you detailing how to perform certain functions in the game, i.e. Pirate Hunting, Profitable Auto Trading, Understanding the financial information the game provides, how to expand beyond being a councillor in one town without having taxes and wages eat you alive, hotkeys if there are any, waging sea battles without having large convoys crash into each other etc. These would ideally be very quick videos, 10 minutes max, wherein you demonstrate how to perform some action or explain some ingame information and the implications of that information and how to use it to your advantage. I'm subbing in case you make some of these videos. Thank you so much for your review of this amazing game and have a great day.
