up until about 1960, this was truly a market. I remember bringing truckloads of vegetables (radishes, onions, cabbage, etc) down before 5 am. They would be delivered to a middleman who would unload them, and he'd sell them on to the restaurants and grocery stores.
Yep. it was a vegetable wholesale market. I saw a photo of my grandfather there in the 1920's standing on the corner in front of, I think it was Vitalli's store. The area was derelict for quite a spell until the 1970's when the Mercer family had the vision to make it into what it is today. Old man Mercer was the most casually elegant and worldly person I ever met. He was a lawyer and lived in Paris. His old family residence was a mansion on 40th & Cumming. The family had deep connections to Omaha and England.
