Today is Sunday and there's nothing better than to have supper ready and a good old black and white movie ..May God continue to bless us and our families and friends. Amen 🙏 🙏 🙏.
TY for an excellent spy murder mystery. Film has the feel of an early Sherlock Holmes plot...lots of twists & turns like, "The Voice of Terror". A lot of dark scenes, guess film is deteriorated, but still worth a watch👍
A British actor, David Farrar (1908 - 1995) appeared as fictional detective Sexton Blake in two films - this one and Meet Sexton Blake (1945). He worked as a journalist before joining a repertory company in 1932 before his first film, Return of a Stranger (1937). This movie was made before Farrar had his big breakthrough role as a British agent in Black Narcissus in 1947 opposite Deborah Kerr (1921 - 2007) and Kathleen Byron (1921 - 2009). Even before this notable film, he was hugely popular receiving hundreds of fan letters a week largely due to his Sexton Blake roles. He continued to work throughout the 1950s although increasingly in secondary roles. His last role was in The 300 Spartans in 1952 after which he walked away from the movie industry - with increasing age he was no longer a leading man/romantic lead but was playing fathers and uncles.
In the very beginning Sexton Blake lights up a, pipe. Immediately my first thoughts was Sherlock Holmes..... Then continuing, Watching the movie the action in tensed !! Now at the end I enjoyed it tremendously !!! You must take the time to watch this movie. You will feel, as I do now. !!!
I've had a tough and insane day! Starting to see this movie brought on more historic feelings. It made me think of too much what is going on in our present administration. I had to hit the back button.
@@DavidRice111 The guys who were trying to "stop the steal" were actually trying to steal this country for Putin and his oligarch cronies.... and some of them were in the previous administration.
I was unfamiliar with Sexton Blake, but I gather he was popular in the UK for a period. Lots of twists and turns - had me going up until the end. And David Farrar is a real he-man detective, much more so than a Sam Spade (nothing against Spade, however).
Sexton Blake~ a poor man's Sherlock Holmes. @ 20:42, he stupidly destroys potential evidence before he can realize it's value. Sherlock would'a waited till he was sure it wasn't needed.
4:29 LOL!! I hope the foppish English gent does some more slapping in this movie!! 29:02 Not a slap, but the world's most timid punch! 31:40 The sound effect for that punch sounds like a slap on a baby's bottom. 1:11:47 Years later, Mel Brooks would pay homage in the final scene of "Blazing Saddles"

The Echo Murders, released UK 17 December 1945, USA 5 May 1952 (TV premiere). David ; Farrar as Sexton Blake; Dennis Price as Dick Warren; Pamela Stirling as Stella Duncan; Julien Mitchell (as Julian Mitchell) as James Duncan; Cyril Smith as Constable Morgan; Dennis Arundell (as Dennis Arundel) as Rainsford; Ferdy Mayne (as Ferdi Mayne) as Dacier; Johnnie Schofield as Purvis; Paul Croft as Marat; Kynaston Reeves as Beales; Desmond Roberts as Cotter; Danny Green as Carl; Patric Curwen as Dr. Grey; Tony Arpino (as Toni Arpino) as Fox; Vincent Holman as Col. Wills; Howard Douglas as Preston; Billy Howard as Sgt. Crossby; Anders; Timberg as Wrexham; H Victor Weske as Otto; Gerald Pring as Sir Horace Cranston; Noel Dainton as Van Schuster; Charles Hersee, Landlord; Olive Walter, Housekeeper
I've read that the term "film noir" referred to low-keyed lighting, left intentionally dark to build a sense of forboding and keep the audience on edge. Also heard the term in reference to dark subject matter... crime, murder, mystery. The deep shadows often covered a multitude of sins like low budget sets and bad stunt fights.
Marvellous ripping yarn! Only David Farrar was able to do something like this without it slipping into self parody. Actually he was a much more subtle actor than he seemed, for example in Black Narcissus. Sadly the Swinging Sixties made a laughing stock of his type of stiff-upper-lip hero. A few questions: why were there extended sequences in the dark towards the end? Why was it called The Echo Murders? Why release this at the end of the war, making the whole basis of the film (a Nazi fifth column base) obsolete?
At 59:15 "Excuse me, gentlemen. Blackout." Due to night time bombing raids by the Germans, the English had mandatory blackouts at night. You didn't want the German bombers to see the lights of your house and drop their bombs on your town. No streetlights or porchlights, and heavy, black curtains needed to completely cover windows to keep light from getting out. I guess they were trying to show that in the subsequent dark scenes.
😂...at 38:00 is when what seemed like a potentially enjoyable B-grade film breaks-down; LoL---Sexton Blake--master Safe Cracker as a Champion Crime Fighter---or a forerunner of a James Bond character. It's a down ski run from then on. Pity. And how many times, just did everybody go:.."Sexton Blake..the famous Detective? WOW....' amusing....
They needed their damn rifles and grenades at the end. Whoever would say rifles are useless in hand to hand combat? Sorry. A blight on a fine film to appeal to English sentiment.Only someone who never used one that way!
Father was German he would have laughed at this Film and make a comment with him being in the German army at the time........which unfortunately I cannot write here but agree with
It's only a story, but it's a story about stupid folk, stupid most of all be cause they won't talk truth to each other even when they could, even when they should, even when the one they should have trusted is a loved one, and only THEN they run into trouble be cause with withholding facts and creating secrets they create a weak spot making them vulnerable to vultures, such as blackmailers. Even the tone of the voices as the actors portray these roles I cannot stand.
Your comment led me down the internet rabbit hole looking for information about those 'knickers', which are called 'plus fours' because they are 4 inches longer than traditional knickers pants. 'Plus fours' are sporting wear worn for outdoor activities such as hiking, shooting & golfing. They may seem laughable, but they had a practical purpose. One didn't have to deal with stuffing long-legged pants into wellington or hiking boots & they saved wear & tear on long-legged pants out in the field, when combined with heavy-duty woolen socks. What was old-fashioned is new again, & 'plus fours' are making a comeback amongst golfers, albeit in gaudy, bright colors. Fashion is a strange, fascinating phenomenon.
awful film, one minute he was getting beat up and then a blackout and after 10 minutes he reappeared a free man with no explanation. poor script and bad direction

Negative commentary is used to computer designed characters and scenery , fast chases, little plots. These movies have style. Thanks for posting.

For all the fault-finders, this was made during WWII. Movies were cranked out to boost morale.
Very true, the cowards needed a job too.
This was made very near the war's end, and released in 1945, after the war was over.

Wow! What actors list !!!
There was nothing scripted about the Britain's victory against the Hun in 1945. Based on this, I can only thank heavens.
David Farrars voice is very similar to Basil Rathborne (Sherlock Holmes between 1939-1946 for Universal)

Because of the sound of the voice in the cave.

A fifth columnist was wartime expression for German agent,or a pro-nazi English person who gave information to the enemy.
