I found this about “Flower”, the actual name of the song, passing it along as I hope it helps. Do not know who to credit for the original post though… the lyrics used in "Flower" are sampled from an old African American children's song called "Green Sally Up," which shares similarities with the British children's song, "Ring Around The Rosie." The actual lyrics being sung in the "Flower" sample are "Green Sally up, Green Sally down. Last one squat gotta tear the ground." It is correct to assume that this song is rooted historically in the slave culture of the American South, but it was more a song to entertain and occupy the children out in the fields than it was a commentary on slavery. Like "Ring Around The Rosie," "Green Sally Up" has an accompanying game that's played in time and accordance with the lyrics. 'Green Sally' means 'little girl,' hence the first two lines direct the children to rise up and then squat down in rhythm with the song. "Last one squat gotta tear the ground" means, quite plainly, that the last child to squat has to help the adults with the cotton picking. It's assumed that this was not a literal rule of the game, but a threat of the "last one home is a rotten egg" variety. The lines, "Old Miss Lucy's dead and gone, left me here to weep and moan" is indeed a reference to the death of a slave 'owner', and in the original song is followed by the lines, "If you hate it, fold your arms; if you love it, clap your hands," which was a signal for those listening to indicate their feelings towards their 'master' by either joining in the rhythmic clapping that accompanies the song, or by refraining from doing so, which would indicate a measure of love/respect/complacency that the individual may have had for the 'owner'.

RSS PUBLISHED TO Otteray Scribe MOT - Morning Open Thread TAGS flower Slavery MOT MorningOpenThread Moby greensallyup bringsallyup childrenssong 1000kproject Share this article Welcome to Blues Wednesday on Morning Open Thread. Today, we have a mashup of a centuries old children's song. Not just any children’s song, but one by and for slave children in the old South. The meaning is obscure to most people. The original lyrics varied, because songs by and for children are not static. This is an approximation of the original: Sometimes it was “Bring Sally Up” and sometimes “Green Sally.” It went on to the next line, “Last one squat gotta tear the ground." That was accompanied by dance like antics, where “Sally" referred to the little girls. They jumped and then squatted in rhythm to the song. Tearing the ground meant the last one to squat had to scrabble in the dirt with their hands. The line, "Last one squat gotta tear the ground", is similar to the more modern phrase, "Last one to do it is a rotten egg," sort of teasing. The implication being that the last one to squat had to help the adults in the field, although it was a playground tease and not a serious threat. The song goes on, "Old miss Lucy's dead and gone, left me here to weep alone." That verse meant the slave owner (or his wife), is dead. In the original song that verse is followed with the call, "If you hate it fold your arms, if you love it clap your hands." Obviously the kids who clapped along to the rhythmic beat of the song were glad that Old Miss Lucy has died, and the ones who didn't were showing a measure of respect for her. During slavery days in the old south, white and black children were not allowed to play together. Kids being kids, they were innovative. From different places in the yard or field, but within eyesight or earshot, both groups of children would sing and play together using Sally as the code name for all to play. Black and White were able to play the same games without being in a mixed group.
After about 2 weeks of attempting this right before I go to sleep I managed to make it the whole way, I started off barley doing 40 seconds of the song now I'm finished with it, time to do diamond push ups now
watching this without doing it makes it seem like it goes by so fast, when in reality anytime coach brought out the speakers i knew it was gonna be the longest 3 minutes ever
I'm an experienced gymnast and in our gymnasium coaches use this as a punishment. Now it depends how big your mistake was, for minor ones it's just normal push ups meanwhile if you reach the limit, it could range from planche push ups to handstand push ups on rings, and if you do not do the right amount of them throughout a certain duration, you're going to repeat it, real hell. But again this only applies to elite gymnasts here

I remember having to do pushups during physical training with the Marines because I was trying to build muscle so I could meet weight requirements but that didn't work out too well.
Ab workout: Plank and every time it says sally up or down, you do a side twist to left and right. When it says lift and squat you bring the opposite leg to each arm, one for lift one for squat. Parts that don't have either, you just hold the plank. Good luck!!
Raj Ramsook the meaning of Green Sally means little girl, hence the first two lines direct the children to rise up and then squat down with the rhythm of the song. When she says, "Last one squat gotta tear the ground" what that means is the last child to squat has to help the adults with the cotton picking.
Our little workout group does alternating exercises. Push-ups for first and third verses, squats for second and fourth. There’s no “pausing,” there’s just holding. And, we’re all women and we do real push-ups, not from knees. It took me two months to get where I could hold it on the down part and I’m really proud of myself. Next I try for push-ups on all four verses!

Welcome to Blues Wednesday on Morning Open Thread. Today, we have a mashup of a centuries old children's song. Not just any children’s song, but one by and for slave children in the old South. The meaning is obscure to most people. The original lyrics varied, because songs by and for children are not static. This is an approximation of the original:
Sometimes it was “Bring Sally Up” and sometimes “Green Sally.” It went on to the next line, “Last one squat gotta tear the ground." That was accompanied by dance like antics, where “Sally" referred to the little girls.
Shut up we're trying to workout to this
It's not about death or being buried it's about challenge.
egergarg ergergerae lmao yes
@@wadepenley7220 the lyrics on here arent the real song it's actually about death
After about 2 weeks of attempting this right before I go to sleep I managed to make it the whole way, I started off barley doing 40 seconds of the song now I'm finished with it, time to do diamond push ups now
I'm scared to know wtf a diamond push up is
Deh Panda King you put your hands in a triangle shape then do push-ups like that it is a lot hard
Try leg lifts

My pe coach made us do the while song in class today 👎

@@hiv3squad394 me ;-;
NoPaiiin_ I have to do it to it is hell
I found this song bc some of the wrestlers were acting a fool and we had to do this with pushups, if our knees hit the ground we had to restart.
@@quinnporter289 rip you
this song got me crying in dance work out days 😭
My football couch did this to us Tuesday... He said if one of us quits EVERYONE starts over. #faceplantintofloor

Brutal
TheRetroX I wish I had a football couch
TheRetroX ah fuck thats what happened to us in the boot camp fuck
TheRetroX same
I just did this in P.E it hurt to stand up for an hour.lol
watching this without doing it makes it seem like it goes by so fast, when in reality anytime coach brought out the speakers i knew it was gonna be the longest 3 minutes ever
Any athlete imaginable: "I need a song that i can make a workout out of."
Sally: "So you have chosen death."
But again this only applies to elite gymnasts here
This song: exists
Every coach in existence: haha yes maximum pain
Sally: ⬆️⬇️⬆️⬇️⬆️⬇️⬆️⬇️⬆️⬇️⬆️⬇️⬆️⬇️
Old Miss Lucy: dead
Why on earth does this comment have 1.2k likes, it isn’t even remotely funny
HOW ARE YALL FINDING THIS COMMENT WHAT

And gone
Starry Skiis ?...
I bet Lucy died from doing all these squats
I JUST FINISHED WORKOUTS WITH THIS
I don't know what is about this song but I find it damn near impossible to NOT bob my head and groove along to this one!
Did this in football, my t h i g h s were g o n e
I do this at school in cardio and agree with you there, it's murder on the thighs
You do not play football
@@RedLit71 how are you so sure? You don't even know the person
it’s actually not that bad, but that might be bc I’m a swimmer :V
Yeah, we did sit ups, (30) and then (30) push ups, and then (30) squats
This song is the first time I’ve been praying for an ad break
My sergeant had a ad break happen to him at the end of the song. So we just held the squat til the end of the ad...
Couldn't think of anything else to write for this song just keep repeating it over and over and over ! But love it
The drill seargent would make us do this with pushups and hold it with our elbows bent on the down part.
#saveourchildren
I do this daily, my record is 1:37. i made a vid of me doing it and i think i lasted like 1:30 or something like that
Update, I can do it for 2mins flat now
we do planks
@@LandenGamezzCan you do the whole thing now?
this is catchy
Matt Law my friend said the same thing
This mix might be as old as you.
It is also painful to do
You will memorize this song in basics
It is really catchy I went to a hockey camp about a month ago and I am still singing it in my head
My wrestling team does this for a finisher during our lifts a few days every week. Sometimes with curls, or maybe even shrugs with weights. Sucks alot lol, then 100 pushups after
This gives me anxiety from all the PT sessions haha
Complete the song doing 90 degree squats.
Next challenge: High to low planks
Stopped at 2:32
Who's Gone? Any progress? How’s it going?
He died trying
complete the song doing 90° pushups

@@savagerobuxanddiamondplayz3927 I got to 1:35
We did squats to this at my cheer practice definitely a great laugh for the coaches
Never had a love hate relationship with a song in my life until I met this song. Thanks Army
"Green Sally up,
Green Sally down,
Last one squat gotta tear the ground."
It's "Bring Sally up" not "green Sally up"
Ron Swanson that’s what I hear I don’t know what these pathetic excuses for lyrics are

I remember having to do pushups during physical training with the Marines because I was trying to build muscle so I could meet weight requirements but that didn't work out too well.
I'm in the army national guard and our drill sergeant did this too us at our last drill with squats
PENS68 we do this in martial arts and all of us completed it!!😀😀
We have to do this at school for gym lol
Ab workout: Plank and every time it says sally up or down, you do a side twist to left and right. When it says lift and squat you bring the opposite leg to each arm, one for lift one for squat. Parts that don't have either, you just hold the plank. Good luck!!
It’s Green Sally up and Green Sally down!
Explain how that makes sense.
Raj Ramsook the meaning of Green Sally means little girl, hence the first two lines direct the children to rise up and then squat down with the rhythm of the song. When she says, "Last one squat gotta tear the ground" what that means is the last child to squat has to help the adults with the cotton picking.
@@Audioandlyrics oh okay cool
I was scrolling through the comments hoping someone new its actually "green Sally up"
@@Audioandlyrics I thought it was about burying someone
Our little workout group does alternating exercises. Push-ups for first and third verses, squats for second and fourth. There’s no “pausing,” there’s just holding.
And, we’re all women and we do real push-ups, not from knees. It took me two months to get where I could hold it on the down part and I’m really proud of myself.
Next I try for push-ups on all four verses!
I got to 1:58. I'm gonna do this every Thursday until I can complete the full song w/o stopping
same havnt done push ups and years and got just around yours, this is doable.
Its been 2 years hows that progress coming lol
have you conquered sally?
