I grow bananas in my Florida zone 9b garden. I have two ice cream banana clumps one from a plant I bought three years ago and one from a pup I severed and replanted. I have had two stalks of bananas from the original clump so far and they are delicious both fresh and dried. They ripen so fast that I bought a dehydrator to preserve the 90 % of them my wife and I can't eat right away. According to most banana websites you should have at most the mother plant and one pup growing for next year. I am doing that with most of my banana clumps but I let my original ice cream plant go for two years until it developed about fifteen large p stems. I had to cut most of them out so it would keep fruiting and that is a lot of work. I would attest that the best way to get lots of bananas is to keep it to one main stem and one pup for next year. If you want more than one cluster a year separate a pup and plant it elsewhere.
I planted a Dwarf Brazilian in Jan 2019. Grew to about 7 feet, and produced 3 new Pseudostems last year (I transplanted the smallest to a new location this Jan.). It's producing 6 more stems this year, and it flowered a couple weeks ago. I'm up to about 7 bunches of bananas on it so far with 6-8 bananas per bunch.
How soon before you gor pups from it? How soon before you got fruit? Mine is old, but i was traveling as a crisis responder during the pandemic, so it really didnt start growing until this year even tho the roots are older. Im wondering how soon I will get pups from mine.
@@baziowenz8231 Mine produced it first stems in the first year, and fruited on the second I believe. They like lots of nutrients and water, so make sure it's getting plenty of both. The one I transplanted produced new stems on the second year, and produced a flower at the start of the third. I think it spent it's entire first year just establishing a new root system since it came off the mother plant with very little corm.
My son just brought me a pup of an Ice Cream banana here in north Florida. I have several different varieties of banana and most of them make fruit every year.
Imma be honest I grew my ice cream bananas in the sun(very important) and they grew sooo fast faster than my passion fruit so don’t waste your money on like $40 2ft ice cream banana trees they grow so fast and you get like five in one year
Hello! My ice cream banana tree arrived today and I couldn't be happier! I will plant it Monday as today is Saturday. It's 100 degrees here now. Thanks for the hard work you put into educating us. I promise we're paying attention!😂
I have a blue Java it can produce a lot of pups. When the pups get 6-8” I remove and transplant. Since bananas are unpredictable as to when they flower having many plots ensures a more even harvest. When the flower begins to pop out the top is when I stop cutting off the pups for the next generation of bananas from the clump my procedure and it seems to work
I'm late to seeing this video, but thanks for posting. I've got an ice cream banana in a pot in north GA. Got it in the spring and will probably winter it in the garage and then put it in the ground next spring. Hoping it fruits early in the year so we don't have frost before I can harvest.
@@TheBusyGardenerThank you. I've cut the "tree" back for the winter after it grew for 8-9 months in its pot. Any thoughts or recommendations for when I take it back out in the spring aside from normal care (fertilizer, water, sun, etc)?
I'm in Northeast Texas zone 8a I've banana plants and have abt 11 varieties. I like to dig up the pups 2ft and taller to keep mama plant strong. Great video by the way Peace N Love
You have to split the Pups from the mother plant. You can share them with your friends. When you cut down a rack of bananas hang them from a strange upside down in your garage and lay something underneath just in case any juices flow off . The juice off the banana stock actually stained my lanai.
Yeah, I went through and split most of the pups off, which was quite a chore when they got bigger. It's amazing how many ways there are to propagate banana plants!
So over a year in... Haven't had a harvest? Everything I've read says if you don't let the pups or shoots grow the plant will fruit in 9mo. I've not grown this so you would know more than I do on that. Thoughts?
@@TheBusyGardener that is soo cool. I have no real way of getting to even try one of them. I'll just have to grow I guess. Lol. I'm in VA so I don't have any real way of being able to even try one. I could try to find someone to send it to me lol. It would still be cool in my yard. I already have a 15 foot bamboo privacy "fence" on the back side of my property. Lol
@@TheBusyGardener The dead material isn't added to the base of the plant for mulch. It's extremely high in potassium and phosphorous, for fruit and root development.
I'm not sure! Mine turned out to be a Namwah, which has turned out ok because Namwah is reportedly better than true Ice Cream (Blue Java). You might search online for cultures of verified Ice Cream
I'm looking forward to an eventual harvest! Have you planted and harvest any type of banana? If you're interested, here is a link to the well made Ontario Knives Machete I use amzn.to/2Z1ObxG . Has anyone here actually TASTED an Ice Cream banana, and if so, does it live up to the name?
In the high desert, CA... I've been thinking about planting one of these out. I've been mocked at the mere thought of growing "bananas"...any suggestions?
I'm new to planting bananas, but they've responded well for us. I think the biggest issue you'll face is the low temps. If you want to intervene on evenings where you have really cold temps with some sort of incandescent light or other means of stabilizing temps, it may work for you. I think the lack of moisture in the air contributes to temperature extremes, which will make it challenging (but I don't think impossible) for you to plant banana in the high desert.
I just bought a Ice Cream banana plant online. It's my first one and I was wondering since I live in Zone 8 in West Texas. Would it be okay to grow in ground?
It's possible, but you're gonna likely need to take some actions to keep it from freezing. Wrap it with frost cloth, and string incandescent Christmas lights in it. Where you plant it in your yard makes a difference too. Try to plant by things that are a thermal mass, like a water tank, or cement wall which absorb heat during the day and provide a little warmth as it bleeds off
@@TheBusyGardener well in my area, our winter either happens or not. It hardly gets below 25 F. My backyard fence is made of those big-grey brick. But if I decide to grow in a big pot, will it still produce pups?
You can have it in a big container, and it should produce pups. I'm always reluctant to plant most trees in a container, because it's a much more sensitive system.
I'm not sure if you're asking about the weight of the tree or the fruit. This first bunch of bananas is really small, so maybe 8-10 pounds of fruit? Not exactly sure.
Hey buddy, this was the morning pick me up I needed since I'm currently in quarantine for Covid exposure. Did the juice stain anything purple? When I grew one everything the juice was on stained purple. Great video buddy!
I'm glad to give a bit of light, Tommy! Thankfully the juice didn't touch anything, but I had no idea about the staining. I'll pay close attention to that so my clothes don't get tie-dyed by banana. Happy birthday, too!
I appreciate update videos because I like to see if the methods taught actually work. I have never tasted an Ice Cream banana at least I don't think I have and I don't think I could grow this in zone 9A (Las Vegas) because it's too dry and hot here. (BTW, laughing at the Choco Tacos story lol.)
"Chaco tacos for life!" lol! You'd have a bit of an uphill battle with growing bananas in a true desert like Vegas, but it's possible. You'd need to baby the plant a bit to make it work because of your specific climate though. Thanks for watching!
Why did you do that!!!!! It has not even produced yet!! it takes about two years to produce and then chop out the stock it was on. Unless some how i misunderstood your video.

That's cool to hear the ways people around the world call them!
You should try the dwarf varieties they flower at a lower height like 5ft I'm growing bananas in a much colder climate.

Edible bananas don't produce seeds instead they grow from pups off the mother so you would have to get a banana pup.
