  • Pompeii has such a wealth of rooms under excavation that it can allow itself to release news a little at a time depending on the calendar. In a time of lunches and dinners for the Holidays, here it is, magically, revealing beautiful frescoes on the theme of a rich banquet, still lifes of a “reception” setting, in a luxurious setting of Regio IX, the one under excavation in recent years to arrange the front of the site from a hydro-geological point of view. Insula 10 shows a large frescoed domus, with an oecus - that is, a hall - marked by columns with painted plaster of great refinement.
In the upper register of the wall, behind the trompe-l'oeil colonnade mentioned by the director, the triumph of game hanging on the wall that then frames the catch, which refers to the nearby Pompeii port
Archaeologists have identified chickens, ducks, partridges, a wild boar accompanying rush baskets filled with blue fish, squid and molluscs in shells, painted on a background of red walls. It seems intuitive that the environment was also intended for banquets
In the meantime, the following are open to visitors again - the Archaeological Park informs, after maintenance and safety measures -
: the alley of the Baker, the alley of the Skeletons, the alley of the Hanging Balcony, the alley of Eumachia in regio VII, and the alley of the Faun, those of Modesto and Fullonica in regio IV, the alley of Championnet in regio VIII which, through a temporary walkway, allows a view of the excavation areas within the construction site for the safety of the insula Meridionalis.
The Thermopolium of Regio V is also reopening following recent safety measures and excavation. The ancient diner of the time, which stands out from the many present in Pompeii, for the exceptional decoration of the painted counter, with images of the Nereid riding a hippocampus and animals probably prepared and sold right there.
