The Grumman F9F Panther was the manufacturer's first jet fighter and one of the United States Navy's first successful carrier-based jet fighters. A single-engined, straight-winged day fighter, it was fitted with an armament of four 20 mm (0.79 in) cannons and could carry a wide assortment of air-to-ground munitions.
The Panther was used extensively by the U.S. Navy and the United States Marine Corps in the Korean War. It was also the first jet aircraft used by the Blue Angels flight team, being used by them from 1949 through to late 1954. The aircraft was exported to Argentina and was the first jet used by the Argentine Naval Aviation.
Total F9F production was 1,382. The design evolved into the swept wing Grumman F-9 Cougar.

Corsair 205 at the 1.30 mark is the same one flown by Thomas Hudner during his attempted rescue of the US Navy's first black aviator, Jesse L. Brown. They were members of Fighting 32 and flew off Leyte in the winter of 1950. Read the spellbinding book by Adam Makos titled "Devotion".
Adam Makos has several excellent books in addition to Devotion. My father was in VF32 at that time and thought very highly of Ens. Brown. They called my father "Dad" in the book, at the ripe old age of 26, lol. But he was a veteran of WW II, having served in VF15 on board Essex.
That's awesome to know! My Grandfather was on this ship during this time and during the Korean War. It's really cool to know he is somewhere on this ship as this video was being recorded even.

The LSO looked like he was getting frustrated with a couple of those pilots in the beginning landing sequences. There were probably always pilots who felt they didn't need a guy on the deck telling them how to land their airplane.
My Grandpa served on this boat during this time, he was also on it during the Korean war. Really cool to know he is somewhere on this boat while this is being filmed.

The carrier seen here is Essex class Leyte. I loved the older jets they were handled like the prop acft with taking off with the canopy open(in case you ditch on launch). And landed with the guidance of the LSO. A definite difference to today's way. I have a original two piece flight helmet. It the soft cap that. Carries your earphones and the oxygen mask, then you have the hardhat that the flight goggles attach to. Extremely comfortable to wear. A great film showing the operations on deck.
My father served on a heavy cruiser, engaging in hostilities during the Korean War. He passed away a few years ago at 93. I look at this a realize most if not all in this film have left us.
My late brother was an AB on the Randolph CV-15 Went on board just after her re-fit with angled flight deck, early 1950's. Med cruise with, F9, AD's and Corsair's followed. Narragansett Bay

This isn't HD quality but it is in color and very good considering the era this documentary was made. It's great to see all the operations going on on a carrier deck. For instance, I didn't know the wing tip tanks of the Panthers were filled up that way !

damn were corsair landings and takeoffs dangerous... hell! even just taxiing the thing across the deck was lethal! you couldn't see infront of you and there was a wide angle of no vision below to the sides in-front of you. they tried to fix it by giving them bubble cockpits and raising the pilots dear, but the engine was so huge the pilot was so far behind the nose you still couldn't see in-front, the British fixed the problem slightly by designing a curved carrier landing approach. so you should see what you were *about* land on... she also tended to bounce due to her huge landing gear and suspension. the latter models had so much torque they sometimes flipped when bouncing. to fix this they glued a small prism of wood to the starboard wing... it actual worked for how small it was. Either way... bloody terrifying to land one, and terrifying to taxi because all you have is people to your sides giving signals...
Garreth Kelly to be completely honest, the Corsair WAS called the ensign elimator for a reason, however, if you have the delicate touch required to actually throttle it, it wasn't such a major issue, thing about the corsair that really made it stand out with these issues was that its fuckhuge prop meant that it had to have a somewhat high angle on its suspension and because of the amount of lift the wings generated, it could lift when the front wheels levered the nose up on touch down if you went too fast, a problem inherent to taildraggers, but especially pronounced in the corsair's need to generate a lot of lift to hold it in the air.

In the soundtrack playing in my head as I watch this, I hear the theme from the Baa Baa Black Sheep TV show as the Corsairs land. I know that series was not based on the historical facts about VMF-214 but I'd love to see a reboot of the series that is based on the historical record and that shows off a plethora of F4U Corsairs. How about it Hollywood?

Your actually wrong! The show was based on the black sheep!! Although in modification! You'll never see a reboot like what was done in the 70's ever again! All the Corsairs flying today are too expensive to do the simulated combat like back in the day. Alot of real footage was used in the show as well.

there are quite a few corsair and panther clips. less than a 1/3rd are skyraiders

The decks were painted dark blue too match the ocean color from above. No camo was used from water lines up as no threat of subs like in the south Pacific .

What are the terms you use in the description, "MS", "MLS", "MCU"? I assume "M" is for "Marine", and I'd guess they are ranks, but I can't figure out the rest. I don't even find anything on Google. I find plenty of references to "MLS So-and-so", etc, but nothing that gives any hints as to what the term means. I even found a big list of hundreds of military acronyms beginning with "M", and the definitions they gave were obviously not what we're talking about here...."Multi-Level Security", "Microwave Communication Unit", etc.
I served 30 years in Naval Aviation and also all of Korean war on USS Princeton And I have no idea what his Abbreviations mean. I fueled this same planes and also was Flight Deck AB , That Carrier did not have Marine aircraft Or Flight crew, The Marines on Carriers operated on CVL carries on different Location from Maine Task Force. As for the Blues flying the Panthers, is correct the whole team was activated to USS Princeton ( My Ship ) at beginning of Korean war, and established with VF191 , The only Blues Killed in Action was Lcdr John Magda, He was shot down on that first tour. This information comes from me as I was there and am still breathing. lol, As for the Corsair , It was a Pain in the ass for Pilts to see out of and taxi and land and take off as well it was a bitch for us Deck AB to direct, The Plane wasn't going to be accepted by Navy at first but extra training gave Pilo9ts the know how . The Corsair that Black sheep squadron had was there blade Prop and most were GF1 made by Good Year, We did have a few yet in Korean war, As for Cranking that Bird up, It was not as easy as other Prop Engines it took some TLC and Magic Touch. I had a stack Fire first time,Lol

what's thelittle flag thing they put in the front of the tip tank?
+zekezero12345 That's what I wanted to know. The "flag thingy" is probably a "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT" flag, which they attach to various locks and plugs they put on control surfaces and in instrument ports (like the pitot tube) to protect them from damage or disturbance. I don't know what the hole is for though; I would guess that it's a static port for measuring air pressure, unless it's some sort of vent for the fuel tank. If you had air being forced in by ram air effect, it would pressurize the tank, and make it easier to pump the fuel out. Just a guess though; I have no idea if they have ever even tried to do something like that, or if it would even work if they did.
+justforever96 it's the tank air intake. one way air valve. it's to stop anything unwanted getting in the tank while it's stowed on deck or in the hanger

Not sure what's funny about that, but ... whatever. The Skyraider is an awesome airplane, and could still be performing real-world missions today (for a lot cheaper) if they were still being produced.

Panther hands down Corsair is a very ugly plane susceptible to ground to air artillery fire. In another case even thou the mac-speed engine wasn't invented it appears the takeoffs & landings are smooth not that they 1 or 2 have shot down it is after the jet, are
faster & more sexier than a prop plane.
