I think there is a lot to be said about the mindset you have going into a crowdfunding campaign. Resilience, the willingness and ability to adapt, and an unwavering belief in the success of he project are super important. Half way through our campaign we had only raised about 6,000 out of 45,000. We decided to create a new video with some major changes and redoubled our campaigning efforts reaching out to schools to do presentations and radio shows that might get us some publicity. Its possible to come back!

Hello brother,I just watched DR videos, I was your film making experience? Searching for a producer for animation film. Did you tried crowd funding?
I just checked out the _Unsound_ campaign page, one way or another I have been in international business and marketing for about 14-years and, just some friendly feedback, what jumped out at me is the order of the content being displayed isn't quite right - the content is very good overall but it isn't in the most effective order *in my opinion*
I completely agree that it's who you know that makes the biggest difference, just look at the success that Griffin Hammond had with his Sriracha documentary Kickstarter campaign, he was able to promote it to a base of over 500,000 people via Indy Mogul plus his contacts via Film Fights and other outlets he has built up over the years, but, how you display your content will impact the perception of the individual.
Regardless it's a great effort and deserved more!

Thanks for all your videos. Many of them are fantastic. That being said (and the following is just my opinion)...
There are multiple problems with that kickstarter campaign. The biggest one and I can't stress this enough, is the thumbnail you get before pressing play. You put a lot of effort into getting the word out and your page was thorough but that thumbnail stands in as your movie poster and easily the single most important element on a kickstarter site. Also, the video was too long. The magic length is 60-90 seconds. The beginning is not strong enough to hook me in and you're overusing fade to blacks IMO. When I first played it I wasn't sure if the beginning of the video was part of the movie trailer. Also, it's always a necessity to look extremely excited/passionate about your project because if you don't, it will be contagious to the potential backers. You sort of look like you just woke up, to be honest when you give the pitch in the second half, no offense. I think it can also help you to name the rewards inside the description. It can't hurt to remind people in case they don't read the right column.
That being said... Love your videos. Can't wait for a new movie breakdown. Sorry if I come off as offensive but these points I mentioned is something I have been obsessed about when making promo videos.

See the tough thing about crowd funding is its hard to raise alot of money when you dont have a big fan base. For example Freddiew when he did his Kickstarters he already had tons of subbscribers to back his project up so he made his money fast. Same with other popular or famous people. Thats the tough thing about it. If you dont have a large fan base its pretty hard to get to your goal if its a high one, even 15k. From seeing past Kickstarters while browsing I saw ones that looked awesome and others that failed to interest me. ( theses are from non popular people who dont have a huge fan base). Even tho i didnt donate to any of them. If I was gonna I would to the people who impressed me and had a project with stuff that interests me. So thats the hard thing when ur not popular, is advertising ur Kickstarter and interesting people enough to wanna back your project.
All very true. The more fans you have the more support you can acquire. of Freddiew's millions of subscribers only about 10,000 donated to his campaign (90-9-1 rule in full effect lol). It ends up being a numbers game because there are some really great campaigns out there that still fail to meet their funding goal because they didn't have enough followers or fans to begin with. I've also attempted to do crowdfunding campaigns and most important factor is the marketing. If you have no solid marketing, you have nothing.

So true!! The marketing is the toughest part really. Even great ideas die without some type of strong marketing angle. It's unfortunate really but hey, that's life LOL.
In the past I have had to raise money for other stuff. Like anything in life money is not very different than film you need to start somewhere. Sometimes you start with what you have who you got. Who is in your team? How much money can come out on your own? Can you make or do something as you campaign to raise money to try to motivate people to give? You have to be creative and go one step at a time people like to support those who are willing to lead the crowd and step out of the box even when it is not popular to start with. People who give money like to see what you are doing on your own and what you have done even if it is small, it is better than looking cool on camera! I am going to take this advice for myself haha.
I'm really sorry, dude. you have a really helpful channel and I'm sure something will work out. maybe you should get an acting or editing job on a film, that way you could get leads which lead to better funding or projects

Great to see such personal tips - one I have always been curious about when it comes to crowdfunding, though, would be exactly how to tackle the perks, especially if you don't exactly have a lot of money to begin with - so while a video based around the math of it all may sound a little dry, a video on figuring out perks and the cost of perks along with the rest for Crowdfunding would be really cool, if ever you find the time.

What were some of the incentives to your kickstarter campaign? I successfully failed at two kickstarter campaigns myself and its definitely more to it that what most people imagine crowd funding is like. The best way to look at it is that it is a tool or platform to be used to raise funds from an already organically grown audience. Things just don't catch fire randomly online like it used. Have you considering running another campaign based on the audience you have seemed to create from your TH-cam channel alone? How long ago did you run the campaign?
Definitely know how you feel. I've got a project up at the moment to raise $5,000 and we haven't raised a dime in two weeks. You're right about having to generate your own interest; I've noticed with both of the projects I've done that Kickstarter does nothing at all to promote project visibility, even things as basic as making sure that projects with 3 days left show up in search results before projects that have 30, or that projects that haven't met their goals show up before projects that have. I've become pretty disillusioned with Kickstarter as a platform, I must say. It's true that there are so just many things going that even worthy projects can't get any attention, but a bigger problem seems to be that when people go on the site intending to spend some money they're naturally drawn toward gadgets and things with prototypes that they can see and get excited about rather than broader, more abstract projects like books and movies. A lot of the site has basically turned into pre-order shopping. Tell me this, what do you think about people with big names and huge fanbases like Joss Whedon and Spike Lee coming in with their new projects? I mean, I like those guys and their work as much as the next guy, more probably, but the major appeal, as a creator, in the early days was that you could put a project up as an unknown and you'd get attention (and maybe, of course, money) based on the project's merits. There's just so much competition of so many kinds within Kickstarter that it seems to have defeated the original purpose of overcoming competition from outside it.
Bah. Anyway, I like your channel a lot. It's good to see someone working hard on what they do, it's clear that you really know your shit, and it's righteous that you're puttin' out all this free advice. Best of luck with your film and everything, hope I get to see it some day soon.
Thanks for commenting Daniel. When crowdfunding platforms like kickstarter first came about there weren't as many projects to fund and it was a really new concept. Many people visited these sites just to see what it was all about and donated just because they enjoyed the novelty of it all.
Now that crowdfunding has been around for awhile and the platforms are over saturated with projects it's tough for any creator who doesn't have a pre-existing fan base to get a following. You almost have to be a brand to get your projects funded now lol.
As far as celebrities joining in on the crowdfunding foray, it was bound to happen. I'm not against it. The little guy will still have just as much trouble getting his project funded via crowdfunding because it comes down to how big of a following he has, not because spike lee is running a campaign.

Great video. When I got married my wife and I shut down all of social media because we thought it would just cause problems with trust. Considering facebook is where we hooked up. So now that my wife has moved everything from our home and has taken off with our 22 month old baby. I need social media to share my story to try and find my baby. Sucks my advise don't get married

I think that you are right about the goal limit, had it been smaller you might ahve made it. But what's done it's done and you did learn about it. Another thing to consider is that kickstarter lets you overachieve the goal, and you'll keep that money. So by setting a smaller goal you might benefit a lot more and you might even hit the number you wanted on the first place.

SERIOUSLY, what does Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, etc., do that I can't do by simply creating a "Donate" page on my own website? From what I've seen these crowdfunding sites do NOTHING to attract funds to your project other than having it listed. You do all the work and then they take their cut.

when I produced and directed my first film, I some how did it with only between 1500 to 2000 bucks to name. Most of it went to location insurance, food (and more food) and props. In the end, I also ended up paying my four main actors 100 bucks each. I ran into the same problem as you with crowdfunding campaign only I wasn't even able to raise a 1000 bucks. Nobody I know has that kind of cash. Not for something that is going to air on DATV (public access with very low viewership because they only broadcast in half of the city). I honestly don't have reason to believe that my next crowd funding campaign would be much better. :/

great information as i've never had a successful kickstarter.
You have do press releases, and run ads. Native ads work fine. If you want to have a successful campaign you need to have atleast a few thoudand dollars for ad spend and pr. I know it seems counter productive to spend money since you're trying to raise it. But crowd funding is a business and if you treat otherwise your results will be dismal.
Been there. My Kickstarter Campaign died a 1000s deaths. Will I try again one day, maybe. Good luck to you.

I learned that when it comes to marketing on social media u should only expect to reach 10% and outta that 10% expect 1-3% to actually partake.
I think until one builds up said media presence Indiegogo is the way to go. I tend to hate to promote myself as such my social media presence is small except maybe with my music and there I didn't promote myself at all. When I start fundraising I'll pay someone who has a decent network to promote me and my project.

Well, this might just be me, but I believe since you don't have as big of a following as someone big youtube names, I think setting a smaller goal would have benefited a little more. Like around $1000 - $2500 at the most. And I think most people also enjoy benefits towards donating as well. Like if you donate a certain amount, some people would like something close to that worth in return. As if you were trading. Maybe if you did another project and did updates on how much you've raised, you may get more people to donate as well. Again it just might be my belief though.

I think we could have definitely pulled off 5,000 but we overestimated our support network by setting a 15k goal. I definitely won't make a mistake like that again. As always thankyou for commenting!

I have a movie script that I am working on, that involves some virtual reality software, being used by characters in the film, so I appreciate your position of aspiring filmmaker. With your education and battle scars, you're big enough to have clout, but small enough to contact, unlike Spielberg or something, ha ha! I've taken your tips to heart, as well as many other similar tips I've found online, and want to say that I admire your ambition. When I had only 500 subscribers me and my friends made a huge plan for this feature film, over estimated how much we would get donated to us on kickstarter, my friend decided that promoting it on my channel alone would get us to our $5000 goal. We miraculously $200, only to find out you don't get any of the money unless you reach the goal. And no one will believe me when I tell them we can make a 30 minute short film with what we've got and no budget.
Hahaha I know exactly how you feel Andrew lol. Now-a-days you have to be able to make something great with little to no money and slowly build your audience/fan base. Once you have that going for you then you can eventually run crowdfund campaigns for projects. When you're unknown it's really hard to pull off a campaign for any significant amount of money. I have considered crowd funding for raising money for equipment and such, however I do not exactly know what incentives I could provide. I have a small sample of material I could promote, but I just don't know if crowd-funding is the right way. Right now, however, it is the only way. I just need to figure out where I am going.
Usually the fundraiser results in a product, be it a film or a new gadget or something. Once you figure out that angle you can definitely run a campaign. Thanks for commenting Cubical.

***** That's a simple question with a complicated answer. Investors are ordinary people who happen to have money lol. Some filmmakers come from wealthy families with a lot of connections to other wealthy people, so it's easier for them to find investors. Other filmmakers have to produce work, tour their work in film festivals and hopefully meet investors that way. There's no one-size-fits-all way to meet investors other then to make films, share them and meet as many people as you can.
Someday when it's time for a full feature I need to make a crowdfunding project but the problem is, I have to depend on people from other countries because my friends do not care at all! I also invited them to like my film company page and from about 300+ people (friends) only 45 bothered to at least check out the page. I want to continue making films and someday I want to make that full feature but I need a lot of money to make it better. And I won't get any support from my friends. Thanks for sharing your results.

Very informative, thanks for the video. I know the urgency from deadlines could be useful, but personally I prefer crowdfunding websites that allow ongoing campaigns like Rally.org. That way you can build your social presence while gaining financial support simultaneously.
eghelike I haven't looked into Rally.org. The only problem with campaigns without a deadline is you lose the sense of urgency from your contributors. If you give them to much time to think about it they might forget or change their minds.

Does anyone have a lead for services paid to prepare a Kickstarter campaign on your behalf? Even if it’d cost you a thousand dollars or so?
I'm planning to make an action film but the thing is I don't have a great camera and the clothing for the actors I wanted to be authentic to the real deal but that ship has sailed because the real gear is expensive and it totals around $2,500.I really want to start a kick starter but I don't know if it would be good or not.
My advise: before you try making it, make it on something like Minecraft where you don't have to spend money on equipment and you can focus on the story, then once you like the story go for the real deal.

Thanks for the comments Toby. Eventually there will be online distribution. Once we run the entire festival's and pick up a release deal it'll be available. I might be able to release 10 minutes of the movie online for free sometime soon. we'll see.

Sorry the Kickstarter didn't work out - it seems like you did everything right. I wonder if one of your big problems was that your movie was already made. I know it sounds crazy, but it seems like people on Kickstarter like taking something from idea to reality than taking something that already exists and strengthening it. I'm about to try a small Kickstarter myself (just to see how it works) and this video was really helpful. Let me know when you get that IndieGo-Go up and running!

To help local creators in my area (NW Pennsylvania), I started something I call Quickstarter which is designed to help creators new to crowdfunding avoid the kinds of mistakes that kill good ideas and projects early. I researched the hell out of crowdfunding too so I'll give feedback from a fellow aspiring crowdfunder and casual viewer of your campaign...
At 1st watch, the introduction was confusing, it threw the whole thing off for me. It seemed like it had no place in the timeline of the campaign, like it wasn't 'suppose to be there. I think your closeness to the project, seeking authenticity may have overshadowed your ability to provide enough compelling visuals and cinematic timing (in the campaign). Truth be told, I saw more compelling clips in your Seafood Tester (the battle in the doorway was cinema-trailer gold). Sadly, I had to watch the campaign video 2x to realize what the opening clip was about and who was sleeping in the car door. If a casual viewer can't catch what's going on in the opening clip and gets confused thereafter by the seemly contradictory scenes that come afterwards? It's easy to see why this project wasn't backed by many strangers.
I've seen many of your tutorials/tips videos so I know you're damn near a genius in this game so don't think I'm doubting your skills. It's not like you're a crowdfunding guru... although you did have a success storied guy helping, but that's another story for another day.
The campaign ending (closer) had all the right words but not quite the right tone. It was a heartfelt plea for funding, but it comes off like you didn't want to be there asking. Hey, I'm with you, I don't want to ask either but I'd "tone & face-check" before doing that "closer". It felt more like saying "donate or don't donate, doesn't matter to me either way". Some of that is your personality and probably some fatigue too. None of this discounts your perspective on having a large social following, that's infinitely important and priceless advice. Well, that's my 2 cents. I know this project is near and dear to your heart so I hope I wasn't too harsh.
Though you say you wouldn't do it again... In case you change your mind, here's my recommendation: Let persons who don't know you give feedback before launching another campaign. Do a "1st impression" test screening of your campaign. People tend to be honest when they've never had previous contact with the persons in the film/campaign. But you already knew that ;-) I think the same apply for crowdfunding videos.
