More like, "Yo, Chrysalis has a deep and thorough backstory about why she is the way she is, and it has to do with that stupid throne but we're not going to tell you everything just yet but don't worry she's got a plan"
I though Maud was referring to the huge stone slab that was eventually used by Starlight to enslave her village. After the scene cuts out Maud and Pinkie even brought up that vsenario/Starlight controlling everyone.
Even though she very rarely shows emotions, I like Maud Pie since she's a pony anyone can just chill with regardless of interests. Even thought she talks about rocks and geology most of the time
The second they found that secret cave I thought "oh my GOSH! Star Trek Wrath of Khan reference!😱" I also was reminded of How to Train Your Dragon 2, but I still love any Star Trek references they can include in the show.
1:11 especially when after hearing her say that you think about not only the alicorn amulet but also the crystal heart. heck even Chrysalis' throne could fall into that category. kinda has me a little worried for equestria's safety now. great lore introduced but with terrifying implications
2:05 Regarding that underground garden scene, I think that was originally from Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth, which in turn, inspired many other interpretations by Star Trek and so on.
I watched your amwdw with Maud earlker this week, and when I watched this episode I couldn't help but think of your video. Everything from studying rocks at a school, wanting friends who understood. It was almost as if the two (the episode and your video) was written together. To think it was written appart as well as coming out so close to eachother was really fun to see. Loved your video as well as this episode, and couldn't help but enjoy the connections between the two.
To a degree, having the same characters relearn old lessons in different situations is a believable and a natural part of life. Even though we've seen these lessons many times before, it's nevertheless under at least slightly uniquely different set of circumstances in which a character may and probably will fail to consciously apply their past experiences too. We as people often forget our past lessons, make the same mistakes constantly throughout our lives without ever truly perfecting that knowledge, and even consciously refuse to acknowledge past knowledge out of our own pride because, as the excuse goes, "that was different." We never stop growing up or become to old to need insight from even the young and relatively inexperienced.
By the way I watched already few reviews of this episode and nobody actually brought the fact that Mod Pie same as Pinkie Pie has another name and this one is just a nickname. Here true name is Modalina Daisy Pie (as Pinkamena Diane Pie is Pinkies). That means that all members of Pie family might have this kind of complex internal names.
Lots to say about this. First, it really is nice to have these side-character centered episodes. Its new material, fresh, and overall just feels like it gives more creativity to the show creators. I do wonder about Maud's role in future episodes though. We saw her wanting to speak her mind to pinkie and how she was talked over so often she just gave up. Reminds me of a certain shy filly to be honest. As for a rock and a magic being enough to take over equestria? Well thats something for theorists to work with. After all, the most powerful things in equestria ARE rocks. The elements and tree of harmony, the crystal heart, chrysalis's throne, even the staff of the dragons and the alicorn amulet. and lest we all forget... TOM. So yeah, a rock and a magic could definitely be enough to take over equestria. (There is still more that I'm forgetting, like in the latest EQG we had the CRYSTALS bringing equestrian magic into the mirror world. )
A subtle undertone that I noticed after a few viewings was Maud and Starlight’s “silent communication” hints and facial expressions and movements that communicates action more than words. Pinkie tries it (case in point: “Offer to help”) but here subtle is…you know, not so subtle. But being such a extroverted personality it might be hard for here to pick up on that silent communication between hear sister and Starlight. So in a way this episode was heavily focused on silent communications and Pinkies “difficulty” or stresse indused inability to pick up on it… So that Pinkie-sense might not be able to detect some things ;-)
Only thing is, that episode *SHOULD'VE* been in Season 6, so as to explain how Starlight and Discord would at least kind of know each other before the finale.
JCBro2014 Well, you know all those times with mane six, when Starlight is nowhere to be seen? Maybe she spent time with Discord then? Discord is rather lonely after all...
Excellent review. I really liked how Maud got more subtle development and was surprised that Starlight got a role again. Pairing her with Maud was really clever. I also think you are right that they might indeed be building up to another season finale.
With the gem cave my first though was Journey to the centre of the earth, but the Star Trek reverence was a good one too. Would be great to see if they do explore the cave system more in a later episode.
With this episode, especially with Maud; I was surprisingly fascinated by the similarities of Maud's emotions and motivations to what the great Doctor had. It's one of my favorite episodes so-far in the season, as I can't wait to see what Tomorrow's episode shows, with Fluttershy. (And yes, another episode is apparently coming out)
+Brother Orin Maybe Coco Pommel, Lightning Dust, and Derpy? That last one's kind of a long shot but still it's nice to dream. Maybe Flitter, I can't really think of many pegasi that were very popular. They could introduce a new character and that would also be interesting.
I am so happy that Maud moved to Ponyville, I was actually expecting them to make some sort of excuse for her to go to that other place, but nope she's staying in Ponyville! Love it; especially since Maud is one of my favorite characters in the entire series. You know this episode has made me really appreciate Pinkie Pie more, she's really calmed down a lot; which I know is a weird thing to say concerning this episode, but she rarely acts this crazy and random. The only reason she acted this crazy and random was because she wanted her sister Maud to move to Ponyville, so yeah this episode has made me really appreciate how calm she's gotten compared to how she was in season 1 and 2
I only recently found your channel but I do rather enjoy your reviews so far. Honestly not as keen on the therapy visits (again so far), but I appreciate the thought that goes into them. I also enjoy the direction the show has been taken (well, mostly), and it's nice to see that there are people out there who agree, even as some vehemently disagree. For my thoughts on the episode, I have my own story-as-review-video in the works so I'll save that for now. :P
I love the idea of there being a new mane 6 and possibly having new bearers of the elements eventually. If I were to guess who would bear what I would say: Starlight- Magic Starlight has magic comparable to even Twilight as an alicorn and learning how to use said magic for good and learning more and more about friendship I think she'd be best suited for bearing the element of Magic Trixie- Honesty hear me out on this one, despite her past of deceit with her magic act, using the alicorn amulet, and at first using Starlight as a pawn to get to Twilight, she has learned through her mistakes to be a better person, and as such more honest compared to her first couple of appearances before being friends with Starlight. and not to mention, even AppleJack was once a huge liar but learned through her trial and error, so what's not say Trixie can't/hasn't done the same Discord- Loyalty Discord has become very loyal to her few friends. he's learned from his betrayal after Tirek betrayed him, and in To Where and Back Again, when he learned that Fluttershy was captured, he was about ready to kill somebody and the only reason he got captured was because he was overwhelmed by the sight of countless "Fluttershys" crying surrounding him. Maud- Laughter Starlight has gone out of her way to say that Maud could make anything funny, and in Make New Friends but Keep Discord everyone at the gala laughed ten times as much to even Maud's small snark than Discord's entire stand-up act. Granted that wasn't very good competition, but it does show that Maud has been known to make people laugh Thorax-Kindness Thorax was likely the first changeling to have a true friend, and chose to fight his own instincts for the better of other ponies and was the first changeling to find the power of friendship and love and helped them all (aside from Chrisylus) to see it and become better Spike-Generosity Much like Trixie and her deceit we've seen Spike give into his greed on multiple occasions, but through his mistakes has learned to be less selfish and on multiple occasions has been selfless for Twilight and Rarity For anyone who bothered to actually read this, I'm curious what you would think the next bearers and why? this is after all only my own stupid opinion
;-; I'm *loving* this season so far. Pinkie was only a little bit too intrusive (in an uncomfortable way) for my liking, but it never felt out of character, as we know she can be overboard with whatever she's enthusiastic about at the moment. Man, I missed this show so much. Where have they been, it feels like it's been ages. I'm glad I took a time out of the fandom though, it only makes the comeback all the sweeter.
Another really good episode for season 7. I was worried that Maud's dry personality might be getting old after so many episodes, but with the inclusion of Starlight we got to see more to her character and why rocks are her passion. And thinking about it now, many important/powerful objects in the show have been rocks or gemstones. We got Starlight's Cutie Mark Vault in the episode, but what if Maud was the one who told Chrysalis about the special magic-negating stone that she made her throne out of? There is the Elements of Harmony from the Tree of Harmony. I'm a bit surprised that Pinkie didn't think to bring her over there to research it. And of course there's also the Crystal Heart too and the Alicorn Amulet not to mention, Inspiration Manifestation was written on a stone tablet before Rarity made it a spellbook. And Maud mentioning about a stone combined with a spell that could enable one to rule all of Equestria. Who knows what plots Maud could be in now with such knowledge and now that she lives in Ponyville adjacent. I also wonder what she thinks of dragons since they eat gemstones.
David Weiss Maud eats rocks too. Every Pie does, it's their tradition. Maud also are a gem that fell from Rarity's hat and was not interested about anything else.
I could tell from the promo that this episode was going to be good, and by the time I finished watching it, I was not disappointed. It seems that whenever an episode has Maud in it or focuses on her, it can never go wrong. Maudalina Daisy Pie continues to be the most ironically interesting character of the entire show. She still acts the same, yet we continue to learn more and more about her. Having her graduate with a "rocktrate" in "Rockology" was a cute touch to open the episode, her involvement with Starlight prior to her reformation was a curve thrown out of left field (the fandom is now blaming Maud for what happened in the Season 5 premiere), and she actually has quite a few things in common with Starlight Glimmer. That scene they share in the cave, along with when they fly kites together, were both very touching, smart moments. If I'm not mistaken, we see Maud smile not once, but TWICE in this episode. Kudos to Starlight for unknowingly pulling that off! As much as I love Pinkie, she was a bit frustrating to watch in this episode. Don't get me wrong here, she was perfectly in character the whole time, but she took too long to realize her mistakes. I never considered Pinkie to be that smart of a character, but all the while I was watching the episode, I was waiting for her to catch on to the fact that Starlight and Maud were already clicking without her help. Sure, Pinkie gave Maud a literal shove when they first met, but that was all she had to do. The lengths she went to ensure that they were getting along, though entertaining, were also distracting. If you think about it, however, you understand why Pinkie is acting the way she is. Remember, the conflict was on which part of Equestria Maud would move to in order to further her career, NOT on making friends, and the episode was fairly clever with that diversion. When the episode reached about the seven-minute mark, I thought that was the entire episode and that there wasn't much left to the story. I was intrigued to find out how the rest of the episode would play out. I ended up getting so wrapped up in the side story of Maud meeting and befriending Starlight that I almost lost track of her main motive for being in Ponyville in the first place. All that Pinkie was trying to do was convince Maud to move to Ponyville, and she tried using whatever leverage she could find to help her do that. As for the little funny moments, those were executed perfectly. I'm so glad I wasn't alone in making the Pinkie-speaking-whale-like-Dory joke. Lyra and Bon Bon's cameo, as well as Derpy's, were also both comedic highlights. Taking a step back, I'm totally agreeing with Dr. Wolf's recognition of seeing all the secondary characters of the show being brought to the foreground. Sure, we see a ton of Pinkie Pie in this episode, with a bit of Starlight thrown into it, but so far, we've been seeing all sorts of recurring characters becoming the focal points this season: Celestia in "Celestial Advice," Trixie in "All Bottled Up," Flurry Heart in "A Flurry of Emotions," and now Maud in "Rock Solid Friendship." At first, I felt like the mane 6 (sans-Twilight) were starting to be swept aside to make room for secondary character development, but this episode proved that they still have a presence in the show, and are cleverly woven into the stories in such a way that we almost don't notice them. At this point, we pretty much know the mane 6's personalities front-to-back, so when we put them next to characters who don't have as much development, we pay more attention to the latter. What a brilliant strategy for giving development to both! I really hope they keep this up, because if they do, it will open the door to more possibilities for character interactions and the stories that could ensue from them. Overall, "Rock Solid Friendship" is yet another gem that's keeping Season 7's start roaring. We got to see more Maud, more to Maud's personality, and more of Pinkie's zaniness, even if it was a bit much at times. Whatever you're doing, show staff, by all means, PLEASE keep up the good work!
I don't think that statement from Maud about a rock to rule the world was strictly a joke - perhaps it was more of a way for her to confirm that Starlight really wasn't interested in power anymore. After all, she wasn't exactly there to see Starlight's transformation throughout the season 6.
+ZGuy0fSci Are you trying to say I use lots more words than necessary :D? If so, point taken, I was never a master of brevity :P. EDIT: About the other part, yeah, she could be joking and checking Starlight's intentions simultaneously.
Or there's another possibility: For the first time, the series is actually using linear continuity, where references only make sense if you see episodes in a specific order. The reference we're discussing could be laying pipe for this season's finale, which we still know nothing about.
To the arguement that she may have been too hyper this episode. Please consider that one of the closest, if the not the closest, pony to her in all of Equestria was considering living in her own very town. She was extremely overjoyed to find out that she will no longer have to travel so far to meet her. So her being this "overbearing" makes sense.
This is my favorite episode of the new season thus far. Quite possibly one of my top 5 favorite episodes of the show. I loved the interaction between Starlight and Maud. Starlight was able to appreciate Maud in a way that none of the Remane 5 were able to and she even made Maud smile. Twice. And I think this is the first time we've seen Maud show annoyance toward her sister.
Loved this episode! But dangit! Wrath of Khan is one of my favorite movies ever, and I feel like a dope that I didn't pick up on that cave as a reference. I know hope that when we get the episode with Shatner that he sees it and says something like "this seems familiar". (OK I really doubt that would happen!) But we could have a fanfic where Equestria is actually the planet where the research took place and the ponies are the result of the Genesis effect. Too bad I can't write.
Loved the episode, Flurry of emotions and this one brought up a good promise for the rest of the season c: I still would've wanted a two-part premiere, though. It still bugs me out a little bit, that they didn't do that and the second episode was a... Trixie episode :l
I don't think taking over Equestria with a stone is a joke, we've seen a rock throne that can absorb magic on Discord's power level and Twilight's table map is a rock time machine with the right spell.
the alicorn amulet had a stone in it. was this a reference to that? is this a hint to something in the future? am i bringing up something that means absolutely nothing? dun dun ... duunnn!
at first I was going to say that pinkie was being slightly out of character but considering past episodes like filli vanilli I decided against it. My first instinct about Maud moving to Ponyville was that it would make sense considering that the everfree forest property would be a great place for anybody in any field of science to study. Between the crystal cave and the Luna's dream I have to wonder who's in charge of landscapes? I really felt for Maud because pinkie's actions actually reminded me of a close relative of my own....... way too much at times. Also pinkie has solidified her place as "most terrifying pony to have a nervous breakdown" ..... Also, Maud's middle name is Daisy? aaand that's how Batman got his neighbor.
I'm willing to bet they'll bring Trixie into the mix, since her and Starlight are friends, and she also worked on the Pie's rock farm back in Season 3.
LOVED IT! And yeah, given they have Shatner this season, no way that wasn't meant to be similar. Pinkie.. I was fine. This was 100% in character for her. Everyone has their flaws, it's simply being realistic. This was a combination of her being both over excited, and also desperate. Leading to her trying way to hard. While neither of the other two did anything to tell her to knock it off early. This was perfect and show that.. yeah as mature as they are, as much as they've grown... the Mane 6 are not perfect, still have stuff to learn. The show gets the truth of the saying "Only the dead have nothing left to learn."
It was a bit over the top from normal to be 'normal' character, but still we have known her while 'in character' to be when triggered to go a bit ott due to her more extremely Extroverted sort of OCD nature, that is what makes her as good as she is at what she does but also tends to be her weakness... *It could have been better written, so less a fault of hers so much.
It's no coincidence with the Therapy Visit. We just have two group of talented, intelligent and creative people analysis the same thought out characters. Similar conclusions are to expected. Just a quality feature of the show we love.
*"The right rock with the right magic, [and Equestria would be Stoned]..."* _the Dragon Lord's Scepter?_ ;''3 Either way, while Pinkie was a tad more 'overthetop' than normal to the point of cringe at a few points in the episode, It was overall a good Slice of Life entry with some good developments that helps set the foundation for future characterizations & story. And to be honest, *building a bigger better world of characters up from existing cast with whom more cast can be added into the fold in easy unobtrusive ways, is perhaps the best idea and hope going forwards we could have had,* instead of pulling a Sponge Bob.
also though Doc, I'd say be a tad more careful on the overly casual use of the term "weaknesses" when referring to _Character Traits_ or biases... *Often our weaknesses are what play into our greatest strengths, yet not everything that constitutes a quirk' is per say a "weakness" to be removed.*
When I looked at that episode on Netflix as maud said “with the right stone you could rule all of equestria if you wanted to” and I was like uhhhhh what?
I'm all for giving secondary charachters more screentime, but I really don't want Dr.wolf's theory about them replacing the mane six to come true, and I'm really gettitng tired of him bringing it up with each new episode. Those six are our main charachters and I feel there's still plenty of interesting lessons and stories you can use with them. This episode was proof of that. An old charachter learned a brand new lesson while still giving time for the new ones. That's good, I'm cool with that. If our main charachters become eclipsed however, that's going to cross the line for me.
Steven Universe *_does_* have good episodes that have a focus on side-characters. Just because you don't like them doesn't make them "not good". That's not how goodness works. Everything is good, because badness isn't real. Only the ignorant think otherwise.
Wait, so you DIDN'T plan to write Maud's therapy visit in a way that was strikingly similar to her struggles she was facing in the recent episode? This whole time, I thought you did. That's why you posted it the day before the episode. You're saying that was just a coincident? Holy cow, what are the odds?
I think something big will happen soon. I have a feeling that we will not get a two part season finale but AND episode 26 cliffhanger. Did you see the gem in the cave that looked like Sunset cutie mark? Foreshadowing? I think something is going happen in the middle of the season.
What is particularly interesting to me personally is the message that even though something (e.g. Maud and Starlight becoming best shi... er, I mean best *friends*) would happen naturally if you let it, trying to force it can actually lead to the exact opposite result. A lesson that speaks to me as that guy who will most likely poke his tongue on a frozen iron pole just because somebody specifically told him to *not* do exactly that...
I just hope to see Starlight reunites Maud and Trixie who know each other from Trixies rock farm days, and it's revealed that in a moment of self doubt Trixie told Maud she wished her magic was stronger and Maud told Trixie about an enchanted ruby called the Alicorn Amulet, and Trixie ran off while Maud told her about the side effects.
I felt that Pinkie relearned the same moral as back in "Maud Pie" and "a Friend in Deed". namely, she can't always force ponies to be friends. Some are compatible and some aren't. At least we got to see some more of Maud, who is a geologists favorite pony.
I bet Chrysalis is going to use the super-powerful rock magic to try take over Equestria and take revenge on Starlight... but with Maud's help, they can totally stop her ;)
I still think Maud, Starlight and Trixie should have a fun weekend in Las Pegasus. Other than that I loved the idea that Maud gave Starlight a heads up on the stone, it fits that Maud really has trouble focusing on anything other than rocks and that she recognizes that in herself. And if you realize you need friends Ponyville -with the Palace of Friendship right there- is the place to go. I also like the fact that they have pizza in Equestria. I don't think we've seen that before and I wonder if Twilight didn't bring that back from the human world.
What happens in las Pegasus, Stays in las Pegasus... Unless its them waking up with no memories of what happened the night before, Trixie is missing and Maude got married to some guy named Chet, while Starlight has the door from a police car chained to one hoof.
Skytower Gnome Actually in Pinkie Pride, you know, the one that had a guest star of Weird Al with a character known as Cheese Sandwich, there was a giant pizza near the end during the singing montage*
I'm gonna say now, they gave Pinkie some epic facial expressions this episode. Also, who else saw that cave in scene and thought "Who in their right mind gave Pinkie BOMBS?!?"
*tHiS ePiSodE fOrCed Her dOwN oUr ThRoAtS aS wElL aS thE rEsT oF tHe sEaSon, I wAnT ThE sHoW wRitErS tO gEt RiD Of hEr sO tHaT sUnsEt cAn jOiN tHe MaIN cAsT UwU!1!1!1!1!1*
I really liked this episode, and I think it's smart for the creators to put more attention on the secondary charecters considering the mane six will be in the spotlight for a movie in September
I never thought of the new area of the gem cave was a references to star track. I thought it was a references to the Disney 2001 lost city of Atlantis. when the main cast were deep below the earth exploring the caves to find Atlantis.
Boulder had his own chair at the graduation ceremony and later on had a tiny lumber jack. XD also cave eels last time seeing those was well what season 2
I liked how every other character had to do something to their face to transform into an impersonation of each other. But Pinkie didn't even bother screwing up her face or doing something with her hair in order to impersonate Maud. She just flat out switched XD
Hey doc. Another possible reason why we see lesd of the mane six this season is that the voice actors might have been less availabe. after all this year we get the MLP movie and three equestria girls shorts. It's possible that this season is written to compensate for the fact that the voice actors of the mane six have less recording time.
2:13 I actually brought it up in the live stream I was in X3> So I'm happy I wasn't the only one who thought of that as well ^^ This episode also goes along with the theory I made in my collab with Tricky about having a new character group to choose from, alongside the Mane6 and the CMCs. If it's true, we need 2 pegasi and an earth pony.
I'm just surprised they have dynamite in the MLP Universe...though it would explain how Canterlot was built unto the side of a mountain like Vlad the Impaler's.
So Maud told Starlight when she was still evil about a stone that is strong enough to hold an entire village worth of cutie marks. Wait so does that mean the glasses that held the Mane 6 cutie marks were just smelted stone or were they transfigurated special rock-glass thingy.
So we have the socially ostracized Trixie, the socially awkward Maud, and socially terrified Starlight, and the start of season hint that Starlight is going to leave. I suspect they will add two more ponies with socially issues, and they will all be off to spread friendship, doing more day to day problems as opposed to the major events like the map quests.
I say that both Starlight and Maud are a good connection, I'm impressed that Pinkie made an impression of her own sister, I bet in the future episode Starlight was trying to get along both Trixie and Maud, but the unfortunate event will turn sour when Trixie is about to recognize Maud back at the Rock Farm, what do you think?
Brony Meister yes. Trixie had a curious reaction to Pinkie when the discussion turned to rock farm earlier... She's hiding something. Maud might also know.
My favorite part is that these past few episodes have focused on entirely different kinds of friendship dynamics. With Trixie, you've got someone who is learning friendship and magic and social behaviors at the same time. Plus with Trixie, her overconfidence adds a positivity that Starlight doesn't really have (Trixie is almost as optimistic as Pinkie, just in a different way). But unlike Pinkie, Trixie will plot revenge and make enemies because of her optimism, plus she doesn't really know how friendships work. She's probably used to being in a town for only a few days before moving on, never having enough time to make friends or learn anything useful. (I'm actually getting the feeling that her family situation probably wasn't that good, and there was a lot of moving around since she doesn't even have childhood friends) Maud brings in something else as well. A friend who doesn't talk about feelings is pretty common (and in her case, its plenty healthy, some people just don't like that). They bond over shared experiences and discussions, which fits with Starlight a lot better than Twilight's methods of scheduling bonding. While the kinds of bonding we see with Twilight and her friends are great, there isn't as much discussion of why they enjoy something, or talking about real things. We know AJ loves apples, but why, besides her family? Maud loves rocks because of the history, and the knowledge, and the fact that they're nonjudgmental. She loves them so much she got a rocktorate. The thing that really gets me is that these friendships seem a bit more real? My close friends and I don't talk about our feelings or sing about why we're friends (that one was a joke at episode 2). We discuss the things we love, but we don't talk about how they make us feel, because we're not that kind of people.
I didn't think of this for my review but I could had made another persona joke of Pinky wanting to get Starlight's and Maud's bond to maximum level. But so far I don't feel like the first four episodes have wowed me yet. I'm still waiting for something really good.
It's amazing, but it really does seem like each of the three characters are following up on things from their therapy visits. It especially works well since Maud's visit was just released.
The only thing I am needing right now IS A ZECORA EPISODE! Come on guys! We have a whole new culture to explore with Zecora and Zebras! Let us see that in action!
It was alright. I was kinda expecting a little more between the interaction of Maud Pie and Starlight Glimmer but it was far from a bad episode. The episode where Maud first meets the mane six was way more amusing xD
Actually, because I'm a book nerd, that hidden cavern reminded of Pellucidar. A hidden underworld in the stories of Edgar Rice Burrows that contained a prehistoric ecosystem. I almost expected a plesiosaur peak out of the lake. Homer Simpson: I've gone back in time to when Dinosaurs weren't confined to zoos!
This is one episode where Pinkie's over the top behavior feels perfectly natural. She's desperate to get her sister to move to Ponyville. And when Pinkie Pie wants something, she goes to ridiculous lengths to get it. She also finally gets bit in the flank for her poor communication skills. At the same time, I kind of feel sorry for her. Ever since she got her cutie mark, all she's wanted is for her family to express the same enthusiasm for life that she has. But that's just not in their personalities. The only Pie sister even remotely as outwardly passionate is Limestone, and she expresses it with possessiveness and a domineering attitude. Pinkie knows her family loves her, but she doesn't feel like they understand her. Not even her twin sister, to whom she should be the closest, really seems to get Pinkie. Maud has probably stated outright that she gets Pinkie, and is certainly by far the most patient with her. Of anypony. Which leads Pinkie to believe that Maud is her one hope of converting anypony in her family to the Pinkie Pie "way."
I felt this episode retreaded over the same lesson that Pinkie Pie should have learned in the S4 episode of "Maud Pie" and also from S2 of "Friend in Deed". In both episodes she is trying to create a bond where there isn't one by trying to hard to the point it is breaking a bond instead of forming one. The only change in this episode is she is trying to create a bond where one is naturally forming but is having the break down effect. Pinkie's purpose is the creation of bonds so I think it's out of character to not see a bond already forming. The two previous episodes I mentioned shows she can see a bond not forming so she can find a way to break the problem. Would it be true that she would naturally see a bond forming without her having to try to create the bond herself?
I loved this episode and that it came so soon after Mauds Therapy visit. I must say this season and especiallythis episode are really great if it goes on like this this is deffenatly going to be my favorit season
"With the right stone you could take over all of Equestria." Am I the only one who thought about Chrysalis' rock-throne? There's a story there, guys.
More like, "Yo, Chrysalis has a deep and thorough backstory about why she is the way she is, and it has to do with that stupid throne but we're not going to tell you everything just yet but don't worry she's got a plan"
I'm just waiting for a fanfic about Maud being a villain and using rocks as her source of power. Hell, I may write one after a while.
Arkhivez also the alicorb amulet as a gem in it
The Crystal Heart, the Alicorn Amulet, the Elements of Harmony... there's some pretty powerful rocks in Equestria!
Even thought she talks about rocks and geology most of the time
When they saw that garden in the Gem Cave, I thought of that moment in Disney's Dinosaur when the main characters found their new home.
OMG YOU *BLEW MY MIND* with that _Wrath of Khan_ reference! My brain was like, "I know I've seen this before...." XD
Upon seeing that Star Trek reference, a single word rang-out in my head... "MAUD...!!!!!".
Only the dead can't learn. I t doesn't matter how experienced you are, even the most experienced can still have things to learn.
And, if you believe in reincarnation, you can learn many lessons over different lifetimes!
(There is still more that I'm forgetting, like in the latest EQG we had the CRYSTALS bringing equestrian magic into the mirror world. )
A subtle undertone that I noticed after a few viewings was Maud and Starlight’s “silent
communication” hints and facial expressions and movements that communicates action
more than words. Pinkie tries it (case in point: “Offer to help”) but here subtle
is…you know, not so subtle. But being such a extroverted personality it might be hard for
here to pick up on that silent communication between hear sister and Starlight.
So in a way this episode was heavily focused on silent communications
and Pinkies “difficulty” or stresse indused inability to pick up on it… So that
Pinkie-sense might not be able to detect some things ;-)
I feel like this season is about Starlight bonding with secondary characters? Discordant Harmony might be her and Discord episode.
MrConredsX That why they change the color of the logo
Season 7 is still going strong and I hope it keeps up
Excellent review.
(And yes, another episode is apparently coming out)
Trixie, Maud.
So, who's next in Starlight's group of friends?
One more earth pony and two pegasi.
Lightning Dust!
Thorax if you count him, Discord as well. Although if we're strictly going by ponies. Starlight, Trixie, Maud not sure on others.
Buck that, go broader. Get Gabby, Thorax and Ember in the group.
The only reason she acted this crazy and random was because she wanted her sister Maud to move to Ponyville, so yeah this episode has made me really appreciate how calm she's gotten compared to how she was in season 1 and 2
you called it. and yes it does feel like we may be creating a new cast to focus on. We kind of need it.
well it is very interesting about what are the possibilities that rocks in that world can do.
If I were to guess who would bear what I would say:
Starlight- Magic
Starlight has magic comparable to even Twilight as an alicorn and learning how to use said magic for good and learning more and more about friendship I think she'd be best suited for bearing the element of Magic
Trixie- Honesty
hear me out on this one, despite her past of deceit with her magic act, using the alicorn amulet, and at first using Starlight as a pawn to get to Twilight, she has learned through her mistakes to be a better person, and as such more honest compared to her first couple of appearances before being friends with Starlight. and not to mention, even AppleJack was once a huge liar but learned through her trial and error, so what's not say Trixie can't/hasn't done the same
Discord- Loyalty
Discord has become very loyal to her few friends. he's learned from his betrayal after Tirek betrayed him, and in To Where and Back Again, when he learned that Fluttershy was captured, he was about ready to kill somebody and the only reason he got captured was because he was overwhelmed by the sight of countless "Fluttershys" crying surrounding him.
Maud- Laughter
Starlight has gone out of her way to say that Maud could make anything funny, and in Make New Friends but Keep Discord everyone at the gala laughed ten times as much to even Maud's small snark than Discord's entire stand-up act. Granted that wasn't very good competition, but it does show that Maud has been known to make people laugh
Thorax-Kindness
Thorax was likely the first changeling to have a true friend, and chose to fight his own instincts for the better of other ponies and was the first changeling to find the power of friendship and love and helped them all (aside from Chrisylus) to see it and become better
Spike-Generosity
Much like Trixie and her deceit we've seen Spike give into his greed on multiple occasions, but through his mistakes has learned to be less selfish and on multiple occasions has been selfless for Twilight and Rarity
For anyone who bothered to actually read this, I'm curious what you would think the next bearers and why? this is after all only my own stupid opinion
I love this episode lmao, Starlight and Maud are super believable as friends and I love it
Aaaaaaa
I love Maud
;-; I'm *loving* this season so far.
I loooove Maud Pie. In my opinion she is without a doubt the best secondary character.
Oh yeah. Slipped my mind.
YAY!!! DRWolf referenced my theory! I hope he actually did read my comment and was refering to it.
I loved this episode! I didn't expect it, but Maud and Starlight just "fit" together. This episode showed me a side of starlight I really liked too
I like the thought that besides rocks she was considering Ponyville because of Pinkie Pie
Yeah, that actually makes sense.
then again, *nothing ever really strictly has to only ever just be one exact thing.*
^
Three words. The Philosopher's Stone.
Powerful stones isn't exactly an unknown concept. I don't think Maud was joking.
Dewdropmon Doesn't mean she never has though, like when they still lived in the rock farm...
The reason for the change is because they realize they can't force the characters to relearn a bunch of the same lessons.
Cameo Shadowness cough Fluttershy S1-S4
jaqwon14 So true!
jaqwon14 And don't forget AJ
pikachu fan 4 life 😶 *nods*
Yup and I'm actually happy that they're doing that, relearning the same lesson over and over is just ridiculous at this point.
Loved the episode, Flurry of emotions and this one brought up a good promise for the rest of the season c:
I still would've wanted a two-part premiere, though.
Yeah and starlight's not really comfortable joking about that stuff anymore anyway.
That could lead to some interesting story arcs in the future. I can already see Twilight getting overly excited about Maud and the table map :D
the alicorn amulet had a stone in it. was this a reference to that? is this a hint to something in the future? am i bringing up something that means absolutely nothing? dun dun ... duunnn!
at first I was going to say that pinkie was being slightly out of character but considering past episodes like filli vanilli I decided against it.
Also pinkie has solidified her place as "most terrifying pony to have a nervous breakdown"
..... Also, Maud's middle name is Daisy?
aaand that's how Batman got his neighbor.
I'm willing to bet they'll bring Trixie into the mix, since her and Starlight are friends, and she also worked on the Pie's rock farm back in Season 3.
I'm definitely hoping for a future episode with some friction between Starlight, Trixie and Maud. That could make for a interesting episode.
@@booklover4330Hello I'm from the future and you predicted it.
I couldn't have said it better myself.
Having Shatner in the series and then referencing ST2... Well...
Spike: I have been... and ever shall be... Your freind...
Despite Pinkie going a bit too overboard, I enjoyed this episode, 9/10 ^^
Is no one going to talk about "Maudlin Daisy Pie"s name
was that her full name? since when?
Pinkie says it at one point this ep.
+Brony Meister: Since this episode.
Brony Meister at least since today
Maudlina Daisy Pie
It's no coincidence with the Therapy Visit. We just have two group of talented, intelligent and creative people analysis the same thought out characters. Similar conclusions are to expected. Just a quality feature of the show we love.
I thought the same thing there. Those connections were absolutely flawless!
Dear god... DWK was right... The fandom and the show are on the same wave length! WE HAVE BECOME ONE!!! AHHHHHHHH!!
*"The right rock with the right magic, [and Equestria would be Stoned]..."*
_the Dragon Lord's Scepter?_ ;''3
Either way, while Pinkie was a tad more 'overthetop' than normal to the point of cringe at a few points in the episode, It was overall a good Slice of Life entry with some good developments that helps set the foundation for future characterizations & story.
I thought it was one of the best episodes so far this season. Every pony was dang near perfect
Pinkie was a bit unbearable at times though.
Steel Soul The Bronie must have low standards i guess xD
She did annoy me a little bit from time to time but I think Maud being there was partly the cause to make her so random/crazy excited.
When I looked at that episode on Netflix as maud said “with the right stone you could rule all of equestria if you wanted to” and I was like uhhhhh what?
Unlike Steven Universe, MLP has good episodes focusing on Secondary characters. I'd love to be proven wrong, Miss Sugar.
Only the ignorant think otherwise.
agreed. Even the 'secondary' episodes are good, and add to rather than FROM the series.
What is Rocknaldo and why does it make me ill?
3:08 now that you mentioned it when maud was in the eals mouth I was like “MAUD YOU KNUCKLEHEAD GET OUTTA THERE”
Wait, so you DIDN'T plan to write Maud's therapy visit in a way that was strikingly similar to her struggles she was facing in the recent episode? This whole time, I thought you did. That's why you posted it the day before the episode. You're saying that was just a coincident? Holy cow, what are the odds?
If one person was able to think up a concept, who's to say that a second person can't?
0:28 YES! Im so glad I wasn't the only one who thought Pinkie sounded a bit like Dory in that scene!
I think something big will happen soon. I have a feeling that we will not get a two part season finale but AND episode 26 cliffhanger. Did you see the gem in the cave that looked like Sunset cutie mark? Foreshadowing?
I think something is going happen in the middle of the season.
The pizza "delivery" joke though... This kind of gag never works with me but here I burst out laughing.
I still maintain the theory that they are preparing the ground for a spinoff.
I felt that Pinkie relearned the same moral as back in "Maud Pie" and "a Friend in Deed". namely, she can't always force ponies to be friends. Some are compatible and some aren't. At least we got to see some more of Maud, who is a geologists favorite pony.
I bet Chrysalis is going to use the super-powerful rock magic to try take over Equestria and take revenge on Starlight... but with Maud's help, they can totally stop her ;)
Spoiler: Katniss and Peeta win the Hunger Games together.
I think PETA is overeager, personally.
Skytower Gnome
Actually in Pinkie Pride, you know, the one that had a guest star of Weird Al with a character known as Cheese Sandwich, there was a giant pizza near the end during the singing montage*
I'm gonna say now, they gave Pinkie some epic facial expressions this episode. Also, who else saw that cave in scene and thought "Who in their right mind gave Pinkie BOMBS?!?"
1:11 hey, maybe that’s what happens in G5!
I hope they make another episode centering on the other minor characters.
Hopefully with Muffin and Dr. Whoves.
Insert wave of Starlight bashers saying this episode was "Bad" because she was in it.

Starlight likes kites! Don´t tell anypony!
I really liked this episode, and I think it's smart for the creators to put more attention on the secondary charecters considering the mane six will be in the spotlight for a movie in September
Just like the dark stone Chrysalis carved her throne from.
I never thought of the new area of the gem cave was a references to star track. I thought it was a references to the Disney 2001 lost city of Atlantis. when the main cast were deep below the earth exploring the caves to find Atlantis.
Absolute.
100%
FAVORITE EPISODE OF THE ENTIRE F**KING SERIES.
Boulder had his own chair at the graduation ceremony and later on had a tiny lumber jack. XD also cave eels last time seeing those was well what season 2
Speaking of Star trek, I hear Will Shatner is going be guest starring in an episode. I'd love to know which one.
2:13 I actually brought it up in the live stream I was in X3>
So I'm happy I wasn't the only one who thought of that as well ^^
This episode also goes along with the theory I made in my collab with Tricky about having a new character group to choose from, alongside the Mane6 and the CMCs. If it's true, we need 2 pegasi and an earth pony.
A certain kind of rock paired with magic has the potential to rule the world. It's confirmed, Boulder is the Season 7 Finale Villain.
"She hasn't enslaved anyone lately."
*COUGH**COUGH*EveryLittleThingSheDoes*COUGH*
If there happened to be a need for ponies to need to bear the elements of harmony again, what if there were more than 6 bearers of the elements?
What really got me was the actual name of Maud Pie. I wonder what are the actual names of the other Pie sisters
I could watch infinite seasons of a series about Maud, Starlight and Trixie
I think Maud might play a few roles in a few fanfics. Did you know that Maud can tell which rock it is while she is holding it?
What if that statement of having tremendous power with the right stone and magic is actually foreshadowing for a future episode
Possibly, we'll just have to see.
My hypothesis, new Mane 6. Starlight, Trixie, Thorax, Discord, Maud, and of course Boulder. With Spike being Spike.
(I'm actually getting the feeling that her family situation probably wasn't that good, and there was a lot of moving around since she doesn't even have childhood friends)
Maud brings in something else as well.
Being a fan of flutter shy I know you will be happy to know that the new episode about. Flutter shy is on TH-cam
Dr. Maudalina Daisy Pie at your service.
No, Doctor, you're NOT alone when it comes to comparing the Genesis cave when i saw that scene. :)
I thought during this episode, "...So are they on a date?"
