How These Metal Sculptures Move With The Wind

  • Anthony Howe has been sculpting kinetic structures for nearly 30 years. In 1996, he filled his own sculpture park with metallic pieces that dance in the wind. His work has even appeared at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the holiday display for Barneys in NYC! Howe hopes his artwork gives viewers a moment of semi-meditative peace.

Nope it wouldn't generate power at all because they would have to install motors and gear stuff which would increase the friction
Which would result in these structure not moving at all

You mean he is one of the few people who realized the depth, beauty, and elegance of all the engineering and mathematical functions, that are all around us making our life so comfortable and he used very simple engineering functions to relax with? The higher spirit in engineering is way up much higher or deeper than that. What you see is only an inefficient bucket used in a Pelton wheel or a Francis turbine which is much more efficient than that shown in this video. Still what is seen in the video is so relaxing due to its simplicity and may be appreciated by the general public like a fairy tale with its fantasy and imagination is published for the enjoyment of children.

Obviously, this gentleman like most engineers saw the beauty and elegance and harmony and rhythm of the silent and invisible engineering and mathematics functions and operators in any working static and dynamic machine and simply, added a simple shape that would create emotions in people's minds rather than a utility machine for their physical comfort. To any engineer, the activity in a V-8 piston engine or a suspension bridge of any design or simply any machine in the kitchen including the refrigerator, the microwave cooker, the telephone, the suspension and geometry of the steering system in a car of the front suspension of a motorcycle of a bicycle to make it self centering. The switching functions in any time multiplex system handling high-speed data or the old frequency multiplexing in radio and TV while what goes on in the wooden and plastic boxes of any TV, any camera, any power station or the engine room of an ocean liner or the burn in the jet engine of an airliner, all these are just as beautiful and more complex than what we see in this video.
Whip and Loop antenna engineers have been dealing with that function we see in this video for more than a hundred years as the electromagnetic field along a transmission line in an AC transmission, be this matched or unmatched the transmitted and reflected wave ration will set up a similar function, which unfortunately is unavailable to the human sensors and artist occasionally come up with something simple that approximated to the activity in engineering. The system shown makes use of a simple behavior of dynamic flow as in a Pelton wheel with a difference. The blades in a compressor and those of a turbine in a jet engine are somewhat related where buckets are used to make the Pelton wheel and the turbine disc go around using a reaction or an impulse effect. The whole effect is exactly the same as we have in any long transmission lines and the fact that he used loops rather than a straight transmission line, the wave motion is more like that in an atom where the electrons orbit the protons in a wave motion where when the electron is released from the atom it sets a handful of functions all related to that shape. The behavior of waveguides and cavity resonators also contain a beauty that is not available to the human eye and the microwave in the kitchen with the magneton circulating both the electric and magnetic field around its multi-cavity is just as beautiful and elegant and even more complex than what we see in the video.
While we live on earth, most humans develop their emotions more than their logic, reason and rational thinking, and visual operators and heard harmony described art, through the titillations of emotions always will always trump the invisible operators which make our universe and were the reason of our evolution. After appreciating this beautiful sculpture I would like to invite readers to see the beauty of Navier stokes equations that are being applied around this sculpture to make it move so gracefully, but what activity which is not seen must also be appreciated by the public. It is about time that the general public would be made aware of all the unseen and silent beauty that exists around them. All reality around us in any form needs to be appreciated deeply and emotions must never blind and trump the logic, reason and rational behavior of what is around us but cannot be seen nor heard.
