CV, pitch, frequency, and the surprising meaning of exponential FM

- As the step before a video diving into frequency modulation, I thought it was important to get everyone up to speed about how pitch & frequency relate to each other and are implemented not just in modular VCOs, but also under the hood of a lot of fixed-architecture synths.
If you've never really thought about how 440 hz turns into an A, why we use a volt per octave standard, or what's important about doubling the frequency of a pitch, then this video will help get you ready for the next video, all about Frequency Modulation. - เพลง
You videos are super inspirational! Thanks!
Wow, thank you! That's really nice of you to say.
Agreed, some the best synth content on TH-cam 🙏
Thankyou..the Buchla system does have a pleasing symmetry to it..i think i need to get into the habit of tuning my oscillators.
Yes! My appetite has been whetted, indeed!
I'm ready to buckle up and learn bout some more fm.
You are my favorite TH-cam channel on any topic.
Truly setting the model here.
Perfect balance of information and personality. Pleasing and coherent design aesthetic.
Zero engagement hype trickery (click bait)
Bravo Jeff!
Wow, thank you! That's incredibly nice of you to say.
@@SoundVoltagecan’t wait for the FM video
Now we need a video on phenomenology.
Don't get me started!
Beautiful explanation.
Glad you think so!
Another fascinating and well constructed video! I suppose the oscillator is kind of like a string on an acoustic instrument. It can be any base pitch, but you need to tune it to the right frequency.
Don Buchla was a genius. It makes so much sense that he worked at 1.2V/oct.
great content! thanks for bringing info to the people, the topic is hard to grasp at times.
Glad it was helpful!
Appreciate you. Thanks for the videos.
Thank you, I'm hope they're useful.
Great video! Maybe I missed it, but did you explain why the oscillator you're using has two identical CV inputs? Is it specifically to do the type of sequencing with transposition you did earlier in the video, or is there another intended application?
@Perceptes In the end, I think the reason just came down to "well, I have a spot on the front panel for it..." :) Almost certainly one of the reasons was to be able to do that transposition, but that designer makes weird modules to do weird things, and this just gave it more flexibility for weirdness.
Good video, but I'd have used B flat as the sample note.
I gave some real thought to referencing The Simpons with "The B-sharps" but I figured I would get a whole lot of comments about that. :)
Exponential FM is why people tend to gravitatate toward linear VCAs and most all volume is linear. Ive ran into a few compressors that seem to utilize a bit of exponential behaviors those can be midly annoying too.
You can use a sequencer and a sequential switch, instead of 2 sequencers, by the way.
My first wiggles were on that exact kit! Picked it up at a garage sale with my allowance money. Got home and worked through a few projects until I got the “security alarm” which sounded off when the circuit was broken. Then I was like… can I change that beep? 🤔
a bit a cliffhanger
YEAH DECENT
great video, but thats why i use midi, seems i need to be good at math to use modular😂
Naw, you don't need to know math with modular any more than you need to understand the individual bytes going back and forth with Midi. I think of it that way because I'm a math guy, but you can have a long, happy life with modular and never really have to think about it. But for people who do want to go deeper -- there's this video. :)
my appetite is so wet for FM
daddy
This is the part where I like and subscribe.
Ah ha! My cunning plan worked! Thanks ;)
