This is great and accessible tutorial. Would love to see updates or new installments of the series to spread the word. I changed my southern California yard over along with the parkway and put two groundcover native manzanita plants which are nicely growing the fill the space instead of a meadow of grasses.
Oh, this is perfect timing! I've just been YOLO adding plants to my park strip. (The previous owners had just added a weed barrier and small stones to dress it up.)
Liked, Subscribed, Shared, and Commented!! Love this specifically because it helps the beginning gardener to be reasonable about time and expenses!! And especially finding the resources to off-set the costs!
Kinda unrelated but, do you think you'll do some followup videos on some of the old projects you've done videos about? Just found your channel and I'm interested in seeing how those projects have been progressing and growing!
IT is much easier to Sheet Mulch over grass like this than it is to dig it up. Digging it up wastes all the goodness that is in the sod that could be used to feed and retain moisture for the future plants. And it is much easier to do than dog up the sod.
We remove the sod and compost it elsewhere, we have noticed that if we don't take the sod out, the mulch spills over onto the sidewalk and looks pretty awful! With the turf removed, we have a natural retaining border with the sidewalk and curb that keeps things nice and tidy!
Instead of spending money to remove grass sod, why not sheet mulch with cardboard on top of the grass, then top the cardboard with pine needles or free wood chips from ChipDrop? After some decomposition, you can dig a hole in cardboard/mulch to plant whatever you want. Ask neighbors and friends to share cuttings. This doesn’t have to be expensive.
We dig out the grass and compost it, the main reason being that the mulch and bark will just spill out all over the place when people walk over the park strip. Using the curb and sidewalk as "natural" edging material keeps everything nice and tidy!
Don't dig up the grass. Too much time or money. Use clean cardboard or contractors paper covered in compost and hardwood mulch. Dig out your holes and plant. I have used this technique for years and never had the turf grass grow back.

We're located in the second driest climate in the United States, so we're very invested in encouraging folks to cut down on their water consumption for landscaping. Since we're primarily a design firm, a lot of our content is focused on the region we work out of, so this video might seem a little strange for folks outside of our region! Thanks for watching!
Totally badass information

Great simple idea to help with habitats and insects and don’t need to water the hardy perennials if you choose the seeds correctly
In parts of Canada they call it a Boulevard Garden
I do have the corner lot with the two long parkways and bermuda grass, this is going to be such a project. Heading over to see part 2!

Just take out the sides and sheet mulch the middle and plant in the middle.

Not all grasses are so easy they often can be weedy and not die

Nice dress.
Loved the dress too!
Dang, now I wish my neighborhood had sidewalks so I could do this, but I just have lawn right up to the road :(
Try doing your own strip where the lawn meets the road.
Me too but 1) it’s green weeds, not grass & 2) it’s not MINE.
💚💚💚
My hOA would sue me
Every time I saw you sitting on the grass in the park strip, all I could think about was dog pee. Your dress is lovely, now go and wash it. 😊
😅
America LOL 😅
