  • When Eddie "The Beast" Hall pulled a world record 500kg deadlift, his body experienced a number of dangerous changes including nose and brain bleeds, loss of his vision, and passing out. Eddie recently posted a video taking us behind the scenes of that epic day, revealing just how dangerous and scary that deadlift was for him. In this video I'm going to teach you about the physiology behind his deadlift and what happened to the World's Strongest Man!

    Regarding his eyes changing color:
    Sometimes when your pupils constrict or dilate, it can change the shade of your Iris a bit to make the eye look different colors. With all of the sympathetic surge from eddie I would expect his pupils to dilate here at least initially. Sometimes people say emotions can trigger eye color changes , but tbh I'm not sure how quick that occurs. Most likely it was from pupils dilating/constricting that produced a different color.

    Valsalva? I thought lifters just called it "bracing" or "bracing your abs". I don't get it.. "exhaling against a closed glottis" .. so that means you're not exhaling at all. You can only exhale when the glottis ( which is actually the vocal cords) opens up. I'd like to get more in depth explanation on how exactly this valsalva manoeuvre works. freedivers and scubadivers use valsalva to equalize their ears, but what you describe seems to be something else?

    How is no one wondering how it is possible Hall's eyecolor changed? He clearly stated in the video that his eyes turned turquoise blue. Is it due to the blood at the back of his eye?

    • @gibson1005
      @gibson1005 4 ปีที่แล้ว +163

      blue eyes results from the same effect that make the sky blue, which is length waves absorption by the chemical components inside the eye. One possible explanation is that the sheer force on his eyes changed their shape from spherical-ish to almond shape, changing the way light travels inside the eye, thus the color.

      I don't think that there is a 100% explanation as to why, because this never happened when he lifted 462kg and I'm not sure if 38kg more would be enough to change the colour that drastically but you could say that it's because of the pressure on his body changing the shape of his eyes causing the light to be refracted differently but I'm just going to say it's because he activated his Viking DNA

      This is a little bit of colour theory :)
      So the way we perceive colours is relative to the adjacent colours around it.
      So due to the blood pressure, he burst many capillarys in his eye causing them to go this red colour. Eddie's eyes are there greeny blue colour which is the polar opposite to red. This makes the blue colour stand out more than it would normally on a white background. Due to their not being many blood vessels in the iris it doesn't change colour but the surrounding of the does and this affects our perception of that blue colour.
      If you look up people with pink eye or any other reason for having red eyes, the colour green and blue stand out more :)
      Hope this explains

    • @supernoodles908
      @supernoodles908 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can test this out by cutting out a circle of a green or blue colour and placing it on a white background and then red background. You'll see that you interpret the blue / green as more saturated and brighter

    I think the reason that his lift took such a gigantic toll on him was because he was pushing his body way above the normal human limits. He mentioned he'd been to a psychiatrist to find out how to push his muscles to work as hard as physically possible using the fight or flight response. This, I think, is what made the difference between Eddie's lift and Hafþór's lift. Hafþór has the strength to do it normally but Eddie used mind tricks to push himself.

    Brian, it should also be noted that a lot of it comes down to psychology. I know that Psychology may not be your specific area of expertise (?), but I thought it was worth mentioning anyways.
    Eddie has spoke before about having to go to a "very dark place" where he was not conscious or aware of himself; an "out of body experience" so to speak. A scenario within his mind that gave him the mental capacity to achieve this enormous feat of strength.
    It is quite a phenomenal thing.

    To make that lift Eddie purposely made himself imagine he needed to lift that weight off his kids like in a life treathening scenario. that was to acess 100% of his mucle power so he could make the lift.he never ever liftet mora than 480kg in training so this 500kg was basically an impossible feat but with the crazy mental state he managed to put himself into he made it! he tells all about this on his channel. usually a lifter like him can acess 70% muscle power. in a life/death situation people can acess extreme power and there are many stories how mothers have torn out windows and doors to save their kids. then when an already an hulk like man like Eddie gets into that mode halv a friggen ton fly off the ground. amazing feat ;D
