Most hikes in the Palm Springs area are up and down desert tracks in the foothills. But if you venture a little farther (7.5 miles total) and do the Murray Peak hike, you’ll leave the big crowds behind and get a taste of the raw beauty of the Santa Rosa Mountains. You’ll climb up along a quiet canyon in the shadow of the San Jacintos, crest a ridge with views into the Santa Rosas, and then end at a panoramic viewpoint where you can see the Coachella Valley, San Jacinto, San Gorgonio, and Joshua Tree. It’s one of my favorite peaks and worth a visit.
The summit is officially called Murray Hill, but the unofficial moniker of Murry Peak is more appropriate on this pyramid-shaped dome.

I'm a hiking tour guide in the Palm Springs Area. This is one of the hikes that I offer. I love it, it's my personal favorite & the views throughout it are beautiful & it's a great workout too.

This is my go-to hike. For a while, I was hiking this daily as a means of exercise. I normally start at the rim rock entrance that is next to the Von's shopping center.

Nice, it's a great hike for a regular. And yea, I think the Vons lot is probably the most popular, especially for locals. In the guide I recommend this trailhead just because the parking is more "official" and if they crack down on hikers parking (which occasionally happens), readers won't have a problem. Anyway, hope to see you out there, should be back on these trails once it cools down again. 👍

Cris, I hike up to the top of Murray a couple of years ago, heading up the Araby trail, down to the goat trails and the start of the Clara Burgess approaching Murray from the other side. The CB from that side is a good workout as it is close to 1600 feet of continuous climbing. There are all sorts of trails just back in that area that are nice to hike in. It does get hot once you get past April or so until much later in the year. Feb, March, early April can be perfect.

Nice, that's a good route too, once you pass over the peak on the Araby you can't see civilization for a while and it's awesome. Such a pretty area.

Great hike and scenery. Very different from the terrain here in Indiana.

Ha, yes, I've been to Indiana - this is about 180 from that!

Between 20 to 30 years ago the average cost was $5000 per pinic bench to place them in back country areas. How, I do not know? Good hike, thank you for sharing.

That's crazy, thanks for sharing. And yea, if I had to guess the benches would be hauled up on mules or horseback and assembled, but these look like they are one big square metal frame, so considered the helicopter drop... who knows

@@Hikingguy It's the goverment. I was a volunteer for 5 concurrent years at 100+ hours per year and that is what I was told, back in the late 1990s and right before 911. I speculate it was a helicopter like you say.

As a fellow OC hiker, I enjoy all your videos and detailed information on the website since they are so close to home. I am having trouble finding a map that has all the Palm Springs hiking trails. With all the trails in the area and , I would find it helpful if I had a paper map, especially since your Palm Springs hikes seem to cover multiple trails during each single hike. Are you aware of such a map?

First off, many thanks for watching and I'm glad the guides have been helpful 👍 - So for maps, there might be a Tom Harrison map, but I use this map from the Friends of the Desert Mountains - really good coverage > friends-of-the-desert-mountains.myshopify.com/collections/maps/products/national-monument-map - if you want something more detailed you'd prob just have to print custom quads from CalTopo & Mountyn.co > th-cam.com/video/Ci6D0ATRZW4/w-d-xo.html

Can you camp out at Murray Hill, like at night or if you ran out of daylight?

Good question - not sure but if you did, I'm sure you'd be okay - this is the land manager if you want to confirm > wildlife.ca.gov/Lands/Places-to-Visit/Santa-Rosa-WA
