Finally, someone who knows how to produce! Instead of those Pro Tools fools throwing in a bunch of vst plugins with fancy layouts and turning some knobs because that's what everyone does...
Best audio production tutorial I've seen. Excellent pacing, great demonstration of techniques and the narration uses clear diction in a completely non-annoying voice. Impressive! Ableton would do well to replace their current demo video guy with you. Will watch your other vids. Well done, AK.
Dude! Well done. This is one of the most helpful videos I've watched. And, you don't waste time telling us how wonderful you are or making us sit through a whole production like sooooo many others. Direct, to the point and prepared. Cheers!
This is a fantastic tutorial. Approachable yet advanced enough for those serious about learning. Keep up the good work, I plan on going through the rest of your material.
This was actually a really great video! I consider myself fairly experienced with live but there were lots of great tips and ideas in here. I love the audio follow waveform trick.
Great tips. One bit that expands on #7 is to map the button on the envelope follower to the input knob on the max4live multimap. Let's you sidechain dozens of things to the same source. Also really dope that both map buttons on the env follower and multimap are not exclusive to the channel they're on and can modulate nearly any parameter in live.
That tutorial was AWSOME ! I'am not a bigginer at Ableton , and it's hard to find some advanced and creative tutorial , so cheers to you , that was very inspiring . Keep'em coming ! :)
great video. i like that you go into detail: Tip 11: If you split your Frequency in different Bands, you will hear some change in the tonality (phase cancellation). / in my beginnings i just used to split the signal into highs and lows without looking at the phase. i needed a long time to fix this problem :D
great tut man , been watching your vids all day . thanks for sharing your knowledge one quick note though --- on tip 7 where you use the envelope follower to modulate the EQ , instead of macro mapping the gain parameter for each band, you can just macro map the scale parameter from 0% - 100% (0 being a flat EQ and 100 being a fully affected EQ) . this makes it much easier and quicker to achieve the same result
Wow. This is one of the best Ableton productivity tutorials I've seen on TH-cam. I am very appreciative, however, one thing that would put this over the top is if you saved the tracks corresponding to the examples as .als files and shared them (without audio/midi - just to get the device settings right). Either way, thank you very much for the inspiration.
Appreciate your thoughts, Harris. I didn't save any of the sounds I used in this video, so the project files don't really exist anymore. Honestly I think you'll benefit more from re-creating some of these things on your own rather than just fiddling around with my implementation. There's so much learning that happens when you try to make something from scratch (rather than starting with a preset), and I guess I wanted to make a tutorial that encourages creativity and exploration (not just bass growls). If you need a bit more info about any of these tips, definitely let me know and I'm happy to explain the concepts further. Thanks for watching and for the praise dude!
I hybridized 3 of your tips into a pretty cool new one: I did the instamix trick with just a vocal sample (used melodyne to ensure that it was all in key), then added a Chord MIDI effect, and the 3 LFOs trick, except I used 6 LFOs all set on random to control the 6 dials of the Chord. This keeps randomly layering 1-6 different parts of the vocal chops.
Nice tips man. Not quite at that level just yet but some of the tips resonate well with me especially being a techie and liking to get my ideas down keeping efficiency in mind. Cheers,
Trust me the Eq overlap problem when you separate out the frequencies, I've been tryna find solutions since ages!never thought of a much better use of phase cancellation man!
Great video man. I knew 70-80% of this already, but it jogged a few ideas in my own production skills anyway, and gave me some faster ways of doing things Nice one, be keen to watch another one of a higher caliber if you got it =)
My entire ableton series (hopefully) pretty useful. aktunes.com/TH-cam And check out my playlists. And if you like this stuff, share with your friends.
+justlive4themoment I don't really do genre videos, though I do have a whole series where I'm just producing bass music; here's the best way to see what I have: th-cam.com/users/TheJimmystewertplaylists?view=1&sort=dd I also have a video on massive you might sound useful for making squishy basses: th-cam.com/video/X_NCVadwKjA/w-d-xo.html
I never knew you can choose "Resample" in an audio channel input . i always had to look for the channel i wanted to record.... This is brilliant ! Thank u ! and i'm only at the 3'rd tip lol ^
Another way to get a good high-low split is just use the Multiband Dynamics plug in, turn off the high chain, and then use the low/mid split control to choose your crossover point. I've never compared them side by to side to see if one is cleaner, but that's what I've been doing lately and it seems to work really well. It helps if you prebuild and macro map a 3 band splitter rack similar to how Mr. Bill explains in one of his tutorial videos.
Really appreciate this! Honestly I'm overwhelmed at the positive response to this video. I'm going to do a whole series on little tips and tricks and stuff, because it seems like there's some demand for tutorials that aren't just "how to make bass that sounds like blahblah" Anyway, I'm doing this to advance my music; if you really want to support me, just listen :) soundcloud.com/welcome-to-maschine akpenguin.bandcamp.com facebook.com/AKpenguin
I'm new to ableton. How do you do a mass zoom in where u just see the color bars of the loops. I don't know what to call it, but it's when everything is made smaller and instead of going it one by one (Making it smaller to the point where just the color bar of the loop is showing). there's a way to group them all together if u have like 10,15 or 20 audio or midi loops, so you make the whole arrangement window into bars of the loops. I hope i'm making myself perfectly clear. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.
Dude thanks allot !!! really amazing stuff , loved it . can you share some videos on creating some of the audio FX u used and the EQ device ? How can set a key command to cut based on grid size ( like you showed )?
These tips seem great. As an Ableton beginner, are there any beginner videos/channels you can recommend? I really like how you use practical examples. Thank for any info.
cheers man figured it out after a few minutes, any more workflow vids coming up matey? have u got the push two would love some of your insights on that
Download install: www.keyboardmaestro.com/main/ and create a Macro something like this: www.dropbox.com/s/tzynyjxe3ggrg2g/Screenshot%202014-11-30%2010.31.20.png?dl=0 or whatever repetitive keyboard pattern you want.... keyboard maestro does have a 'record' feature which is kind of cool.
grab a program like keyboard maestro (OSX) or auto-hot key (WIN); these programs let you 'record' macros, play them back, and loop them. so take any repetitive task, 'record it', loop it, and then you can map that macro to a single shortcut key to preform the task quickly; in the example I recorded a macro for 'press cmd+e (clip split) then the right arrow 16 times in a row' ... so I don't have to do that manually
Great video! I have one question though regarding Tip 19: When you have an eq that boosts a certain frequency let's say by 4db, and you duplicate that eq. Couldn't you achieve the same effect by just using one eq that boosts the frequency by 8db instead of 4? So twice as much? Or am I getting something wrong here? X)
+Jay Steph you are ABSOLUTELY correct. there is no real value to 'stacking' EQs (unless the 32db of gain is not enough). However, other devices, like compressors, saturators, distortion units, etc... can give you better mileage when stacking and using lower dry wet values try stacking two saturators on medium curve with a dry/wet of 20% and compare it to a single one with 40% dry wet.

Been using Ableton for afew years as my primary DAW ....learned afew new tricks to try. Great vid.
long time listener, first time caller. I appreciate what you/ve done her
This is one of the most useful videos I've ever found on the tube. Thanks man. Your hot keys are something else!
Finally, someone who knows how to produce! Instead of those Pro Tools fools throwing in a bunch of vst plugins with fancy layouts and turning some knobs because that's what everyone does...
I'm flattered.. I don't really know how to produce any more than the next guy... Just figuring stuff out as I go!
+1 man!
This is dope you did a great job of sticking to the most useful ones and not just listing all the basic tips
Best audio production tutorial I've seen. Excellent pacing, great demonstration of techniques and the narration uses clear diction in a completely non-annoying voice. Impressive! Ableton would do well to replace their current demo video guy with you. Will watch your other vids. Well done, AK.

This is a fantastic tutorial. Approachable yet advanced enough for those serious about learning. Keep up the good work, I plan on going through the rest of your material.
One of the best value for productions tips in terms of time. Thanks man!
I've been using Live since 2006 and I still find many new things! NICEE!!!
This is the best ableton live 9 video on the internet, goddamn.
+Simon Gjölmesli got better in the works. Stay tuned.
Really enjoyed this! Lots of cool information, specially in the sampling parts. Its always cool to have another perspective on things. Thanks
This was actually a really great video! I consider myself fairly experienced with live but there were lots of great tips and ideas in here. I love the audio follow waveform trick.
When I'm uninspired, I just turn on audio follow and watch for a while until I figure out what I want to do
Fantastic tips! Tons of little gems I didn't know about.
Great tips. One bit that expands on #7 is to map the button on the envelope follower to the input knob on the max4live multimap. Let's you sidechain dozens of things to the same source. ***** this is a good point. my tips are usually ways of augmenting your workflow... or just some cool things to think about :)
Lots of happy accident type stuff here. Great for beginners or non creative types, thanks!

So useful and an excellent pace so my ADD didn't kick in and force me to skip.
This is next level knowledge. Thanks for making.
100 likes! alright team!
you just earned another tips video: 10 Workflow Tips for Ableton Live Session Mode
great tut man , been watching your vids all day . thanks for sharing your knowledge
one quick note though ---
on tip 7 where you use the envelope follower to modulate the EQ , instead of macro mapping the gain parameter for each band, you can just macro map the scale parameter from 0% - 100% (0 being a flat EQ and 100 being a fully affected EQ) . this makes it much easier and quicker to achieve the same result
+HØUNDS agreed; discovered that a while ago and now I only ever use scale to make reactive EQ fx
Glad you find me. aktunes.com if you want to collab!
this is the best tutorial ive ever seen
By the way, there's a table of contents in the description.... if 26 minutes is too much for the attention span to handle... just hit show more.
very nice insights from this :)

Haters gotta hate.
Maybe they were mad they didn't think to do this first.
Dude thanks allot !!! really amazing stuff , loved it .
can you share some videos on creating some of the audio FX u used and the EQ device ?
How can set a key command to cut based on grid size ( like you showed )?
Check out my channel. I go through these techniques in depth:
aktunes.com/youtube
A good idea on that Phase Split might be adding another utility at the end of your low EQ cuts and make them mono. No reason for stereo down there.
+Jim Walker good point
with the EQ modulation, don't forget about the Scale slider on the eq.. not perfect, but a quick solution to fade in and out eq's.
+alex kay I love that scale thing! Use it all the time... try a reactive envelope on it
very cool and inspiring! thanx a lot
Awesome video! Any chance you could explain how to setup Tip #8, or point me in a direction of how to? Looks very useful! Thanks!

Press 0 with clip selected
cheers man figured it out after a few minutes, any more workflow vids coming up matey? have u got the push two would love some of your insights on that
yea... i'm always working on something ;)
Many thanks for the video mate!

Great video man thanks
what plugin did u use for the effects?
Awesome man, thx for this =D
Hey buddy, in tip 5, I got really excited, but the record arm setting doesn't seem to take... Maybe the new version of live killed it's own self :'(
awesome man!
IT IS THE BEST!
really amazing stuff..... :)
If you like this one, I've done a number of others in similar fashion
Check out my channel: aktunes.com/youtube

Great tips! Thank!
Nice video man
nice creative tips thanks
Could you explain how to do #8 a little more?
grab a program like keyboard maestro (OSX) or auto-hot key (WIN); these programs let you 'record' macros, play them back, and loop them.
so take any repetitive task, 'record it', loop it, and then you can map that macro to a single shortcut key to preform the task quickly; in the example I recorded a macro for 'press cmd+e (clip split) then the right arrow 16 times in a row' ... so I don't have to do that manually

I don't understand what the purpose of this is @ 4:18 ?
It's easier to mute everything and bring in clips one by one than to explicitly mute multiple clips individually on each beat.
(Less mouse clicks)
Nice tricks, but doubling the eq is a weird thing to do. It would only be necessary if the 30dB or the slopes wouldn't be enough for you. Just use the scale and set it to 200%.

Can you tell me how to curve a line, position perfecly a point on the grid , all the buttons i have to press for do anything?
draw some automation. hold alt. click between any two points and you can draw a curve. if you press 'b' your cursor turns into a pencil and then when you draw automation it snaps to the grid.
