    Over Christmas break in '86-'87, I played this game for 14 hours in one day. I'm amazed the old C=64 didn't catch fire.

    Thank you so much for putting this Gunship vid on You Tube. I was 12 years old when my dad bought me GUNSHIP. It was my all time favorite game of all the games I had and it brings back so many memories. A friend and I both loved it and used to challenge each other to various missions. I used to ponder back then (more than 23 years ago) what graphics might be like in the future. I used to dream of today's 'smooth' flowing high detail graphics as a possible reality... But we really had to use...

    Loved this game. Played it for hours. Finally ended up a full Colonel with every medal and campaign ribbon. Happy hours :)

      Wow! The CMOH seems impossible to get. I got a DSC though. I bow to you sir.

      @@lewstone5430 Thank you. You called me sir. What rank did you achieve? LOL :)
      I remember that two of the regions highest levels were 'Extreme' risk/danger, and the other two were 'Ultimate'. So it must have been on one of the 'Ultimate' missions that I got the CMOH and probably by blowing the daylights out of everything. I do remember getting it before the DSC or the Purple Heart and before reaching full Colonel.
      Another memory from the game was being chased by a Hind and out of both cannon and sidewinders. I went flat-out, did a fast turn, raised the nose when I saw the Hind and with only FFARs left; I fired two (remember they used fire as pairs?) at more-or-less point blank range and blow it to bits! Yee-haw! :)

    I used to play Gunship all the time in the late 80's and early 90's. Sold my C64 in the early 90's. Just got another one a few months ago and just bought a copy of Gunship yesterday. I miss playing it. It was fun.
    I had one pilot, KIA, a Captain, with 4 PH's, 1 CMOH and a few other sorted awards. Flew 8 missions before getting killed, received a DFC posthumously.
    I love this game

    I had a friend whom was in the military with me, whom had a part time job in a game store....of course illegally. He GAVE me a complete new copy of this game ( as well as a bunch of other games) for my C64. Never asked for one red cent, neither ! I spent alot of time playing it....especially when I retired from military service. Thanks for posting this.

    Same here. Not to toot my own horn, but I got rather good at this game as well. Became an expert on how to crash land without problems, usually rather soft landings too, when I did. Awesome game. :) Another good military game for the C64 that was quite nice was Red Storm Rising.

    Got to remember that up until this point all we had was defender, space invaders and pac man and all at a quarter per shot for a few minutes game time. This was revolutionary, land the chopper, auto rotate and live? Wow,.. the memories.. I had all the best titles, silent service, airborne ranger, this, and who can forget the last ninja.. all super addictive and fun games.

    I remember "playing" this "game" in the 80s when I was like 12-13 years old. Honestly, I only enjoyed watching the intro and hoping that I would be like an arcade game with that cool helicopter and not the fine simulator it was. Anyway, back in those days those were the cool games young adults like my uncle (how was +30) would play.

    This thing was amazing back in the day. It might not look it at first but all those gauges and lights actually work, physics, even the cannon had recoil. You might have to fight losing your rotor. I still don't know how they packed all that into 64K.

    Its graphics may not have been much, even at the time but just think about this: it was the ultimate roleplaying game!
    I remember a dogfight up against a Russian Hind over Europe, it was flying circles around me but I kept pounding it with my 30 mm chaingun. The Hind was just two triangles put together but still it was a desperate fight.
    "You abandoned your craft behind enemy lines while being seriously wounded.
    In the chaos of war, you completely disappear. You're missing in action (MIA)."

    Remember playing this sim. Sooo much had to buy another one because the floppy got worn out. Plus, if you played it on the 128 the flack were totally very fierce, and the Hinds got smarter each time you shot one down, another one knew where you were, but also came in a different direction, faster, and could turn very fast.

    ... our imagination back then. The fact was (as you know) computers just could not handle the pace of our imagination... These days, it's the other way around perhaps. I also (for reference) remember taking a trip to a local weather station. The guy on the tour showed us their computer (it was the size of two fridges). He stood proudly beside it and said to us "This has TWO GIGABYTES" of memory....

    @vintagemanV Believe me, anyone who uploads this game after so long definitely has passion for it, and I have no doubt you have flying skills to match. Flying that machine was crazy while under fire. Of all the vintage games I think Gunship would kick the butt of the modern gamer the worst.

    Haha, 25 minutes to load a game. I remember it well. One of my favourite games of all time. I used to skive off school pretending i was sick so i could play it. Took me a LONG time to win the Congressional Medal of Honor on Ultimate settings.

    I kicked so much ass at this game, it was unreal. Hours and hours of playing! I forget my highest rank, but it was up there, like a Colonel or something. I could take out most targets on high difficulty with my machine gun and FFAR missles. The trick was getting in close to the tanks at low altitude, where they could hit you as well. Hinds were taken out if you fly low, hide behind a mountain and wait for them to come around the corner & blast'em up close. Loved this game! :-D

  • @vintagemanV
    @vintagemanV  15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks :))
    If I remember right, it was the only "full" simulator of combat helicopter on C=64.
    There are TOMAHAWK from DiD but I did not like it cause I found it too close to Fighter pilot ....
    Anyway, it's MicroProse, champions of the simulation at this old time ;)

    The accompanying manual, together with friendly and enemy vehicles and tanks was so good, I got most of my military hardware info from this great booklet.
    BTR-60: if the USSR had a congress it would long ago dismissed this monstrosity. DIVAD ("Sergeant York"): fortunately US congress did shoot down this turkey after millions had been wasted.
    Merkava Tank (Israel): an innovative if strange, design. It is slow and heavily armoured, contradicting both NATO's and Warsaw Pact's speed doctrine.

    Some more sound advice: always carry at least a pair of Sidewinders when flying in Europe against 1st line troops.
    In Gunship 2000 of course they had them replaced with Stingers which were shorter ranged but you could carry twice the load compared to Sidewinders.
    Better advice: stay low low low and take out any target with the trusty 30 mm chaingun. When in doubt, get the hell out with all jammers on and flares flying. And don't forget evasive maneuvering AWAY from the target.

    This sim i played till unconsciousness. It also cause me to learn sid-assembler, to understand the copy protection scheme, after the datasette messed the tape up and had to buy a new cassette. Finally, i was able to copy to an Akai HiFi VHS videorecorder, with all covers opened up. What a mess. Hail to MicroProse!

    Don't think you're the only one who made Colonel with the MOH, DSM, SS, BSV, ACM, NDS medal and all campaign medals with accompanying AMs, of course one or two PHs.
    Truth be told, you got a campaign medal after flying only three missions, the Air Medal for another three. But flying on Ultimate settings in either Europe or the Middle East still was tricky business.
    I played this game for so long and late into the nights that I developed computer combat fatigue :-D

    It looks primative now but at the time Wow! I spent hours on this. It seemed so real and smooth at the time. I think it was on a tape and I used an action replay cart and put it on a floppy. Those where the days......

  • @AudieHolland
    @AudieHolland 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The C64 did have a disk drive, for those who could afford it.
    ...which was about twice as slow as the tapedeck. Or at least it felt like that.

  • @AudieHolland
    @AudieHolland 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    THAT's why you only get an Army Commendation Medal, even with both the Primary and Secondary Targets annihilated while other enemies took moderate casualties.
    If this was actually played at Hard level, I'd think you would have received a BSV or SS and some nice damage compliments of the Warsaw Pact's AAA.

    Well, heh, anyone being addicted to this game became 'rather good at it' no doubt.
    I remember taking out the enemy HQ in Western Europe, using up all my ammo, then getting the hell out at full power and about knee-high altitude, being shot at by T-74s machineguns! They couldn't hurt me and I was flying too low and fast to hit them, but talk about an adrenalin rush.
    Of course, I got the MOH that time.
    But one other time I was really sleepy, shot up my own troops and was down to peeling potatoes.

    Hi AudieHolland,
    I already answered this question.
    I wanted to play as I played on my C64 (or Amiga for others videos) but with emulator that's impossible.

    The purpose of the video is not to show that I'm the best but just recall good memories. ;o)

    It was the time when hobbyists were making games for hobbyists.
    Bill Stealey was a fighter pilot, it had to play for realism.
    The evidence is that their last simulator Falcon 4.0 is from 1999 and is still the most compet today's.
    When MICROPROSE died, the world of simulation has lost something.

    Hi,
    You're right, I've made this video in flight simplified and I'll tell you why.
    All my videos are made because I still have the original game and the machine home.
    I'm a fan of flight simulation since my Commodore 64.
    The video was made with an emulator and I've wanted to play like I play with my C64.
    Unfortunately, with the PC joysticks of today, it was impossible to handle the keyboard too.
    Let me explain, in realistic mode the joystick responded late....

  • @vintagemanV

    Hi NeilRoy65
    I must be honest, when I made this video, I wanted to do as I played on my Commodore 64 but with one emulator and joystick from now it was impossible.
    So,the video was made in easy mode.
    Options such as video was already made (not the courage to start all over again), I left it, that's why you see hard difficulty.

    Now, you contradicted yourself. At the time Gunship came out, we already had Silent Service. From the same company of course but don't say we had nothing that approached Gunship's realism.
    I'll say this: even though I loved playing Project: Stealth Fighter, it was a bit easier than Gunship. No flying into hills and as long as you turned on your jammers in time, nothing could hit you. Even enemy fighters would not use their cannon in broad daylight. They'd simply fly through you and then: Blam!

  • @vintagemanV

    @Doeff8
    Ho yes, I can immagine when I see Falcon 4.0, the last "baby"from Microprose, which dates from 1998 and is still "alive".
    No simulator has yet been able to dethrone it.
    Today, may be A-10C that can compete with avionic but for the dynamics campaign,there are still a long way.
    To believe that today, it's one or the other, Falcon had both with a less powerful PC.

    • @blacbraun
      @blacbraun 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Falcon was "Microprose" only because of corporate buyouts etc so it was MP only in name. Gunship is from the real Microprose which was in it's prime in the 80's.

  • @AudieHolland
    @AudieHolland 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I take it English was not your native language at the time? Because the "quick take-off" (easy setting) is quite straightforward.
    Turn on both engines (press 1, 2), engage the rotor (press 3) max up on the collective (press F1 till the collective bar fills completely) and presto, you're airborne. Don't forget pressing forward on the stick a bit and decreasing the collective with a few F7s and one or two F5s or else you're up in the clouds and on everyone's threat indicator.
    Silent Service was OK

  • @AudieHolland
    @AudieHolland 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I doubt it. If you were able to hit targets at 11 km distance, you'd be exposed to all enemy anti air plus the odd Hind thrown in. You would have been shot down before your own Hellfires even hit their targets.
    Real veteran players just use the 30 mm cannon and never go above 50 feet. At least in Europe.
    What was so realistic about this game was the Hellfires could be jammed but if you fired them 'blind' at the target then locked on just before it reached it, it still had a good chance to hit.

    Duh, that's because it's actually easier to lock onto all those armoured targets in Europe.
    Fighting in South East Asia was demanding in a different way: couldn't carry too much stuff because of moist and heat, I practised firing pairs of FFAR missiles while carrying only half a load of 30 mm.
    Never cut down on fuel in South East Asia. Never.
    And it's not exactly good for morale trying to land at a base after a mission, getting fired at by sneaky VC troops at your own base's doorstep!

    Gimmie a break I was only a kid. I did try quite hard to get the bird in the sky but it would just make a duuuuurrwip noise. Forgive me ::(

    Nope, the actual difficulty is Moderate.
    Check 01:49. G-2's expectations are the same as the actual mission difficulty.

    I was 6 when I got the amstrad, I had the manual but as I said I was probably about 7 or 8 when I played it. I was better at f16 strike eagle and silent service. Silent service was my thing really. Oh and Dizzy.
