The way it should be. His stuff always sounds a little off with regular playing. I'm more of a guitarist but been trying to get this down with the one finger technique.
Antonio Usai the sponge mutes the strings to better emulate the muted tone that James Jamerson had. Jamerson played on flatwound strings and never changed/cleaned his strings, so they had a more dead, thumpy sound to them.
Took me 3/4 years to learn this song, and I had been playing bass for 7 years... That goes to show how much mastery Jamerson had shown in his bass lines, and how groundbreaking he was in the role of the bass guitar.
@@LemonPoIIock Well, I would do small sections at a time (1-2 bars), and spend an hour trying to perfect the syncopation, and memorise it on each section. Yes, I could learn it in a few hours, but I would not be comfortable playing it. Plus, I was not determined to learn as fast as possible. I took my time doing it, Darling Dear by Jackson 5 like that too. It took me a while to get most of it, although I am still haven't finished learning the song yet.
@@LemonPoIIock I've been playing for two and have been having a super hard time with the choruses on this song. Borderline making me want to quit altogether LOL, some people just ain't cut out for music or just learn at different paces.
I've only been playing for 2 lonths and am only 40s into the video haha. The amount that I'm learning about how to harmonize with a key/chord has added to every genre I play with my band mates and they have already noticed. James is a masterclass on how to groove with technical finesse and wow with just one finger and a beat. I forwent all slap and tone shaping when I found him so I could focus on his lessons.
There are two things that I like with your channel: (1) the guitar chords and bass tabs; (2) the fact that you are accompanying the song (with vocals & entire band) with the bass guitar. Other channels mute the vocals, or just isolated bass. Keep it up. Pure talent.
I got my bass a couple of weeks ago, but I’ve played drums for 5 years, so I’ve had musical experience. This is the first song I wanted to learn and now I know almost all of it so thanks
@@galaxyblitzy9229 23. I regret not starting at 14, feel like I'm never gonna be able to get good enough to make anything worth listening to. With this song the part that constantly trips me up at full speed is the key change; I can play up through the bridge until the key change and then I start making mistakes because my hands still want to use the open strings on the ascending chromatic bits.
I bought my bass about two months ago and I am now trying my hand at this. It's been three days and I now know how to play the verses and the first two choruses and I have an idea of how the bridge should go! So far I love playing it and this video has been soooo helpful!
I've been playing a year and a half and this is deceptively tricky. I'm trying to learn this and ABBA's Dancing Queen which is actually hard. I keep hoping @CoverSolutions will do Sister Sledge Thinking of You.
ive been playing for 5 months already and I've also tried this bass line but for some reason i still suck :( , guess ill practice harder (my wrists hurt a lot tho )
MrBuda watch some videos on proper technique your wrist shouldn’t be hurting that badly unless something is already wrong with it in which case you may need to adjust your technique which it sounds like you need to do anyway. Make sure the neck is up high enough for starters and not lateral with the bass body and floor, your bass should sit at an angle whether in your lap or standing.
@@Iofflight78 i will look into it ,but in general it has always hurt to some degree , maybe i should go to the doctor , ironically the pain started when i started picking up the bass more , i wouldn't say i have the worst posture but i do think that my early days probably affected my wrist from the fact that i didn't knew anything about bass postures and the effects etc.
Came here to learn this song(newbie) only to end up crying a little bit right after the bridge. Made me miss my son whom we had to leave in our home country, while working abroad so we could provide for him a lot better and afford his medical treatment. Miss you anak this one’s for you❤
IMO this is one of the greatest songs of all time. Thanks for posting this. Is it just me or does this song NEVER land on the I chord, no matter what key they're in? It seems like they always elide to the vi chord, unless it's IN minor! Or, they'll use the ii or the IV instead. Those coupled with the super dramatic hanging half-diminished chord at the beginning, It gives the song this powerful, unresolved feeling. It keeps sounding like it's getting there (IV chord), then falling back to trying to get there (half diminished), etc. That extremely active bass line really helps underline, build and support this tension. It's like no other song I've ever heard. Major kudos to Ashford, Simpson and Jamerson!
One of the first big songs I ever learned. Great cover. Would love to see you do more Jamerson, maybe Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day by Stevie Wonder. Always wanted to learn that one. Thanks!
Note for note ….Nailed it! It tickles me when people think that there’s some other person that plays like, or is as good as, James Jamerson. You may think you heard bass performances on this level. Till I ask “Who? Name one person since 1959 that is not a jazz musician that played bass on this level?” Don’t embarrass yourself. No bass player in the world ever said “I’m better than James.” They dare not. He’s the genuine absolute G.O.A.T. Of the electric bass. Listen to the melody he generates (from a bass?). Sorry. the bass line is basically jazz bass over a totally pop chorus...the dichotomy between the two styles is what makes 1) Jamerson such a genius on bass and 2) why the chorus bass "pops" so hard and sounds amazing...even to people who have no idea what's going on musically.
Jeez!! THANK YOU! I've been working on this about an hour a day for 3 days and I could not for the life of me figure out the transition from the first main pattern into the 2-012 part of the song. Jamerson used one finger, i just did it so the execution look more faithful to the original. I think it helps getting more constant dynamics and it's really part of the sound too. You can play it however you want to
I know jamerson didn't like that much electric bass, but he liked upright bass, maybe that's to emulate upright bass playstyle in which you often use only the index backened with the middle finger. I'm not sure about that at all tho
Chromaticism can be used in any style of music; it just takes a creative bassist to figure out how it can be applied. Who would've ever thought chromatic runs would sound good in punk until Matt Freeman came along?

This is why Jamerson was nicknamed " the hook".
I really appreciate you notating the chords over the line. It's so helpful to see how the line relates to the chord progression.
