- Big Mick Hughes is one of the most famous sound guys, not only due to his impressive appearance. For more than 20 years he's responsible for the FoH sound of one of the most successful bands on the planet: Metallica.
We talked to him about PA systems, consoles, analog outboard and what has changed in realising 360° shows since the nineties.
The interview was shot shortly before a lecture which Big Mick did in cooperation with Meyer Sound at Oxford Brookes University.

Well! I had the distinct fortune to work in immediate proximity to this dude when I was local crew here in Perth, Western Australia. Obviously, I was on the sound team and we were packing down FOH. He is exactly as he appears in this KILLER vid: Good humoured and authentic. Over the years, I've recalled the occasion. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to share a laugh and few questions, point blank with "Big Mick".
J Stone agreed, Metallica picked a real smart cookie when they picked this guy to hang their sound on.

Had a college friend that knew Big Mick in the late 80's. Lovely bloke and sorted us out passes for Guns N Roses and Metallica at the time (87/88) I will forever be thankful for those moments
Big Mick has been a hero of mine for many years. I'm not really into Metallica, but I am into what Mick brings to the table.
I worked for Big Mick in KC he was the coolest gentlemen ever , even after we dropped a giant cable on his head he was just like it's alright mate carry on , it's good to see him .

What a fantastic interview, the experience and knowledge this guy has is beyond value. I remember becoming aware of "Big Mick" as a young budding engineer via a Behringer ad in Sound on Sound magazine. I could only dream of having this kind of coverage back then!!

I remember that night with The Armory Show and Pete Mensch, it was me who rode the Z1300 home to my mothers in the snow at midnight, both feet down over the junc 7 bypass cos it was icy as shit... It was kind of payback for busting that headlight :)

This guy is so correct! An audio engineer drives the box truck with a lift gate, rolls in the amps, speakers, power, mics, snake, board all so he can use the his mixing board for two hours and then you take it all apart until 4 am!

Very interesting stuff. I personally much preferred Metallicas live sound in the 90s to how things are now, interesting to learn a lot of it is down to the PA not being pushed so aggressively.
+GoCotton i dont like the live guitar sounds anymore but they have to tune everything down because james voice is dead
his range has gone down because of his age, it's a natural thing, many bands do that. however his singing abilities are higher than ever. just because he can't sing as high as before doesn't mean his voice 'is dead'. listen to his acoustic performances (cure for cancer concert or something like that), he sings great there
GoCotton I would argue that James's voice sounds more balanced now than it has in at least 15 years, there is a little more aggression and attack in it again than there was around the year 2000. Maybe with age he has gotten a little more confident since he hasn't blown his voice out in quite a long time now.

I have been to 3 metallica shows and i always set myself next to the sound/light tent so i have always seen big mick and heard the loudest and clearest sound ever, this guy is mental mate in a good way, you need ear plugs to not go deaf jajaja
on the " and Justice for all" tour in Knoxville Tenn. i was a 15 year old runaway from NC i was outside of the arena with some other kid i had met we were listening to the show, wishing we could go in... and no shit, this big ass dude with a long beard came by and asked us what we were doing. we told him we didn't have tickets to go inside. he told us to follow him. he took us through the back door, and we got to watch the show for free!! after the. show the same kid and i were just walking around and the same big dude with the long beard screamed at us from across the almost empty arena and told us to " get over here" he asked us what the hell were we still doing there and told us to follow him. he led us to the backstage area and then into Metallica 's back stage party where we just hung out for a couple of hours with the band and a bunch of hit chick's. never new his full name till now just big milk. anyone know how to get in touch with him?? PLEASE HELP!!
Very interesting interview. I would like to hear more about the tours tid bits stuff that has never been said in other interviews of people in the Metallica camp.
This is so true. Sound does matter. EQ matters. Volume matters even more. If one guitar is just a bit louder than the other guitar. Than the drums,bass ,vocals all suffer as well, it's the small things. It's that sweet spot like he was mentioning. It's TRUE
The one thing I dread, but still love doing is building the cones. We got stuck in a rain storm for a outside gig and half the subs rip apart

He's not kidding about Meyer boxes being heavy. I've got two UPQ-1P boxes that weigh 110 lbs each. They're easily the heaviest speaker boxes I have. Nothing else weighs that much in my backline, which is very limited since I only provide sound for a small college. Yet somehow we have two Meyer UPQ-1P boxes, which cost $10K a piece.
That's so cool man. I got into doing sound later in life. Sheer coincidence that a friend told the local bar owner that I was highly technical and they just fired their last sound guy. I already knew how to hook up sound gear, as I roadied for a KJ, and had a general understanding of how mixers work, and background as a trumpet player when I was a kid. Before the first show, I had two days to learn a Behringer X32 console. I've been doing it for over a year and I'm hooked. I'll be 47 this year, but I hope to land a gig touring. No kids, no wife, nothing to anchor me down in my mid-life. If I got the same kind of offer and had to leave immediately, I'd go in a heartbeat.

I'm a musician but I don't understand a lot about the properties of sound in a live environment, in terms of how to combat certain problems/frequencies etc, but this interview was fantastic. Big Mick has got such enthusiasm it is infectious. Great interview. I have a question though if Mick ever reads this: Metallica. Sheffield City Hall. 30th Sept 1988. Justice tour. What happened with the PA? lol. One of the best gigs I've ever been to, however, throughout the gig, the PA seemed to be having problems with the right hand stack. Sometimes it would be working, sometimes it seemed to be barely audible. During the performance of "One", the right side seemed to fade out, come back for a few second, then get loud, then the entire PA just fizzles out and all you can hear is Lars' drumming, as that is the only acoustic instrument in the room. Hence, the end of "One" was a solo drum performance. Then followed about 10 minutes of silence, and eventually, the PA was working again. What went wrong? Don't get me wrong, it kinda "made" the gig, cos it was a fucking riot. Metallica. Sheffield City Hall. No barriers between stage and fans. Seriously. No barriers. I was right up against the stage and Hetfield was about a metre away, with Jason to my left. Serious stagediving went on that night! What were they thinking? But, yeah, would love to know what went wrong with the PA.

I have a personal rule of never getting a sound engineer talking about his work, especially if he's drinking. But I'm going to ammend that rule with 'unless it's Metallica's engineer.'

I get the agression thing! So many shitty budget modern PAs driven to near destruction have that horrific sound to them... it's like bad digital clipping is to tube overdrive... unlike the PA's back then, the sound just gets mangled to hell!

really interesting but I went to Death magnetic at the o2 up in the gods and it was fucking awful. Because the sound was hitting us then the wall/ceiling 20-30ft behind and bouncing back. I could barely make out what I was listening to most of the time

Really interesting. I must say, seeing Metallica at Lollapalooza in '96 the show I was at the sound was a horrible mushy mess.
Because at those shows, Metallica has little to no input on anything. They have talked about this sort of thing numerous times. Think, "First time they played on a TV show and how the band hated it.. Which was Enter Sandman on a late night talk show in the early 90's. Or, if your more inclined, Nirvana when Kirk Cobain refused to play to a backing track for the first time on MTV. Even though they did MTV Unplugged. There is always a battle between the band and overly produced TV or Lollapalooza type crap. Metallica even being at Lollapalooza in itself pissed off a lot of actual Metallica fans because, we always knew them to be the band that did stuff their own way.

An amazing engineer, I had a privilege to work on their gig in South Africa a few years ago, I am not a fan of Metallica neither Heavy Metal music but the mix was brilliant.
he CLEARLY stated that the only metal he knew was what Americans called the new wave of british metal.

Before I toot my horn on how bad the sound was at the 1994 or 95 Metallica's Black album tour in Phoenix AZ. at the new PHX Suns arena. He admitted to how bad they sounded back then. I take back all the bad shit I talked about for years about that unforgivable sound of what sounded like all the drivers in the right side line array was being driven too hard and was coming apart. Thank you for clarifying the problem at hand. I do miss the old days of a giant left and right WALL 🧱 of drivers playing as loud as hell and going home after the show not able to hear a damn thing. Lol
