I am a huntsman from the north of ireland from the same tradition as the men who wrote this song. This song is dear to us. This version is the only version true to the traditional version. If you want to hear it sang in the traditional sean nos style listen to Patsy Flynns version on the cd The Hardy Sons of Dan

If you want to hear this sung and played as no other can you must hear Al O Donnell doing it... his version is quite extraordinary , it is unsurpassable

@thewhitey360 The tuning is CGCGCD from 6 through to 1. Sometimes called Orkney tuning. Nic Jones used it a lot.

The 'Coyle' mentioned twice is my grand-uncle.

(if we're talking about Simpson): ah - well, i'd heard about him back then (ish) or at least when i was about 18 or 19 and a regular at the rocking horse folk club; but never actually seen him... but when i took his Cool And Unusual from the record library here in my town in Finland, i was kinda blown away by it...
(if Carthy): well, i opened for him at the rocking horse once, for a Nic Jones benefit gig and - again - i was blown away... but yeh, i see what you mean.

    lmao-i like you message
by simply existing martin simpson managed to make me practise guitar about 4 hours a day for the last 18 months. i just learnt it note for note, but i see now itd be so much better if i create my own style, rather than simply mimicing his. thanks. :-)

@ianLP59 Orkney tuning is actually CGDGCD from 6 through to 1.
CGCGCD is usually referred to as Csus2 , or C modal tuning...

Good version , as one would expect of M S I have heard many people perform versions of this song including Steeleye on their first album with Terry Woods on vocals , which was a different but very effective rendition of this fine song.

The best version you will ever hear of this song and with stunning guitar accompanyment is by Al O Donnell

he has me feeling i should give up. if it weren't for my own audience in this shitty little town in finland, i would give up.

cheers, man ... not sure how good i am, really, but - yeh, in this sort of thing the only valid comparison is ipsative: that way you can see how far you've moved on. sometimes, it's hard to discover that area that you _can_ be considered to be masterful in... my picking style (certainly when i'm playing the guitar tuned to CGCGCC) is very much a percussive style, akin to Martin Carthy's... otherwise, it's nothing spectacular.

Ruined. Al O'donnell sang it from the heart. This is at best a hash of blues. I wish people would write their own material instead of trampling on the finest of songs,or at the very least have the grace to leave the finest to the finest.
