CORRECTION from a viewer: The glacier seen after going through Ptarmigan Tunnel is actually Old Sun Glacier. That huge mountain it clings to is Mt. Merritt, one of the six 10,000+ foot peaks in the park. Ahern Glacier is a little southwest and you can’t see it from the tunnel.

I did this same hike in 1974 with two military buds. We were backpacking and planned to stay two nights at Iceberg Lake. It was so beautiful we stayed two more nights. We climbed one of those mountains until we got so high we got scared with no ropes. It is an experience I’ll remember the rest of my life. A few years later my son and I did and overnight at Cobalt Lake, which I would highly recommend. Love GNP!!!! Don’t forget to go on the Canadian side, which is Waterton Lakes. Also amazing

Another classic GNP hike, thanks for taking us along! On our day hike for the tunnel, the rangers closed the trail minutes before we got to the trailhead because of a Mr. Griz 🐻 sighting. Had to find another hike in the park and we missed this one. Wamp wamp. Such a magical and majestic view from the balcony. Speaking of the CCC, my father served 9 months during 1935 doing various projects for the government that we all enjoy the fruits of to this day. And yes, it’s best to take your time and not hike fast in these parks; take it all in and savor…

Been to these places a few times as 5 times at GNP as well. And been to many many other NP's and Glacier is the best. The BlackFeet museum in Browning is first class.

Love the way the water cuts through the rock. Shows the sheer power something as simple as water has when it's constant. Once you get into those mountains the scenery really opens up! Glad you were able to go during the time of year when the tunnel was open. The color of iceberg lake is incredible. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for joining me on this one, Josh! Glacier, you probably know, is a "peace park" with Canada. Many have said the northern section in Canada is really impressive.
Ahh, what memories, made the hike from Chief Mtn border crossing in 1957 to Lake Elizabeth. No trail from the top, total bushwhack down to the river. Ranger Sta was active on the Belly river. Had 5 Boy scouts, no bears but the fishing was unbelievable. Made a later trip in 1989 from the Chief Mtn station just to the river, hardly any water flowing. There is now an improved trail from there down to the valley and a big parking lot with horse unloading facilities. How time has changed. LKH

Having worked a summer in GNP, the coolest hike I could take you on is called Shangri La to a lake high above Iceberg Lake. It’s described in A Climber’s Guide to GNP by J Gordon Edwards.
Take the trail to Redrock Falls, immediately after the creek crossing close to Redrock lake look for a path heading off to the right (North) and follow all the way to Shangri La, about a mile. Next, it’s recommended to scree ski, or glissade if snow is still present, down to Iceberg Lake.

Of the five hikes I completed that week, this one seemed to take the most out of me. Glacier's scenery is indeed amazing!
Another great hike Randy. Glacier has been on my bucket list for a while now. As tough and long as some of these hikes are I better get there sooner rather than later while I still have my hiking legs beneath me.
Right on... always see some older dudes out there, but no doubt some of these hikes could pass us by if we don't take advantage of them when we're able. Hope it works for you!
We are enjoying your videos from GNP. We visited in 2015, but were on a very ambitious road trip and didnt hike much. We always said we would go back and spend more time, but there are so many places to see we just haven't done it. Thanks for allowing us to hike with you. (We saw you at Mount St Helens, but didnt say hello.)

It is good to see another fellow hiker out in this fabulous scenic Park not racing to the turn around point and sprinting back. I was lucky enough to work there in 2019 but I was over near West Glacier and there from open to close. Super cool park, that area is pretty special, the views are stellar and I used to get asked a lot of questions about hikes and how much time it takes. Sadly about 99.9% of hikers never asked me if there were wildflowers, streams, creeks, small ponds or lakes, wildlife only interested in how long it took. I hike solo and take 2 bear spray cans and a small air horn mostly for location safety due to a possible S&R encounter. Saw many bears never had any issues with them either.
Great editing, love the slow moving pans and not hirky jerky ones, I know what it is like to set up the camera with the tripod do the filming stints too, solo. Thumbs up and I subscribed to your channel. Keep up the good work....very inspiring to watch.

People always ask me the same question "How long did the hike take me to do"? I really don't pay attention to that, honestly. This was a beautiful hike, and I really liked Iceberg Lake at the end!
Yeah, iceberg lake is even better earlier in the season when there are still literal icebergs on the lake! Have a blessed week!

Randy, when you were pointing out the trail up ahead at around 5:00, it looked as if the back of your hand was a little sweaty. Understandably so.
Yes, for some reason, this trail took the most out of me.
I'm going to be there for a week starting June 8th. bummed that the tunnel won't be open. Will I still get to the lake ?
