- Mark, who lives with wife Caroline and 3-year-old son William, was in his forties when he was diagnosed with Fronto-temporal dementia (FTD). Caroline shares their story, which challenges the huge misconception that dementia is all about memory loss and only happens to old people.

What is dementia?

She's clearly not getting enough help. Such a beautiful heart. The toll on caregivers can't be understated. Alzheimer Society and NIH need to do much more to advocate for caregivers too.

I was so moved by the film of Caroline and Mark. My husband has exactly the same dementia and was diagnosed when our son was 6. The pain of it is bottomless.

My husband’s nightmare began with a near fatal brain injury. So it was an instant tragedy and he remained on life support and in facilities four months before being discharged home.Now he has mixed dementia. I have been his caregiver the whole time. This summer will be year fourteen. It’s a long, painful, confusing ,exhausting and heartbreaking road. Bless you and carry on❤

My mother has Alzheimer’s. She sun downs hard and gets aggressive and accusatory. May God bless and comfort all caregivers helping a loved one with this awful disease.

So heartbreaking. She will eventually need to get help. He will forget how to walk, how to eat. And I hate to say it but her son needs her more than her husband. She can’t be a caregiver to both. I hope she has a good support network.

Looking after him may need to be soon putting him residential care, not a case of abandoning your vows, but you are going to have to be available for your child emotionally and physically, and that’s not possible when you are past the point of exhaustion. Unfortunately with dementia, sometimes people may become aggressive and you can’t have that around your son. Do what you can to take care of yourself.
Please prioritize some restorative self care sweet woman!!!! And placement is not failing your vows!!! Big hugs!!

Caroline, I hope you get this message! Hats off to you for sure! I am in the same position too. For four years, from 2003-2007 I too looked after my parents. Dad had Vascular Dementia. Mother, my best friend had Alzheimer's Disease too. Mother In Law who also is very close to me, she too has Dementia. It runs rapid in our families lives. Three years, ago, things started changing in my relationship with my husband and I. Lots of strange things going on with him. A lot of our aunts and uncles and grandparents had it too! In January of this year put my husband in an in between place where he could stay as he was unable to live with me. Seven months later, in July I find out he is going to a nursing home. His diagnosis, Front Lo Dementia too! Last October Murray turned 60, I turned 65 in June. It has been one hard year especially 2023. If it was not for a deep relationship with my Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. I do not know how I would have made it without him and the prayers and love and the help and the ears with family I have learned it is what it is. It me hard a couple of weeks, when reality set in that he is not coming home to live with me again. Met the man thirty nine years ago... So, that is all for you, I hear your pain, hear your breaking heart.. My thoughts go out to all of you, I hear you pain, not easy... My best friend has today been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia he’s 43 years old has a wife, a nine-year-old son and a 14-year-old daughter. They are finding it extremely difficult. I’m his best friend I’m watching this its really upsetting but your strength is amazing. I can only hope where as strong as you, especially my friends family. ❤

And this wonderful lady recieves the grand total of £70.00 a week Carer's Allowance and our wonderful caring Government want to get the disabled off of PIP and then Carer's lose their benefit too. Its a disgrace!

I've been caring for my husband for seven years. He was diagnosed with FTD in early 2016. He has the behavioral variant, and all his actions are impulse based. I miss the man I married.

My thoughts are with you. I cared for people with dementia until my retirement. And have had 3 friends with early onset.
I can’t imagine watching your husband so young anybody going though this my grandad has Alzheimer’s and dementia and it’s not easy of the carer that is looking after them it’s heartbreaking

My good friend of 20 years seems to be in the early stages of dementia at age 80. She gets very frustrated when we are in conversations. Angry at times. I don't believe that I can interact with her much longer. I always seem to say or do the wrong thing.
That is dementia caused by age. We all get that if we live long enough. Early dementia is something else. My dad got dementia at the age of 63 and lived tl 79. He disappeared in front of os. At the end he did not talk, did not understand just wanted to walk walk walk.....

It’s such an awful disease but even more when someone should be in their prime
While my immediate family has not been touched by dementia, too many of my closest friends have. And while a CNA, most of my clients suffered from this.
It’s a devastating disease and it effects the entire family.
My thoughts and sincere prayers go out to all who are touched by this disease. If you are a caregiver, I beg you… take care of yourself, find a support group that fills your needs and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Are they also young onset dementia? So sorry for your friends its horrible as all hell.

The saddest thing is that he is only going to get worse and she will have to find long-term care. Hard enough to raise a child alone, especially when your spouse has a terminal illness.

My wife has dementia he was diagnosed last seven years back
Watching this... its not a sadness i feel. Its an ache. A deep pain. Does that make sense? A feeling of loss and a feeling of injustice about the whole thing. Its just not fair. Not for her, not for their son, and certainly not for Mark.
My mom did that for my dad. ❤❤ That is called love.

It's Amazing How ❤ Conquers All.
Unfortunately it runs in my family. My great great granny had it, my great granny had it, my granny was one of 11 children & everyone of them got it, now I'm more than petrified my mum might get it. I know I will get it but luckily I don't have anymore family once my parents go. My late granny didn't know her only child - my mum, but recognised me as her granddaughter, she thought my dad was her brother who died during ww2 on HMS Hood. It is a nasty, horrible upsetting disease, very cruel.

My husband has dementia, he was diagnosed in March is 2022
Alzheimer's can be caused by many things including diet, what you drink. Sugar. Sweetners, no social life. When you sleep late? , stressing out n not managing STRESS.
This can be REVERSED by
Going for walks, reading out loud, writing and reading each day, managing STRESS, hobby, swimming/ crafting/ fishing/, learning something new like a language, new recipe, Word search, puzzles, sudoku, exercise, gardening, reduce sugar, No fizzy drinks, drinking water. STOP alcohol as this dehydrated the body which cause strokes.
* walking backwards.
* sleep is important- try to sleep early like 9- 9:30pm.
* how old are you please? - youngsters are getting memory problems aswell so not to worry.

For women:::Memory problems can happen durring grieving/ pre menopausal years as may have 2 periods in 1 month- so eating iron ferritin rich foods as important.
* living with an understanding partner helps but you must change diet. Can be REVERSED- more videos from ted talks

Husband has dementia but don’t know wht kind…now has lost language …. Sleeps abt 21 hours …a day….awake only when eating

I can not think of a harder thing to live with and live through other than dementia (in any form or stage). Forgetting who you are, who your family is, and where you come from is torture. I commend anyone who continues to care for their family and loved ones with dementia. It's got to be one of be hardest tests from God.
