Not controversial at all. We French base a huge part of our identity from the 1789 revolution. That 's our History, we're proud of it, and known worldwide for it.

this part of history isnt considered to be controversial at all. marie-antoinette was famous for her disdain of the common people and her inability to think from their perspective. When told that the common people were starving because the bread ran out she asked why the commoners couldnt just eat cake instead. Her execution and the execution of her husband king louis the 16th mark a significant moment in the french revolution and indeed in the history of the world as many of the revolutions that would follow in other nations would be modeled after the one in france in terms of ideals. The french revolution isnt controversial at all here in Europe and everyone agrees that it was a good thing. What Gojira did here is celebrate an important part of french and world history that links us all.
This was without a doubt the BEST of the opening of the Olympic Games and this band making Metal stand out. This band was already known to metal lovers for their great activism, their lyrics, their simpolism, everything, and with this presentation they broke the INTERNET. For me, the charm of Gojira lies in how genuine they are, they do not want to pose as "bad", in addition to the archetype of their lyrics about real problems, and not about mutilations, murders, nuclear winters or things like that that are a constant of the gender. Added to all this is an enormous technique of interpretation, composition and a real and artistic declaration of principles, similar to bands like Tool, Mastodon, Soen, Devin Townsend Project/Strapping Young Lad or Meshuggah.
Millieeeeee!!! Great to see you again. Great reaction, like always. I love how you pick up on so many details on all kinds of music! People, our awesome Millie here appreciates it all, from metal, to Yes, to Pedro Infante, to The Warning, to Deep Purple to Calibre 50, all the way to Héctor Lavoe and Serú! You are a true artist, and you’re truly awesome 👏🏽 And nop, no worries. I didn’t know of this song, either, so yeah, it’s all good. We always discover something everyday. Take care, Millie! Great to see you more often lately 👍🏽😄
Gojira was a good choice for music on the illustration of a rebellion time. - 0:30-0:33 : it's actually pronounced "ah, sa eerah" - the cedilla under the letter 'c' is a stylisation of the little 's' medievals wrote under the letter 'c' when it was to be pronounced like a 's' before 'a', 'o' or 'u'. This is what the singer on the balcony is beginning with before Gojira kicks in. - The introductory scene rightly refers to Marie-Antoinette's decapitation, but also alludes to Elisabeth II's appearance on a balcony at the London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony. French humour : we can display a queen on a balcony too, but in a much more republican way. - The complete wordings of this intro (the refrain/chorus of a popular song during the 1789 French Revolution") are "Ah, ça ira. Les aristocrates à la lanterne, on les pendra." Meaning "Everything will be fine : we will HANG the aristocrats at the street light [post]." But before Marie-Antoinette was hung months, Doctor Guillotin had invented his machine (guilotine) to make the execution quicker and less painful for the victim than hanging (that was the idea).
Actually it wasn't exactly Gojira. It was Gojira AND opera singer Marina Viotti AND philharmonic Orchestre de Paris (out of scope of the cameras). Have you also noticed American singer Lady Gaga also singing during the ceremony, in perfect French, "Mon truc en plume" (French revue scenery) ?
The end of the clip is censored ? Normally at the end you have red ribbon thrown from the windows. It represent blood. There is also explosion... Anyway, nice reaction (i'me french)
Marina Viotti! She's great! Fan of opera speaking here - she's one of the best and most versatile mezzo-soprano in the young(ish) generation. And actually she didn't just "crossover" into metal - she *fronted* several metal bands (most notably one called Soulmaker) for ten years before moving to classical/lyrical singing - and she's still a metalhead. Fun (and awesome) fact: she is actually the one doing the massive metal growl at 3:44, right after a pure classical vocalise. Yeah, that's her range and how versatile she is as a singer!

You're absolutely right my compatriot.🇫🇷🇫🇷
Bien au contraire. Si pour toi la partie Woke de cette cérémonie d'ouverture fait partie de notre identité, tu fais partie du problème.

Kinda sucks that they cut the video short so much since to me, that last bit was the most impressive visual impression.

What I found out is that the opera singer (whose name I forget here) has crossed over to metal before this, likewise jazz.
