How to Properly Treat Your Cheap or Expensive Pocket Knife.

  • While it may seem odd, I needed to make a video on how to properly treat your knife. I do a lot of dumb stuff, so let this video serve as a disclaimer for my channel. Should you baton? Will batoning hurt my knife. What's a good way to sharpen your blade? What type of steel should you buy? I sort of answer some of these questions, and hopefully if you're new to knives or a pocket knife this is a good place to start. Fixed blades, folding knives, switchblade, and even karambits. Also sorry to my regular subscribers I reused a bunch of footage.

      @@AdvancedKnifeBro hey mate, thanks for the great videos, love your style 👍
      I've got a few spare guided sharpeners and I'm happy to send you one if you like for blades that aren't suited to the spyderco sharpmaker. Ive got the same one and it's fine for normal sized blades but when you get to machetes and kukris and hatchets or for chipped edges and whatnot, it's not the easiest solution.
      Anyway, happy to send you one for free-I'll cover postage and all that, no need to do anything other than promise me you'll use it at least twice before you make your mind up about it because it gives great results.
      Thanks again for the really great videos. I can't tell you how good it is to find content like yours.

    If you're willing to take advice from a hunter, gun barrel maintenance oil is great for rust protection on high carbon steel blades. It may be expansive, but if correctly applied it sticks a lot better (and longer) on the steel, doesn't stain it and doesn't grease your hands when you're touching the blade.

    Love your videos it's a nice take the typical knife review channel.
    For the rusting bit polishing them with mineral oil will go a long way. For my blades that are more susceptible to rusting I coat/polish them once a week the rest receive that once a month. Mineral oil is the stuff that chemistry teachers use to keep more reactive metals like sodium from sparking/exploding by keeping it away from both both water and air. By that logic it also prevents rusting.

    "There is no price point where a knife will cease to fail." Common sense, along with that all knives may rust. But something every TH-cam knife channel should say at some point, and some non-comedy channels should start every video with.
    Trying to make this a promotion comment with some meaning and not total nonsense because I can't afford to Patreon let alone a Vakra. So I'll just say thanks again besides commenting, liking (even older), and subscribing. Is Brofix a word? Cause I need it every now and again and again.

    Soft screws are a smart design feature; they prevent the female threads in the frame/liner from being stripped out.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coudln't they make those non soft too?

    • @ian.turnbull
      @ian.turnbull 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guess they could. What I think they are doing is using the screws as a sacrificial part (or the designated weak point). Screws are cheap and easy to replace compared to other parts of a knife. For example, I somehow managed to rip the clip off of my Delica. The thread on the 3 screws was stripped, but the thread in the tapped holes of the liner was fine. Spyderco sent me 3 replacement screws, no questions asked, and I was able to repair the knife myself. However if the screws had been stronger, it is likely I would have damaged the threads in the liner. I doubt Spyderco would send me a free replacement liner. Smarter Every Day has a good video on Shear Pins (same concept, different application) that I recommend.
      I really enjoy your videos! Keep on keeping on.

I don’t know if they still have the problem in current production knives, but about a decade ago every one of those 7 knives pivot screws loosened and/or fell out. I actually have a serious question for once... when you sharpen do you get to hair shaving sharp(not like just one or two hairs) or do you only go up to fine paper slicing sharp?

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Somewhere in between... if if I get paper slicing in a few minutes or less, I go for something that can shave my arm. My Spydercos and even Ganzos do this the fastest and best.

    I totally agree that a folder isnt meant for buttoning, but what about a cold steal s35vn steel knife with tri-ad lock like the SR1?

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those work great. I did this video because I got sick of the no batoning comments... because for some reason certain people don’t understand it’s kind of a joke. My advice is do with your knives what you want. Tri-ads are strong and hold up well to batoning.

    I've found that using a spray oil called Ballistol works really well for preventing rust on high carbon knives. Also prefer it to 3 in 1 for lubing folders because it doesn't smell like shit for days after lubing it. And if you complain about how your knife smells like shit after lubing it, people might get the wrong idea.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro

      Yeah 3 in 1 is a little smelly- I'll check it out.

    Hi Mark,
    You've been in this TH-cam game for a long time, so what I am going to say is probably not anything you do not already know. I just wanted to take the time to applaud your videos and say that I hope you keep doing what you are doing.
    The story of how I became your subscriber went something like this: I chanced upon your channel because I was interested in a review of the Case Sodbuster and a Higonokami because I recently developed an interest in traditional knives. Your channel is one of the few that gives a review of these knives. Then, I stumbled upon your reviews of your ESEE Knives, of which I am a fan. I have to admit that I mostly fast-forwarded through your videos, and I did not understand the point or meaning of your reviews at first. I thought to myself, "These reviews aren't really helpful. This guy just does dumb shit with his knives." But, as I kept watching videos and actually paying attention to them, I started to see the appeal: you are hilarious!
    The proper term to describe your comedy is "parody." Comic poets use imitation to ridicule the all-too-serious - even deadly serious - subject matter of tragedy. All of this humor requires intelligence, self-awareness, and recognition of the social and cultural tendencies around these industries not only on your part, but on the part of your audience to understand the full depth of your jokes. Clearly, not everyone is capable of that level of understanding. I found that you are not only poking fun of yourself, but your audience, and I have felt more than a few jokes hit very close to home. It took me a while to realize the amount of intention that went into your scripts and videography. (I mean, the lube jokes in front of the altarpiece! C'mon, that's funny!) At the end of the day, anyone can dismiss you for just "joking" or "playing," but your videos are more honest and truthful than those of most other channels, partly because of your caustic humor. And, based on the laugh-out-loud worthy quips I have heard you say, I highly doubt you are giving biased reviews or are in the pocket of any knife manufacturer. Not only are you self-deprecating, but by imitating and exaggerating other knife reviewers, your comedy gets to the heart of those people who take themselves too seriously about their knives; who fantasize about survival; who convince themselves of many absurd situations in which they may use their EDC; who follow the latest trends of the knife, EDC, and gear industry; who are obsessed with and who reinforce the overwhelming industry of tactically designed knives that will never be used "tactically;" and who are gullible enough to buy knives composed of super-materials and do not understand that this is just another marketing ploy. (I am sure everyone one of us has been prone to doing one of those things, too.) Sometimes, you enter the territory of being blasphemous by ridiculing some of the most successful TH-cam content creators, like Nutnfancy, Wranglerstar, Dave Canterbury, as well as the big name brands. In addition, you are unafraid to irreverently question the use of modern super-material/super-steel knives, their durability, and their cost because, as the saying goes, "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link," and these super-material knives are overhyped and unproven: they are the textbook example of diminishing returns of performance. Moreover, you blatantly draw attention to cost-cutting problem of how most companies - which are already competing in an oversaturated market - feel the pressure of maintaining a competitive advantage by cutting costs somewhere, whether by using soft screws, using cheap handle materials, including low quality sheaths, exporting labor costs, loosening quality control/fit-and-finish standards, etc.. You also do not shy away from ridiculing internet warriors, backyard bushcrafters, tacticool LARPers, bro-dudes, and flat-bottom, desk-pushing weekend warrior campers. The knife and gear industry is full of so many diverse companies, designs, and people, and it is prone to sudden and massive cultural shifts in trends. This industry has a tough crowd, so you will never please everyone.
    Your content clearly flies over the heads of those people who say that you are not using your knives or gear "correctly," or who say that you do not know what you are doing. But, these people do not even understand the paradox and predicament of being a knife or gear reviewer: on the one hand, your audience will want a review of the true limitations of the knives and gear which they hope to buy, but if you use your knives "correctly," then we would never know the limitations and faults of the knives and gear that you test. On the other hand, if you use your knives and gear "incorrectly," then you get criticized for how you use them by another group of people who will undoubtedly say, [idiot person accent] "Well, of course, you broke your knife! That's not how you're supposed to use it!" Regarding the use of your knives, I can appreciate that you torture and destroy your knives by using them imprudently. You baton the ugliest wood full of knots; you chop wood in a hastily manner; you stab and pry logs with the tips of your knives; you baton folding knives; you utterly abuse your knives by using them in such an absurd and humorous manner. Anyone worth one's salt has learned not to abuse their tools so as to avoid injury to oneself and damage to one's tools. However, your experience and knowledge can be heard through your script - even if it is not seen in your actions in the video - by those who care to listen closely. (My favorite quote from you is: "There is no price point where knives cease to fail.") And, I give you props that you were able to destroy your Junglas II. You definitely got the attention of the guys at ESEE Knives for that.
    In short, I just want to say that your videos are not only a departure, but a great relief from the current trends of the knife, EDC, and gear industry, as well as the TH-cam channels that only amplify and reinforce those trends. I know that by commenting on your videos, I am opening myself up to ridicule or criticism, but I just wanted to say that this is the video that convinced me to subscribe to your channel, I wish I had found it sooner, and I hope you continue to make more videos like this one.

      Wow, that's quite a find of a comment. Can't reasonably respond to all of that, but the name dropping part gave me massive nostalgia and the part about cost effectiveness, diminishing returns and "proper care" reminds me of how I got into otf knives few weeks ago. I got a 50-ish dollars replica of Ultratech and was not confident in using it, until I saw a guy hammer both original and replica knives into a damn two by four like a nail. Realistically, no one should ever do this and for this tomfoolery the blade steel wouldn't make a zilch of difference. But the sheer fact that "wow, those things really are built strong, both of them" made me realize that even though the world of knives changed a lot (I remember when vg10 and s30v where the m390 of their day and now D2 is the new AUS8, and knife bros act like you can't even fucking cut with it or you would be ridiculed to the point you'd even be embarrassed to hand it out to a homeless man trying to cut his food with sticks and stones), it's dope af how you can still get an absolute banger for a reasonable price point and it's funny how the hair splitting one up game is just the same in high end knives as it ever was.
      Long story short, I'm happy with my clone'tech, confident in it's strength, and all thanks to a dude absolutely smashing the shit out of them intentionally to find out :D

    I just remembered something an uncle told me. He was telling the story of how he broke the tip of one of his premium steel knives just popping a staple out of a stack of papers lol. Super high HRC is cool and all that but damn if a staple can take it out that easily what's the point.
    Also screw an expensive sharpener. I use a $6 diamond coated stone that starts at rough 750 grit but smooths out to perfection over time. I used to think sharpening was sort of a process only because I didn't realize I was oversharpening for a while. When an edge was too dull to cleanly slice regular paper I would give it 10 passes or so on each side til I realized to get any decent steel phone book paper push cutting sharp I just needed one pass maybe 2 on each side. Takes 5 seconds.

    when you want to baton a log with a folding knife without damaging it as much you should unlock the knife- literally have the blade and the handle at 90° angle so you dont damage the locking mechanism

      Yes, and also remember to make a wedge out if another log first so you’re actually batoning on another piece of wood and not your knife.

    Great vid. You batton like I run. It ain't pretty, but gets the job done, LOLAnd then there is the mirror ninja stuff, it was PRICELESS, HahahaOn a serious note, excellent video and very practical. On the soft screw heads, here is what this crazy O'l man does. I make sure I have the right bit for it, I use a small air impact screw gun. The impact screw gun will loosen the crew without tearing up the head. But you MUST make sure you have the right tip or it all goes to hell. I screwed up a couple of knives and had to drill out the damm screws. With the impact screw gun I got 100% success and you know that is bot easy for a worn out 68 year dude. If you get a chance try it. I use a air impact, but you can use an electric impact screw gun, just make sure it is an impact and not just a regular screw gun.

      The more awkward the batoning the better. Generally seasoned wood cut straight across works best... however I do not have any of that wood laying around, and often have to use what falls from the trees. Thanks for the tip on the screw heads!
