    The infotainment system has gone through a software and also a hardware change. So, it is probably safe to assume, that anybody who bought an example from an earlier batch of production, is stuck with the broken system for the lifetime of the car. Nice one, VW.

    • @autogefuehl

      Yes you can only get a software update but not the new chip of course

    • @cwx8
      @cwx8 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      This should be illegal. Not only because it was just plain bad. But because infotainment is a really important part of the car now. Emissions aren't the only type of environmental impact we need to be concerned about. For everything else, having products that last much longer is a great way to reduce impact. For that to be feasible these infotainment systems MUST be hardware and software upgradable over time. Standards should be put in place for their development.

    • @povilassvedas7715
      @povilassvedas7715 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@cwx8 An infotainment system is something the owner interacts with all the time and yet, they have decided to let it out the factory in this sorry state, presumably, to save money. It makes you wonder, if something so obvious, is finished to a very low standard, what is the quality of the rest of the parts, the parts you cannot see and touch.

I always thought they were until I drove long distance in a Toyota Corolla and it felt like I was never even sitting. I feel the Corolla rental I drove at the beginning of the year was far more comfortable in both seat comfort and driving position than the VW and even my Mercedes.

But hey, they got you to do a whole new review of it so I guess it was worth it for the airtime. A couple of LEDs behind those sliders was obviously a bridge too far. That colour is hideous too. It sure would be nice to see the Golf return to North America especially in this R-Line model but sales dictate otherwise. Although my 2012 Jetta Highline 2.5 is an excellent vehicle my personal preference would be a 2017 - 2019 Golf Alltrack but my Jetta only has 50,000 kms so it makes sense to keep it going as it has plenty of life left in it still. I quite enjoy this Golf R-Line review though, it’s a lovely automobile and you explain everything with a flair that makes me smile. As someone who owns a Golf 8 and bought it last year, I don't mind the trashy infotainment system, since I barely use it. The bluetooth connection often disconnects, but besides that, I don't see other issues. I have the 1.5L eTSI DSG 150PS model and I'm 100% happy. Its a daily fun car, its adequately fast and it turns beautifully on corners. I never use SatNav because I just don't need it, but when I do, which is rarely, it works. The speakers sound great, engine noise is barely noticeable and at 110kph the car cruises at 2000rpm. My lowest fuel economy peaked at 4L per 100kms (I got the lowest figure doing around 60kph) and the worst at 9L in heavy traffic. Its a great car to be honest if you exclude the shitty infotainment system.

      Just cost saving. The buyer gets his bonus for cheap purchasing...and since this is the case, it always starts with a too weak CPU and also for other parts of the car...dumb, but this happens again and again and again. It is also the fault of the engineering, since they have to tell the buyer the exact needed CPU, too.
      If anything is 5cents cheaper they will buy this, although it costs more at the end...in this case even drop in trust to the brand.
      I drive a Passat GTE and got only the latest Update...after...I researched myself which Version is the latest...no one at the dealer could tell me the latest Version for my given hardware.
      Still extremely slow and annoying, but at least stable without crashes now....start of navigation lasts about 50s...you drove 300m during this time and got lost in an unknown city.
      Thankfully Android Auto starts much faster...and with this I never ever use the internal Navigation Software.

    I knew something wasn’t right when VW focused on the “all new digital Golf 8” in their advertisements 2 years ago. I’d rather they dialled back some of the infotainment technology which is a gimmick and very un-VW-like and dialled in some ergonomic regarding the centre screen. Elsewhere, it’s still clearly a thoroughly engineered high quality product given how strangled auto makers are right now and how expensive it is to make anything. In the not too distant future, we will be lucky to even have cars this size available.

    These touch controls as they are implemented by VW are a pain to use. By the time they decided they should have "touch" it seemed hip, but in practice it does not work well. I wonder who does the usability tests at VW? Someone that does not dare to speak it out clear that they went into the wrong direction? You do so many unintended things with touch, and that you have to look at the steering wheel is in addition a security issue. I use both concepts in practice with the I3 and the ID.3 and you can securely operate the I3s switches on the steering wheel easily and precisely blind, with the ID.3 it is very unrelaxed and error prone.

    Great review as always - sad the golf is such a disappointing vehicle, as a 3 time golf owner this one just looks cheap - the rline in the review I really though had wheel trims on 😵 the exterior is fine, the inside looks so (is) budget - considered buying one, sat in at the dealer and walked away - I would go as far; the French brands feel way classier and modern - unbelievable to this that could happen, the Korean brands fill the hole Golf has left in reliability and usability - if you want a group car, head to Skoda or Audi, way way better than VW 😭

    I am right now renting a Mk 8 Golf - pre-update. It is the most annoying car I have driven in years, mostly because of the terrible controls, instruments and infotainment. The update reviewed here looks like an improvement. But we still have those annoying capacitative slider controls - almost impossible to avoid touching by accident when you use the touchscreen - and the terrible system of menus in the driver’s display. The new version of the car features a new chip, which means an older car can not be improved to the new standard by software update.
