  • For many years workers lived in the mining shacks and worked in the coal mines around Beckley, West Virginia to make a decent living. The mine closed in 1910 and reopened for tours 50 years later.
Today you can take a tour of the mine with a guide who will take you through a part of the mine and demonstrate how the miners day to day work life would have been as well as the tools they used and even tools that miners today would use. Upon arrival you can purchase a ticket and tour the museum on site. It features many dioramas as well as artifacts and items used in this mine and others while shining a more historical light on the place. After the tour of the mine itself you can take a self guided tour of the grounds to see how the miners and their families lived and interacted with each other. I consider this a rare glimpse into the lives of those miners who sacrificed so much.
Admission also gives access to an adjacent youth museum.
    Thanks for watching!

We toured this exhibit in the late 70's and it's much more interesting and tells a great story of the hard working miners now. Good video.
