The world is too mediocre and full of itself to honor great artists like Bartok while they are still alive. It is only after the artists have died that the world wakes from its stupefied slumber and begins to appreciate the richness the artists have left behind.
We were a reasonably musical family, back in the 50s soon after the war, I was brought up listening to Dvorak New World, Rach 2, Beethoven symphonies, Tchaikovsky pathetique - you get the picture. Not a bad collection to kick start a child's interest in classical music. However, I overheard, because my family talked were interested in music, them talk about a composer called Bartok who was "the antichrist","the monster composer", "the fraud"., "the man who wrote a violin concerto that was booed in Holland". A bogeyman, So a few years later, when I was 14 - more than six decades ago - My Parents were out and I saw in the Radio Times that Bartok's 3rd pno concerto with Annie Fischer was to be broadcast. I wanted to hear the monster. I turned on the radio. I can't find the words to say how that work gripped my soul and how from there I have slowly explored every work thaty Bartok wrote. I played Bartok on the piano at school concerts. I always have a piece by Bartok on my piano. Slowly, but slowly, people are realising that Bartok is a towering genius. I loved the documentary.
Well now his works are amongst the most performed world wide. The 'Shining has nothing to do with his popularity, he was already a celebrated composer.
He wasn't a THUG...a Womanizer, Tortured Homosexual, a Junkie, or a 3 Chord Hack blessed with Rock Star looks....therefore - Bartok garners a few thousand views, and 3 comments. Would he even be known at all if it weren't for his Music being used in "The Shining"? Human Life in 2022...You DESERVE all you have coming your way!
