I really like this guy. Please have Frank Tarzi back on as many times as possible! I did not know that he was connected with Olive but it makes sense because Olive was great, especially their premium limited releases they did toward the end.

Kino's pricing is so consumer friendly, especially during their quarterly sales, I usually blind buy many without feeling guilty. Plus, they offer so many titles from different decades and genres, anyone can find films to enjoy.

I appreciate you asking about Columbo, Heath, and I understand Frank's position. If there's a legal situation that means he can't talk about it, then that's where we are for the moment. But I do still think we deserve to know the truth about one of the biggest screw-ups in recent physical media history. Because someone DID screw up here.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I think it's interesting that you frame it that way, that it has to be someone's fault, rather than an unfortunate side effect of the ongoing legal battle over Columbo. Google Columbo and 2023 and you'll see a little bit of what's going on with the series. I don't know how it all ties together, and we probably never will, but sometimes things happen and it's not anyone's fault.

Wonderful interview Heath. For me Kino Lorber is now doing just as good job for film fans as even Criterion! Really appreciated the openness of Frank who clearly loves movies and respects us fans. I buy as much as I can afford.

Kino has more interesting releases in a month than Criterion releases in a year. And Kino includes audio commentary tracks more often than Criterion. I subscribe to the Criterion channel but I buy my physical discs from Kino.

Heath, thank you for all you do. Your interviews with Frank as so entertaining and thought provoking. Frank, that you for all you do supporting physical media and saving these important films. Also, Thank you for releasing them at a very reasonable price. By the way, 4k's are special but having at least a bluray of a film is always appreciated. Thank you!

Heath! Another amazing interview with awesome content. I really enjoyed this interview with Frank. Kino is rocking right now and it sounds like there is no slowing down. You can tell Frank has a real passion for film and film history. I wish all of the “why no 4k?” people would listen to this interview, there is so much that goes into those decisions. This interview illustrates those challenges and decisions. GREAT STUFF! Thank you!

The Straight Talk Express returns! Always great. Dropping the Columbo features was a big disappointment. Looking forward to Kino's massive 2024 line-up. Random question: Why do movies ever get put out on disc without the trailer? I assume the trailer is always available with the movie. Just lazy oversight? I really like watching the trailer when I watch a movie, and it's annoying when the old DVD has it, but the Blu-ray or 4K doesn't.

Someone tell Frank Tarzi thank you for the Audie Murphy box sets and I don’t mind whether some of the films are not HD or not the right aspect ratio as long as an audio commentary track and subtitles are included with each film in the box set. I will buy a physical disc version of a movie if it includes subtitles and audio commentary track.

Another fantastic interview. I am looking at my budget to see about adding the Kino Film Collection to my Amazon Prime. Streamers like that can often be the best advertisement; can't say how often I have purchased the disc because I loved the movie on the streamer, and, likewise, how often I have saved the money b/c the film didn't end up appealing to me.
A question was brought up about the Susan Hart collection. I had read that there was trouble with Shout Factory with those; what I read was that litigation was involved. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that? B/C that would go a long way to explaining the absence of these movies on anything other than bootlegs.

I wish Kino would upen up their site to worldwide (even though they region lock the blurays)... They run some great sales. I don't fully understand the announcing movie releases so farrrrr out in advance that they often do, they just open themselfs up way more to the comments that frank is talking about (when it this coming out, you announced it a year+ ago etc).

Totally agree, they say this movie didn’t sell as well because…Well how about going Worldwide instead of paying exorbitant prices on Amazon for such titles. I have a multi region player but it’s those inflated prices. I get I’m from Australia so there is the conversion rate. What I find frustrating is these companies have great sales on and Amazon will never pass those prices on…It’s a head scratcher…

Once again Heath thanks for bringing back Frank Tarzi !! It’s always great to hear from him and having the two of you discussing the ins and outs of how the business and art side of home video works .
It’s often difficult for us as fans to ask “why is my favorite film not coming into print or not going to 4K”, when we only see the end result and not both how sales do , or how the costs of production play the roles they do in what comes out , when it comes out and in what format.
My hope is that he has a long successful run at Kino ! He’s clearly the guiding force (or one of the guiding forces) at Kino.
I can’t believe all the great titles they’ve put out this year and look forward to 2024 !!
Please bring Frank back next year !!
I’ve already got my preorder in for Columbo !!! I can’t wait . Even without the bonus features , the remastering (and alternate shorter cut of Etude in Black ??) will be worth it . I’ve loved the job done on Night Gallery - night and day over the initial dvd release . The extra wait will be worth it .
As you’ve noted several times over the past year - we’re living in the golden age for home video . Im stunned at what is coming to blu ray and 4K.
Thanks again for the interview / discussion and topics !!

Heath you did not ask some important questions like… when is I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF and I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN and IT CONQUERED THE WORLD and INVASION OF THE SAUCER-MEN coming out on blu ray or 4K these titles must be released by one of these studios like kino cult or film masters. The studios has to get it together before these classics are lost. Even Frank said b sci fi and horror classics make money. THINK ABOUT IT. these titles were never on DVD. only on VHS 40 years ago and that’s pretty lame. These studios keep re-hashing the same titles. Ask them what’s going with these titles.

If you have a future interview, I’d like to see if you can ask Frank: 1) What is the process by which Kino Lorber goes through to get legal and budgetary approval for commentary and other extras for their releases like the ones that originally got green-lit for Columbo? 2) In general, what are the possible challenges that can arise during the final stages of the process to include extras within their releases? 3) Was there no way to release SOME of the extra content for Columbo or was it an absolute “All or Nothing” scenario? 4) What lessons learned from the Columbo release has Kino Lorber taken to help them avoid similar situations in the future?
