I love the big grin on Zuko's face when Sokka's dad pulls him in for a hug. It's so rare to see him actually smile even when he's not made that it feels like a reward in and of itself. Zuko was finally able to stop "being so bad at being good" and actually help his friends in a meaningful way for the first time, and he's so excited about it. I love it.
And it affects what happens to Azula the rest of the series. If she still had the people she could lean on (physically and emotionally), she would be that much tougher to fight.
Azula would have have killed Mai in an instant but Mai would not go down without a fight. Similar to Ty Lee, Mai knows the human body and its weak points. Azula will pretty much survive, but give it a few days and she would have died.
This was a great episode, and i think a good insight into what the dynamic of Azula, Mai & Ty Lee's friendship actually was. Ty Lee's a good person, and I think she was genuinely friends with both of them, and on some level I think Azula valued her friendship with Ty Lee as well, since she apologizes to her in episode 5 after snapping at her. Where with Mai, i think it's more by association/transactional, and likewise on Mai's end, where her & Ty Lee are also genuinely friends. Its an interesting thing to look at. But its an important moment either way, Azula, still a 14 year old with way too much on her plate, just lost her 2 perceived friends because she can't comprehend the concept of friendship without fear & manipulation since she was taught anything else was a weakness.
@@pee-buddy she was also only like 8. Kids can be the product of their environments. We see that a lot in the series, especially with the Fire Nation children. The new comic about Azula also does a great job of going into detail on why she is the way she is without absolving her of the things she's done.
@pee-buddy thats mainly due to the fact that their mother (who was evidently much more caring and emotional than their father) clearly favored zuko over azula. its made clear multiple times that their mother didnt pay much attention to azula except to scold her. azula was practically raised by her father, while zuko was practically raised by his mother.
Dang, I haven’t seen this one in a minute but DAMN that moment with Mai hits. And hell, right after that with Ty Lee, it’s just the first time we see Azula just utterly beaten, even if it’s just for a moment.
I'll never get over how the guards never think twice about cutting the gondola line while the Firelord's daughter, literally their princess, was on board
I did like Mai from the get-go. I think she's fun but this episode sure catapulted her up in my list and probably everyone else's. This show really delivers with the character arcs of even side ones while many others don't even with the main ones.

Ty Lee stole this entire episode. It's so incredibly satisfying to see Azula finally learn the difference between having loyalty and being feared. And the most pathetic part is she actually believed those two were her friends. So she's actually hurt by this.

I wonder when this "teaching" took place specifically because Azula's nature as a child was clearly shown in the "Zuko Alone" episode.
