THE LIFE, LOVE & HATE OF A FREE JAZZ MAN & HIS WOMAN

- This is the story of Arthur Doyle, once a promising saxophonist in the New York school of Jazz' New Thing in the late 1960s and 1970s. Doyle, like many of his contemporaries, has struggled to maintain a healthy balance between life and music. The evidence of years spent pursuing a completely original sound is all around him. It is in his eyes, in his home and in the voices of his family. This film tells the story of a man who managed to live through his relationship with music. Now nearly 70, Doyle seems to be defying those forces that would keep him as a footnote in the history of American music.
A film by Jorge Torres-Torres
Thank you Jorge for posting this amazing and wonderful film by a giant of music. I enjoyed it very much.
Great work man! Beautiful shots, intense and profoundly human. Nothing more in tune with the free spirit and soul of jazz!!!
Brilliant film! Shot beautifully and just a deep sense of who Arthur is. I haven’t seen a documentary this well done in a long time.
Thank you so much.
Thank you for making this available. Powerful and beautiful and utterly sublime.
So he seems to take the idea of playing what moves in you, what you feel, maybe from Ayler and Dolphy, and maybe Coltrane a lot, I can see that in Coltrane, and wow 1:09:57 that is alive playing, burning fire, jeez got to buy something. ,:-0
Yeah jeez that is powerful, in other live performances and that it's easy to think he's aloof, and I can see here that it's interesting what he was doing. ,:-0
Quite interesting, will look into it ,:-0
At 1:09:57 he's taking the pain from life it seems to me and putting it through his horn, powerful, obviously then pain doesn't defeat you just makes you stronger and live a life where you understand yourself and are satisfied and on the right track not sitting behind whatever and spying on some person while feeling otherwise empty.
And that's the best come back blowing those people's faces off with powerful playing, they can't do anything but have the truth smashed into their skull
Arthur....we will never forget you
Awesome film! I hope it gets more circulation.
unique
20 mins in - that fit is TIGHT
I would love to see closed caption of this. Did he die of lung cancer?
Its long past time to seperate and make differant catagories of free music and jazz
Free music has origins in classical music with john cage and other free music advocates.
You cant equate cage with Debussy
Just make your own catagory. It does jazz no good to try to fit this music inside jazz , for either idiom
Whoa, he went all the way…
I'm a jazz musician. I don't really understand this too much in the musical aspect. Many more socially of one individual
What Year was this filmed?
