With both sadness and clarity, I am retiring from professional soccer. Unfortunately, my knee can no longer tolerate the impact that elite soccer requires. Though this isn't what I wanted, it’s clear that this is the only path forward for me. I want to thank everyone who has been on my team throughout this journey- soccer has put so many wonderful things in my life, but the most wonderful thing has been the people. To all of my family, friends, teammates, and fans- I truly feel that we did this together and I’m extremely grateful. I plan to share more about the journey of my injury someday. I know that there are many athletes who have faced the unique struggle of stepping away from sport early and I think these stories deserve to be told - and heard. But in the meantime, even in great disappointment, there are silver linings. Today, I am excited to announce that I’ll be joining the Men in Blazers Media Network to lead women’s soccer coverage. The Women’s Game will follow American, European, and International soccer. This is an amazing opportunity for me and one that I feel extremely grateful to have been presented with at such a pivotal moment in my life. My sincerest thanks to all of you and I’ll see you soon! - Sam
Sam,I wasn’t a huge fan when you won the World Cup. But I love the national team so much now. Then I watch a video say you hurt. Heart broken💔. Your a funny kind hearted person with so many accomplishments. I maybe not be the person you would need or want a im proud of you from but even though you are hurt I am still very excited to see what comes next in your life. I love snack and so you think you know sam.
So sorry to hear that, Sam. From my European perspective, you were the best player of your generation in that US midfield post the World cup win. You were also, to my mind, the best player in the WSL during your year at Man City. All the best with your future plans
Congrats on the new gig!! “Snacks” was SUCH a fun glimpse of Sam Mewis - The Broadcaster, so I can’t wait to see her flourish in this new role. Well played, MIB, for scooping up this elite talent for your squad.
I loved watching Sam play, now I love listening to her talk about the game. Such a wonderful personality. Funny, spirited and knowledgeable. She will never be a former player to me, always and forever a legend of the game. Only now she is also one of my favourite podcast hosts. Good luck Sam in everything that comes next. Everyone is in your corner.
I only got into football after this past olympics in paris, but I watched a bunch of Sam's interviews with the players I liked, and finally made it here after a few pieces/places mentioned her injury-fueled retirement. I love Sam's charisma and skill leading interviews, and even though I didn't grow up watching the sport or her, this interview made me cry. Sam seems like a great person and, like other greats I've heard a lot about recently, I feel like I missed out in a way, coming into the sport after she was already retired. What a journey she's been on. While the end wasn't exactly what she wanted, she's handled it with grace. Funny, passionate, knowledgeable, and charismatic, I can only imagine what it was like seeing such a player compete live. Can't wait to see where else this new journey takes her
I'm so glad this show is happening, and it's so hard to believe Sam won't be physically on the field. But she literally changed the game, and I can't wait to hear more from her. Huge Mewis Fan!
So excited to watch where you go expanding the women’s game through content and joy. Football content is always better when it is coming from footballers! Forever our Sammy Bananas!! 🍌❤
Oh Sam you made me cry. I am so happy to support you in all your endeavors. So thrilled Lighting Lynn will be partnered with you once again. Thank you for all you have done for women's soccer and grateful to have experienced The Tower Of Power in all her Glory. God bless, onwards towards awesomeness.❤🤗🥂
If Sam and Mal are on that roster, we're having a different convo for 2023. Really missed her dominant play in midfield. Big fan Sam, you were amazing in 2019 and I'll never forget how awesome you were in that final. A certified winner. The game will miss you. Looking forward to the next journey!!!!
😭😭👆😭👆 Sam talking about crying is making me cry. 2019 was the greatest performance by a team in modern history and Sam was a big part of that. Thank you! Courage! Onward!
I think about this with professional athletes often, the story behind the story that doesn't get told is that going hard on your body like professional athletes do does in fact often have long term effects on the body. And those stories don't get told enough. CTE, knee problems, etc. At some point, one has to advocate for themselves in terms of long term quality of life. We romanticize the glory that sports brings, but it is a young person's game. At some point ya gotta make that call so you can live long without pain. Facts of life.
Congrats on an incredible career Sam, it was a pleasure watching you play for the USWNT. Best of luck on this new adventure, looking forward to listening to these upcoming podcasts!
You were truly one of my All-Time Favorite USWNT Players. Solid on and off the ball. LETHAL shot. TOWER OF POWER. So excited to continue following your journey!
My final season of college soccer I only played 4 games and had to drop out of school after my friends passed away in a car accident. That break lead me to dive into my art and start a new life. It’s a tough adjustment but time really does help put everything into place. Wishing you all the best in this next chapter Sam! Loved watching you play all these years, SNACKS 4EVER!
Having only started following the USWNT since the last Cup, I feel lucky to have run across this. Looking forward to the new podcast, Sam. What emotionally struck me most was the discussion of loss. In the last month I chose to leave motorcycling after more than 20 years. The intense focus, practice, friendships and community in riding asphalt racetracks leaves me with the same feelings as I wonder, Now What? I hope to find a lead soon, just as you have. I look forward to getting to know each guest and, as a result, women's football. And I'm looking forward to attending matches this coming season 🥳
Congratulations on the new show!! Sending much love and blessings from Singapore!! ALWAYS a big fan of USWNT -- Inspiring women with grit, beauty and brains! ❤️
Always been a fan of Sam Mewis on the soccer field and I became an even bigger fan after finding the Snacks podcast. I'm sad for her that her soccer career ended early, but she was able to bring so much joy to the fans lives...all while she struggled through a difficult time of her own. An amazing human being... that's Sam Mewis. And she's going to do GREAT things with The Women's Game. Looking forward to it all and good luck with that office endurance!
Looking forward to the show and the great collaboration with Lynn! Always enjoyed "Snacks" and it was an honor to watch you play throughout your career. Best of luck with the exciting new chapter of your life, we all know you will excel at it.
And..... Im subscribed! While many of us are sad youll never take the pitch again, you being in the MiB network fulltime is fantastic for the soccer community! You're work with Rog in the womans world cup was fantastic! Courage...and Chomp Chomp :)
Can’t wait to listen Sam! Congrats on a truly beautiful career, you inspired so many and were always one of my favorite midfielders to watch! You were amazing on Snacks and I’m so happy we’ll continue to hear from you and get your perspective on games and everything! ❤️
I'm so thrilled to hear you'll be hosting on the MIB network! I enjoyed hearing you explain why you made time for your HS team -- as someone whose playing days ended after HS, I still look back fondly on those times!
I am so glad that I found women's football. Subscribed and looking forward to the growth of the game, as well as the success of this channel. Much love and respect for you Sam.
It is so unfortunate you have to leave the game you have loved for so long and as a fan there is deep sadness in not seeing you on the pitch! The silver lining is the joy of your continued pod casting career! What a Bonus you get to work with Lynn! Huge Thank you to Men in Blazers!!!
Out of all of what y'all discussed, I want you to get good at drumming and join a band the most. I just got my first practice pad, so hopefully we both become epic drummers. #WomenDrummersRock
I'm sad that you are having to retire from soccer. However, I'm glad that you have the path to continue growing the Women's game. I'm having an okay time with this opportunity like this. I'll still chomp!
Sad you had to retire, echoing others, thrilled you have the new job! Smart to retire at this time, quality of life when you age is vital. I worked hard physical jobs during my 20-40's, the damage done to my body comes alive everyday almost in my 50's and turning 60. Old sprained ankle from my 20's, back injuries from 30 years ago, knees omg ran track was in Army and no sitdown jobs means chronic advil use and limited movement. There is a price so smart decision. Rest well with it and embrace the change and the excitement it brings.
so heartbroken to hear this, i was hoping against hope for your triumphant return to USWNT, but hearing you talk, it's so clear that this is less of a 'decision' and more of an acceptance of the reality of the situation. wishing you every happiness and success in the next chapter, and looking forward to the MIB podcast. you're such a natural, your world cup commentary got me through that heartbreak, seriously i would just turn off the tv volume and listen to you and rog and crack up. AND SO PSYCHED to hear that you're playing drums! i'm also a drummer and will 100% come give you a lesson or just jam with you ANY time, ANY DAY! everyone (especially women!) should play drums, there would be no strife or conflict in the world if we all did. you're gonna be a beast on those skins! *chomp!*
After the fact... At 2019 World Cup, Sam statistically was the best player. When adding up every metric: passes completed, loose balls gained, assists, defensive stops, etcetera, she out points everyone from every team.
What a mix of emotions to navigate! I'm so sorry AND congratulations. Selfishly, I'm so SO excited that you and Lynn will continue 'casting together! QUESTION tho- I can't find "The Women's Game" as its own podcast; are we meant to subscribe to the "Men in Blazers" podcast? I prefer listening on TH-cam anyhow, but I thought other fans might have the same question. Wishing you the best!
Thanks Rebecca. For the time being each episode in podcast format will release on Thursday on the Men in Blazers podcast feed. You’ll be able to find the videos every Thursday on TH-cam as well :)
I've been a huge fan of Sam n the 2019 team. I am also interested in what is happening in womens game across the pond because it seems like they are caught up. Will you be covering the womens game beyond U.S.?
I am sorry that your career playing came to an ending not of your own doing. I am happy that you will still be involved in the sport in another capacity. I wish you the best of luck and you will smash it moving forward....
Sam retiring is a huge loss for the game. Not just the US squad. The entire game. There is no one like her in the midfield. Her size, her strength, her striking ability, her field IQ, everything. It's a big loss! But, I know she's going to crush the next phase just like she did on the pitch! I'm really looking forward to this channel!!
I’m very sorry that you are having to retire. It must be a very difficult situation to be in. There’s no doubt that you will ace this new role, however, and I wish you every success. It would be fantastic to have Christine Sinclair on. I find that some commentators and podcasters seem to neglect some amazing Canadian players, particularly Synci.
Get Alex Scott on for an interview. A plus is she knows Boston having been a Breaker. And she knows both sides of the game being an elite player and now a strong presenter.
Sam so happy for your new adventure, but, boy was I sad to see you announce retirement. Had to happen I guess, but surely you know you will be missed. Carry On.

Whilst of course saddened by the news, I'm very excited to be seeing more of you than ever, even if it's not in a football kit. ❤
Absolutely gutted, but will follow you on your next chapter! All the best Sam!

Going through a similar situation. Thank you Sam❤
So sorry to hear that, Sam. From my European perspective, you were the best player of your generation in that US midfield post the World cup win.

TWG Let's Go!!
Sam is a legend ❤
We love you Sammy Bananas ❤
Good luck with all of your future endeavours, Sam
I have a question - do you plan to have 99ers on the show?
Get Alex Scott on for an interview. A plus is she knows Boston having been a Breaker. And she knows both sides of the game being an elite player and now a strong presenter.
If you can get Rachel Daly, Ella Toone, or Mary Earps on at some point. Thanks....
good for you .plenty of experience of the womens game youll sell it well
The best to do it.
Well I’m so sorry, it’s such a fucking bummer, but also very excited for this.
Sam you need to work the drumsticks into your broadcast. It's what any drummer would do (constantly tapping on stuff). Blue skies ahead! Best wishes!
thank you scrappy doo
This hurts so much.
Sam so happy for your new adventure, but, boy was I sad to see you announce retirement. Had to happen I guess, but surely you know you will be missed. Carry On.
I just finished watching and I can't wait anymore I'm going to sleep until the 25th.
Bye.
