This happens with every Zen generation. Bad value initially due to the enticing prices of the two-year-old CPUs, but once that stock is liquidated and new gen prices dip below MSRP, the new generation offers better value.

I wouldn't knock efficiency to hard. Instead of pulling an Intel and just cranking up the juice, they're making better chips that, while the may perform about the same as the 7xxx's are doing so with less power. That's a technological win in my book.

They are extremely efficient. They are just tuned for low power comsumption out of the box, it does not mean that it cant be set to higher power. Set them to the same limit of 142w ppt, and they have way more performance, and it gets 23000-25000 points in cinebench r23, which is not bad at all. As a laptop gamer, this trend of power efficiency with the 9000 series and the 4060 makes me happy. The days where laptop components have half the performance of desktop components are almost over.
Also even for a desktop, it's nice to have a more power efficient chip. It means lower temps, easier to cool, lower fan noise, your room doesn't heat up like an oven, your electricity bill is lower, and you're saving the planet (jk).
Power efficiency is a very underrated quality of life feature.

in comparison to an incremental intel generation, this is great. at least some difference in performance is good, but honestly having a much lower tdp chip is really nice. maybe we can pair a 9900x with a low profile cooler now, which we couldnt do with the 7900x. not to mention getting that as well as a lower price is just a nice bonus. i think of the 9000 series like the gpx 2. not an upgrade but more of an update.

Did the calculator lied to me? And if not
What cpu would you recommend to pair my gpu with?

The benchmarks in Linus's test bench made the 9000 CPU and is better in some games but not in productively like blender where the i9 14900k is a master. The cpu also draws less power and less temperature.

Its not bad at all ! Its good to lower power consumption some time ! Cost less in electricity, less heat and you can overcloock more (from heat perspectives).
If they didnt ever lower tdp there gonna do an intel thing were you are at 500 watt for a 95degres cpu with a 360aio

I feel like people need to give the benchmarks on these new cpus a bit of breathing room. Power managment / consumption seems to be a problem with current gen cpus. Imo a getting simular figures with more efficiencies. It builds a solid foundation for future tech. And looks to me like there leaving power on the table because people cant leave anything "standard" these days.
