German POWs in the USSR

  • German POWs in the USSR during and after World War II endured severe hardships. Captured in vast numbers, particularly after the Battle of Stalingrad and subsequent Soviet offensives, these prisoners faced brutal conditions in Soviet labor camps. They were subjected to hard labor in industries such as mining, construction, and logging, often in harsh climates with inadequate shelter, food, and medical care.
    Mortality rates were high due to malnutrition, disease, and overwork. The Soviet Union used these POWs as a critical labor force to aid in post-war reconstruction. Conditions gradually improved after Stalin's death in 1953, and repatriation of German POWs increased.
    The last German POWs were released in 1956, over a decade after the war ended. The experience left deep scars and was a somber chapter in the broader narrative of World War II's aftermath, highlighting the prolonged suffering of war prisoners long after the conflict had ceased.

    German POWs were captured upon the soil of a foreign country that they had invaded. A country with a government with which their own government had signed a non-aggression pact with.
    A country within which, by all accounts except those produced or favoured by, they had behaved as disgracefully as their Japanese allies had in Asia.
    German POWs suffered immensely. But they were not declared by their captors to be ‘untermenschen’, subhumans, fit only to be starved to death. Or subjected to the tender mercies of ‘doctors’ whose sole peers in the annals of obscenity were their Japanese allies, Dr Shiro Irishii’s Unit 731.

    It is also to be mentioned that the prisoners weren't that usefull and actually cost the soviets more money that they were actually worth (in labor). The only reason they were freed was due to negotiations with Konrad Adenauer.

    You forgot to mention.... Stalingrad pows were already on the brink of the long sleep...so not surprising many were gone b4 making it to pow camps.... conversely USSR pows started off relatively healthy....and then what happened?just to add context is all 👍

    • @tylerclayton6081

      USSR prisoners didn’t really start off relatively healthy. They were poorly supplied to begin with. And most of them were taken prisoner after being encircled and cut off for some time

      @tylerclayton6081 "Our doctors and nurses are doing everything possible to save them, but many are too far gone. They collapse as they try to lift a piece of bread to their mouths. Their bodies, exhausted by hunger and cold, are unable to accept food."
      Vasily Grossman
      Western narratives, especially during the Cold War, often emphasized Soviet brutality while downplaying Nazi war crimes against Soviet POWs. This selective memory contributed to a distorted view of history.

    • @MrSlugny
      @MrSlugny 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @tylerclayton6081 By contrast, Nazi Germany’s treatment of Soviet POWs was deliberate genocide. The "Hunger Plan" called for millions of Soviet prisoners and civilians to be starved to death to free up resources for Germans. Soviet POWs were either shot en masse, worked to death, or left to die in open-air camps. The difference between logistical failures on the Soviet side and intentional extermination on the German side is crucial.
