A frequently skipped upon fact is that the invasion of Scily started through packing a buttload of Ships filled to the brim with equipment and personell in Malta. More specifically it is said that there were so many ships between Malta (main island) and Gozo (sister island) people could walk the distance hopping from one vessel to the next. At least so I ve heard (Maltese National)
      Edit: spelling

The submarine that took "Martin" to the coast has its own hilarious history. The Seraph took part in an operation to recover a French general from occupied France, however being that he was French he would not stand to be rescued by the English. Being clever industrious people the English sent a note to the US that their sub was going to be under the command of an American desk clerk working in the US embassy in London. So they acquired a US flag, repainted the boat to look less British, and spent a couple days teaching the American commands to shout to the crew.
Once the Frenchman is on board the rest of the crew begins forcing American accents which had mostly been copied from watching John Wayne in the theaters.
So yeah a submarine captained by a man who has no clue what he's doing full of Brits going "Hello pilgrim" just to get a French general across the Channel.

The thing about the canister floating always surprised me. When we’d intercept a drug boat we’d often shoot it full of 50BMG (after everybody and all of the drugs were off of it) only to find that it wouldn’t sink. We would set them on fire with very mixed results. The only thing that worked all the time was to use the ship-to-ship fire monitor to fill it with water and sink it.

The Man Who Never Was is a great film about Operation Mincemeat. The language is a bit older and if memory serves its not in colour, so watching it takes a little bit of effort today, but all the little details are in there, such as making sure only the right peoples' finger prints are on the documents and everything.

  • @brianfuller7691

Capt. William Martin was a hero and an incredible true story. The success of the ruse was questioned but it's planning and execution were brilliant. The fact that Operation Mincemeat was always part of a larger scheme became significant.

Mister Brushwood, I am a calligrapher and I would happily get your fingernails and turn them into nibs for calligraphy. Nails are tough and, when treated properly with preservatives and used with good ink and paper, they'll do just as well as steel and gold nibs. Albeit more macabre, which is up my alley.
Seriously, it works. I've used branches, animal bones, my own fingernails. They work as calligraphy instruments.

One of the -in my opinion- funniest things during the WW2 is that Sicily, as well as other Italian's regions, have had a lot of people moving to the U.S. for work. So, families had sons and daughters in the States. That plus a general discontent with Mussolini has lead Sicilians, and pretty much a lot of Italians in the rest of the South Italy, helping the allied troops by offering food, showing them around to the ports and stuff, shelters ecc.
So, really. Landing on Sicily was the best option for the allies in so many obscure and "funny" ways.

Quick question. Are you sure the homeless person killed himself with Rat poison?
Rat poison is nearly harmless to humans except in huge quantities due to the fact that it's composition is not a "poison" per say but a mixture of blood thinner and fiberglass. It kills rats and mice because they squeeze through very tiny spaces perforating the stomach lining and causing physical damage to the organs, however for humans who do not do that it may just cause uncomfortable bowel movements.

It's the first Catfish! There's no way you could do this cleanly today with things like google image search and internet wayback machine. Some dead guys party pictures from instagram would show up and completely ruin the immersion.

You know, you don't have to be dead to carve one of your fingernails into a dip-pen. It worked for Inspector Gadget.

Well boys, this was an excellent show, one of my favourites by far, but you know they've run out of content when they're hashing out this old story for clicks. Not a diss Brian I love everything you do and you have produced some great stuff, always growing and changing with the times. Godspeed to the next innovation.
