    school doesn't test intelligence it tests your ability to remember things.

    • @jonathoncampbell845
      @jonathoncampbell845 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Intelligence is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills. By definition there is a need for intelligence to remember things and thereby school does test knowledge as you must first acquire the information and then apply it to the exam questions under limited time. So really, your argument has no basis.

    • @raylyons
      @raylyons 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      school doesnt test your ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills ,it simply tests how much information it can stuff into your brain.You are never given the chance to make your own conclusion or offer your own opinion, they may ask for your conclusion or opinion in a test but truly they will only accept what they agree with, if its not what their conclusion or opinion is then its simply wrong and you fail.

    • @jonathoncampbell845

      Lyonzeh That is completely wrong. In studying the 2nd Indochina War, students are encouraged to develop their own thesis as long as it can be corroberated with facts and historiography. Thus students could have entirely different views and still both attain full marks. In some subjects such as maths, there is simply only one true answer but for those subjects where answers are subjective, there is definitely room for individuality if your thesis is logical and can be supported.

      Lyonzeh And there we have it, the guy that disapproves of the schooling method, unable to back up his arguments. The irony is, this displays exactly why school does actually improve your intelligence.

    Definitely agree! Do you remember a time in school where you were doing well in one class and then poorly on another? The answer is simple: just like he said in the interview; in the class you were doing good, you were being taught in your own preferred learning style. On the other class(es) you were perhaps being "forced" to learn in the preferred learning style of the person that was teaching you. If anybody is interested in learning and I hope most of you are, for the simple fact that life becomes more exciting and with a feeling of tremendous accomplishment. I would definitely recommend a book/audiobook titled: Accelerated Learning Techniques by Brian Tracy and Collin Rose. It has truly helped me understand a lot of the psychology of true learning and how you can learn anything you truly desire much more effectively! Give it a shot you don't lose anything and gain so much more! Wish you all great prosperity!

    I agree that exams don't cater to individualism! We are all different, and so, we all learn differently! It's like having a person with a height of 5ft and person with a height of 7ft participate in a test which involves them looking over a 6ft fence! - It's not practical and simply not fair!

    I'm completely with Suli on this but one thing I think should be added is that wisdom should be taught in schools. Exams test memory and how much you paid attention. That's it. Youths need to be encouraged to question things, analyse things, put their imagination into practise, debate opinions and philosophical morality. They should be taught the importance of respect and community. I did badly in my exams because I spend most of my time day dreaming about ideas I had. I was fairly dumb in school, but I learned to become open minded and questioned things and learned to think originally and outside of the box. Youths aren't taught any of this important stuff when they're copying off a whiteboard into a book like robots. Exams are supposed to get you into further education for more qualifications which if you gain or not, is to get a better job. But I've had plenty of job interviews and no-one has asked about my results. And even if they did, I became far more intelligent AFTER I gained qualifications.

    I'm about to get my GCSE results tomorrow and i have not stopped worrying about this moment the whole holiday. In school I did the homework and the class work and the course work, and teachers were extremely satisfied with what I had done. But as soon as it came to some exams on some subjects my levels dropped. I find it completely unfair and so fucking frustrating that I had that beacon of hope that I would succeed but whenever it came to certain tests I didn't do as well. I studied and tried, I tried so hard, yet nothing was ever good enough. I just hope the education system changes for the future generations, because the pressure of exams is such a degrading thing to go through.
    I completely support was Suli has said through this interview and I can totally relate to it.

    All tests are is memory, thats it. If I could remember every fact of science in the world then does that make me clever? No. We should be given the facts and asked to actually apply that knowledge to something to prove we understand it and grasp it. Currently as long as the answer is on the paper, you have are correct, even if you have no knowledge of how it works

    • @Ledgernator
      @Ledgernator 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You said at the beginning of that comment "if I could remember every fact of science in the world does that make me clever" giving the assumption you think that remembering the facts is irrelevant but then you state later that you should be taught to analyse the facts, how can one analyse facts they don't know. Education and knowledge is a series of building blocks and without information, that is usually quite important to know, how can anybody be expected to build upon that and learn the analysis and application of the subject. Realistically tests are a test of knowledge and intelligence and there is no way to change that. Imagine learning lots about the solar system for example and the formation of stars and then in the assessment (which is a must, grades are a must otherwise there is no motive) not being asked about what you learnt. How does that work? What else can they be tested on about the subject then what the subject contains which is obviously going to be about remembering and knowledge. Honestly some people need to think of better solutions before they try to make a revolution. If anybody disagrees with what I have to say fair enough but at least suggest a solution or otherwise what you state is invalid

      about 400 lines there mate, havent got time to read that. Test are about memory, period. Thats why most peopledont come out of an exam and say "damn I didnt understand it", they say "damn I forgot that, now I remember"

    • @Ledgernator
      @Ledgernator 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's cool that you didn't read my ramble and yes you make a good point but remembering stuff and being able to obtain and store knowledge is necessary for a lot of the jobs in which the high grades require etc. Doctor, Scientist and Lawyer.

    • @ggzii
      @ggzii 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ledger
      There is nothing wrong with people needing memory, obviously it helps! But to judge the nation purely on memory or atleast a HUGE chunk seems a bit 1900's

    • @Ledgernator
      @Ledgernator 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Except how can one learn a whole subject of trigonometry and not be tested on what they spent half a year learning because if it was tested on that and applying that in a test that is a lot of memory (maths requires slightly more comprehension and understanding then other subjects but still). The only way to test them on math that doesn't depend on memory is math skill questions and then the whole term of trig would seem wasted. On a side note I think if people want to succeed in tests stop sooking and just study. The fact that memory plays a part and studying is so significant instead of sheer intelligence means that those who aren't the smartest kids can try their best and achieve. Good life morals.

    I agree totally with what you're saying. It frustrates me so much when there is someone so intelligent and often genius in their own area and they are made to feel often worthless in our society simply because they dont measure up to the same intelligence as the minority that benefit greatly from it. I also dont appreciate how our society condemns the more hand working jobs (say builders) in favour of academics. There is genius in every area and unfortunately only 1 main one is really being appreciated and taught right now as 'the best'.

    • @evanurena8868

      That is because the board of education would rather blame everything on the students and teachers for not following their insipid forceful standardized one size fits all lesson plans rather then find a way to take action to change that fallacy and make education more multidimensional and practical. Little do they realize that they fail to see their own laziness because they continue to only implement one mundane and repetitive standard.

    Im currently in the midst of studying for my A level exams and I am completely lacking motivation. I try my hardest but the bottom line is exams are not an accurate measure of Intelligence. For my GCSE's I was constantly being lectured about how if I don't do well in my exams I would have a good life. I studied for about 6 hours a day and left school with c's and b's yet some of my friends who did nothing at all got better grades than me. When I got my results my heart sank and now I feel like theirs no point. It is virtually impossible to test someone on two years worth of learning in an hour.

    Being in high school, this couldn't be better. Taking tests on something I don't want to do doesn't make sense. So why should I have to suffer through high school knowing my passion but not being able to pursue it. I recently took the practice ACT. I like astronomy and not a single question about astronomy was on this test. And I also realize that if I do bad on this test, they will skip over not thinking twice about the kind of person I could be.

    I just find it ridiculous that the entire world is ran on result of exams. I have a shit memory but I clever, always the top grades but when it comes to the exam, I fail to remember formulas for A level maths, or a certain rule. Give me the formual and I will do all the questions correctly but just because I have a shit memory I failed the exam. Same way I did media studies, the entire time it was working in groups, boucning ideas from eachother, I was on the best and bringing the best out of other people, but that doesn't matter because the exam was me sat alone at a desk for 2 hours. So when I go to get a job, I can't say "I'm good with other people" because all they see are my grades, that's all they care about, there is no proof off my skills other then that grade on the paper

    I can get good grades on homework and reports, yet when it comes to exams, and i fail, its really bullshit that one test puts you in summer school and having to repeat a class. I think you shouldn't be determined just because of a quiz, but how hard you try and how much you participate to try and pass the class. Anyone else agree?
    Because no one that I have ever spoken to that has a job has ever had to sit alone and try to pass a test to determine if they keep their job or not. You keep your job by showing up and doing what you know your supposed to be doing.

    I'm one of those people who just loves to write - poems, stories, speeches; anything really! - and I love to get creative... But I'm starting my GCSEs this year and there's none of that. All we do is learn a topic, do a test on it and fill in endless past paper questions. All teachers want to talk about is the exam. There's no time for debating different points of view or discussing the lesson thoroughly because the teachers are so stressed about not falling behind and staying on schedule that they plough through the lessons and dump homework on us..... And honestly, it sucks. It just makes me want to give up.

    • @user-ub8oi7oh3r

      There's actually a lot of that. If you take GCSE English its two parts, one is analysing and one is language/writing. Don't come to conclusions, British schools are much better than the American crap ones. And if you like writing you have to learn about punctuation and language techniques.

    • @cat5220
      @cat5220 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been doing my GCSEs now for 6 months and in all that time I've written about 6 creative pieces in English Language. The same teacher takes us for both Literature and Language, and basically all of class time goes to Literature and writing essays, and it's awful. We have to stick to this method and if you go outside of it you pretty much automatically fail. I thought English Language was going to be amazing, and then I discovered multi-modal texts. What soul-destroying stuff that is.

    She cannot relate because she is about 40-45 years old. Truth is even in America we are on this system and IQ test judge who is intelligent or who is not. How do you measure someones intelligence on a simple test when that test in calculus or trig. does not fully apply to a career in in anything but a math teacher or engineer. I say this because I know friends who are going to be Fire Fighters but they must know these high level maths to obtain a degree. Tell me how is that fair to someone more than willing to get burned but instead their future is.

      Arthur Miller III It is ridiculous and it is all just a money scheme for the elite to keep you from being prepared for the real world so that way they have less competition to deal with in the future. They have the audacity to tell us on high school graduation that they did their job to prepare us for college and the real world when they never did that in the first place. If you keep telling us that high school graduation is an entrance to the real world and young adulthood, why didn't you help us prepare for that in the first place. I could not even take any of their speeches seriously because everything that came out of their mouths were nothing but contradictions and phoniness. They did not give two shits about us, all they wanted was the money to fund their pointless extracurricular activities and sports programs. What a waste of time.

      My teacher also says how difficult it is to measure intelligence and that even iq tests don't. Why? Because the more you practice them, the better you get! So it's not really measuring your intelligence is it?!

    • @vincinni1
      @vincinni1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sophie K No. It's measuring your ability to retain information at that point. Kind of funny you mention that because someone said they had an IQ of 143. My response was, "How many times did it take you to get those results?". Intelligence cannot be measured in a linear way because it is somewhat like love. It varies depending on the situation you are in. You may be an electrician and me a medical doctor. In a situation where you must know how to rewire a light fixture my intelligence is irrelevant and unneeded unless someone gets shocked in the process of changing the wires. Everyone is intelligent in their own way and at various times but we all make unintelligent decisions because it makes us human (human error).

    Different people have different learning styles. Each person learns in their own way, has differing interests and abilities.
    In school, over 30 years ago, I was told my ambitions were stupid. I was told I was stupid because I was terrible at maths and English, yet I was very keen and good at history.
    Years later and my children have all been told the same thing. My one child was brilliant at reading and maths. School decided she was clever and piled all this pressure on her. The result was her love of learning vanished.
    One child has learning disabilities and autism and school refused to see this and called her stupid, and me a bad parent. She received no support at school.
    None of my kids have used their exam results
    I have one child left in school and he hates the place. His reading and writing are, according to school, behind the average.
    Schools are constantly comparing you to others standards and tell you you must be good at this that and the other. Where is the space for being yourself and being able, and encouraged, to excel in your own choices and subjects?

All they do is copy paste from the internet and get d* and shit yet they haven't really learned anything. So i agree we have to see it as an individual thing instead of collective thinking

    School needs to be a mix between the current system and apprenticeships. There's a lot of real life practical skills that school does not prepare you for and this can't be taught in a measly 2 week experience.

    Sometimes exams are worth between 50% - 70% of your total grade. That's the problem. They should still exist and not be eradicated... I'm a Suli fan, glad to see him doing well.

    • @evanurena8868
      @evanurena8868 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is an excellent point. I discussed this with my brother the other day and he agreed. Nearly every class I have been to, Exams were always weighed more than anything else. Even if you excel in homework, and do bad on even one exam you could still fail. Why is it that traditional in class exams are worth so much of your grade when you can do well other areas such as research and homework. It never made sense to me. To regurgitate everything and dump it all at once to an in class exam. It is futile and one of the major flaws of the education system besides the letter grading scale.

    • @ADAJ3KINGANGEL

      Maybe a type of auditioning system? I imagine to work in the engineering industry you'd work on a cheap, basic machine or something and assessed in that way. This would make assessments more practical and less linear and memory-based.

    Im 28, i have always wanted to be a journalist ever since I was 14, but instead I'm almost homeless and also jobless only because I did what my parents told me to do (get a masters degree in law and enforcement) and that hasn't got me nowhere in life, education is not always important, it is only to an extent...I have friends who do not even know there time tables up to 10 and believe me they are living a life of luxury and enjoying life because they didn't make decisions by following what there parents told them to do that they'd refer life me, on the other hand I have friends who have a degree related to what they wanted to work as and guess what? They are jobless like me, I'm happy for my friends who are uneducated and still working in a field they wanted to work in at least there life is not shit like mines...hopefully mines will change since I'm getting a loan from the bank and opening a takeaway near a college, all I want to say is FOLLOW YOUR OWN DREAMS NOT YOUR PARENTS WANTS.

    School, not education as such, is hell for introverted people. And the more introverted someone is the more school is hell to them. For such people, who by the way are on much higher level of intelligence and development than extroverted people, I recommend homeschooling. One should realise that teachers, and especially women teachers, subconsciously hate introverted students, especially boys. Parents of introverted children should take into serious consideration homeschooling their children.

    • @jacobstark9614
      @jacobstark9614 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Let me tell you something kid. You don't have ADHD. Your mind works differently than others - and not necessarily in a 'special kid' way. ADHD is a fabricated condition invented by adults and doctors too incompetent to understand that not everyone in the world thinks and learns the same way.
      In Sir Ken Robinson's famous TED Talk, he mentioned the case of Gillian Lynne - the choreographer for the musicals Cats and Phantom of the Opera.
      She was 'diagnosed' with ADHD when she was a young girl and when her mother took her to the doctors, the doctor made her sit in her hands and switched on the radio, while he talked to the girls mother outside the room.
      After about a minute, Gillian got up and started dancing to the radio. The doctor turned to the mother and said: "there is nothing wrong with Gillian. She's just a dancer".
      So you, my friend - although you may not be a dancer - have nothing wrong with you. You don't have ADHD. All you have is a society who is incapable of giving you an education system which allows you to fully profit from it.

    Speaking towards the part of the video where the woman was siding with the exam system because of future applications with jobs, school is used as a medium to learn and to educate not to train for certain specific jobs. I would rather ,like suli said, want to have the knowledge about a certain subject and be able to use that knowledge in a practical way or to actually understand a concept someone is teaching than to just memorize bits of information temporarily to take a test/exam. I do understand repetition helps people memorize information but does that necessarily mean that they understand it and can efficiently use the information a month, a few months, a year from then? Possibly, instead of having A system that caters to all we could have a group of systems for students with specific learning styles. A little like how some people learn by doing vs reading or watching ect. ect. Just a thought...
