Is Ceramic Window Tint Worth The Extra Cost?

  • A window tint update video. I cover the 3M Ceramic IR Series and compare it to the Color Stable in this non-scientific test.
I realize this isn’t a completely accurate way to measure, however. The heat on the door cards was pretty obvious which tint rejected heat more.

I live in Texas and just got driver & passenger window ceramic tint for my camaro about 3 weeks ago, the back and corner are regular tinted, windshield leave untouched but use the windshield covered instead because I was a little skeptical about ceramic price and if it is worth it compared to regular tint.
And let me tell you, with only driver & passenger window ceramic, the difference was night and day! Came out of 8hr working shift the car was significantly noticeable different compared to before. It is still hot, but a lot less humid and oven feeling, you can actually breathable in it, and doesn’t required to full blow the AC to cool the car down. Now I’m thinking about get my windshield tint OR replace the back windshield with ceramic instead of regular tint. If you live in hot state such as Texas, 100% get it.

I'd say 20% in Southern states is reasonable. (though with 35% ceramic tint, you'll get better heat reduction than normal 20% tint). But in Northern states, you are much better off getting 35% tint. You don't have as much sun, and its not as strong. Secondly, really dark tint can be a cop magnet. I've had 35% tint on my 2004 Solara and 2006 ES350 for years, and never had any issues with cops. But they look sharp, and the bonus is that I can see outside at night, no impairment in night vision, or seeing my side mirrors.

How long did you wait to test temperature? The window tint reduces the amount of heat transmitted, but that really just slows the heating of the car, it does not limit the interior temperature . If you let any car with any tint sit outside they will all get hot.

    Recommended tint percentages:
    Mom level tint-20% all around
Dark but never pulled over- 5% rears, 20% front
Perfect dark but chance of getting pulled over (what i’m running and have been stopped once) - 5% rear, 20% fronts, 35% front windshield.
PS if your thinking about windshield tint and want privacy do 35%. The 50% is nice for heat but will not be anywhere close to enough darkness for any sort of privacy reasons

It's hard to try and measure tint temps when the car is just baking in the sun. Ceramic will slow down the transfer of heat coming in to the vehicle but if your car sits at work all day in the sun yes it gets very hot.
If the heat is removed from the vehicle and it's fully tinted in Ceramic you will notice it will stay cooler vs a car that has carbon because it will be passing more heat through the carbon film. You won't have to have the AC blasting as much to keep a vehicle cool with ceramic film. Also your skin and interior parts will remain cooler over a carbon or dyed film.

interesting and enjoyable video .. cheers.
The scientist in me wants to point out a couple of things, even though it's an old video now and the guy did say he knows it wasn't done very "accurate".
I think he meant to say it wasn't done very "precise" i.e. comparing the results in each car may not have been a true reflection of the actual because of the many variables and inconsistencies introduced in his experiment. We don't know how "accurate" his meter was because it wasn't calibrated, but probably +/- 5% at a guess for everything he measured.
Measuring the temperature surfaces in each car made it hard to compare the results, because the shape, position, colour, thickness, coating etc. and what it's actually made of will all impact the temperature of the surface almost as much as the amount of heat getting through the windows, especially if the difference between the amount getting through is only a few degrees.
Where and how your cars were parked, in relation to the sun position, the other car,, the garden bed, the road etc introduced many uncontrolled variables.
Ambient temperature is really what you wanted to measure because that's what we all feel i.e. the air temperature inside the car.
I think all things being equal it was a good video though, and reflected (pun intended) a reliable outcome, albeit not that "precise".

See what they offer for shades. They’ll usually have different levels of films on a poster hanging on the back wall. Usually 5, 15,20,50,70 etc. If 15% is available then say “ I would like 15% ceramic film on windows except windshield. “
They might say, “well your back windows have tint from the factory, tinting on top would make it more like 10% or 8% etc it could be harder to see when backing up at night “

    • @eddiemcars
      @eddiemcars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It depends on where you live and how aggressive the cops want to be with enforcing it. Usually, it’s a ticket IF they choose to stop you, but the majority of them won’t go out of their way for it. Ohio is the only state I’ve lived in where they will take out a light meter and measure the tint. (50% max is allowed on the front)
Here in California, where no tint is allowed on the front side windows, they don’t seem to bother.
For a Grand Cherokee, the rear is tinted already from the factory, so 20% front side will nearly match the rear glass with the front appearing slightly lighter from certain angles because of the clear windshield. My personal opinion is that you’ll be OK with 20% on the front sides.

While the vehicles may be different, the glass construction is the same.
Same year model year, same M variant, and very similar merino leather. The interior space is different, I agree, but in the end, I took the heat from the door card itself, where the sun was directly hitting since interior heat can vary. Even sitting inside and having the sun shooting your face through the glass, there’s a notable difference with ceramic film. I implied in my video and the description that it's non-scientific, but I attempted it the best way possible with the tools I had on hand.

I let both cars sit outside for an hour right when the glass begins to heat up. My thought was any more than that, becomes a wash and hot car becomes a hot car. I found the best result shooting at glass from the inside and hitting the dashboard and upper door cards. I got the same result on the dash, but it’s expected considering both cars have same ceramic film on the windshield. The door cards is where I noticed the difference in temperature since the side films vary and the challenge was showing what I physically feel on my skin sitting inside.

@PeterJames143 I know it's been a year since your comment, so hopefully you've now learnt what "inversely proportional" means, because you most certainly cannot say (or even make the argument) that the exterior temp is inversely proportional to the interior temp.
The inside and outside temps both went up (so they're not inversed) and they didn't go up at the same rate or equal factor of a rate, so they're not proportional either. So in fact, the inside outside temp relationship is "directly disproportional" and that's something I would argue about.
Sorry, but I'd hate for you to go through life using the term incorrectly... somebody had to tell you, and better me then embarrassing yourself in front of bunch of good looking smart mean girls... imagine that ... crikey
