  • Part three of the WOOD Magazine walking stick. The bottom half of the shaft and the foot. One of my all time favorite turning projects. The plans are available from WOOD magazine here;

    Really nice. Made my 1st with the threaded inserts. And yes, they are a booger to do. But I got lucky and got them close enough to get the stick pretty straight by more tightening.
    Good series. Thanks for the good tips

    Really good! I just made a stick last month, and it would have been good to have seen some of your tricks before I did that! I have a short-bed lathe and had to make the top and bottom each in two sections that glued together. I made 5/8" tenons 2" long for maximum strength. Also, I glued a 1/4" length of contrasting wood onto the end of the piece with the hole to receive the tenon in order to 'celebrate' the joints.
    By the way - your opinion of threaded inserts is right on!

    Liked the videos Steve, thanks for showing them. I would like to know where you got the steb center that you used in your chuck, unless it is just for it. I have a oneway stronghold chuck, which I have to remove to use my steb center with #2 mt. It gets old real fast, thanks.

      Joseph, first, I'd like to thank you for watching and then for taking the time to let me know you liked the videos. If you do a search for "spur drive" on Amazon you should find them.

      Joseph, I did a quick search before I responded to your OP and saw that so I ordered them as well. That's a good deal and about what I spent for the first one I bought by itself. A word of warning, the set screw can back out and the tip is spring loaded so it will pop out as well. Put a dab of CA glue or something on the screw to help prevent that.

    Loved the walking stick videos! Just one question why didn't you use the flat of your stock rather than a corner edge?

      Billy, thanks for watching and commenting. It's the camera angle. I agree with you that it looks like I'm using a corner but the piece is laying flat on the tool rest. I almost put a caption to make that clear but chose not to. Guess I should have after all.
