Thank you for this video! It provided good insight and I initially thought too that a top ranked school means better education but you made a good point, what we put in is what we get out of it. Some of the things you mentioned are similar to what one of the physical therapist/adaptive physical education instructor at the local junior college said to me as well. I interned in the Adaptive Physical Education last spring and what’s funny is I had a close friend of mine pushing me to look into Adaptive PE and first day of interning I fell in love with it and it was a life changing experience!! I was also looking into Athletic Training and I had done further research and talked with folks in that field, that’s when I decided to seriously consider physical therapy so that I could have more options/opportunities/and be able to work in a variety of settings. I’m in the process of completing my prerequisites.

so true!I got into USC, took a took at tuition per year after I applied and said NO thank you! I did end up going to a private school but one that's much cheaper and with a smaller cohort and couldn't be happier with the education I had. You learn the most by wanting to learn the most no matter how many letters follow the name of the professors who are part of the faculty.
I went to the #10 school on that list. I agree with you Tim. The most important part of PT is learning skills and providing value

First off, great video. I just wanted to add that when talking about the list of top programs, it is my understanding that it has mostly to do with how much research the program puts out, how many faculty members have PhDs and their accomplishments within the realm of research. At least that's what I was told. I completely agree that you can get a great education from just about any school if you committ yourself. That being said, I feel my school put a very heavy emphasis on research, and some schools that are not top 50 may be lacking this aspect.

So true! I worked as a tech during undergrad & I’m a physical therapy student now & honestly company’s don’t care where u got your degree from. Since essentially all PT programs teach u the same thing. Just completing the DPT program shows u are competent.
Passing the boards is the tell all - if a school has a low pass rate relative to other programs, I’d ask more questions before committing.
The US News and World report is not worthless. It all depends on what you want to do with your degree. If you just want to be a PT working in a clinic and making a difference in other peoples' lives then maybe it doesn't matter as much. BUT if you want to continue in academia, pursue your PhD or anything of that nature, those tops schools are there for a reason. They will have resources and connections which will help to advance your career (not that these will make you successful - only YOU can do that). Absolutely agree with your sub-point. Thanks for trying to help future PTs!
Hi Scott! Thanks for your insightful comment. I can agree that someone interested in research or academia might value this report as the data gathered from school to school shows how programs view the strength of other programs in terms of research and a few other metrics. But as you stated as well, the rankings aren’t going to matter as much (or at all in my opinion) for the everyday clinician. I value your input and contribution! Thank you!

Some great points about PT and I think every job has some drawbacks. Looking back on my DPT journey I could have picked a cheaper school! My loan is repaid now, but it was a hustle to get that done.

I feel relatively lucky, as I live in Delaware and would be able to go to the so-called “#1 Physical Therapy school in the country” for cheap. I hope that as I get closer to HS graduation, I find opportunities to shadow and see from a viewer-only perspective what being in the PT field is like.
Most of what you learn in PT school is the effort you put in yourself, regardless of program. Totally agree. I'm building a corrective exercise library if you are interested in subscribing!
I know this is advice I can trust because Ive been working in higher education for the past 10 years and the first point is something that can be applied to higher education in general. Tuition does not equal quality, it's about how much you put into it no matter what school you attend that really matters.

This video has helped thank you. I'm stuck at a dead end job for the longest! Part of it was my problem for not being mentally strong in life but now I'm getting myself together and taking the steps. But I feel sooooo behind like I'm doubting myself I'm in my thirties 😭😭 husband wants to have kids I also want to have kids but trying to put myself first I know may seem selfish. But I want be something more for myself you know? I'm frustrated because I'm just trying to get my foot in the door when applying to something that's in your field not something way out like where I'm at has nothing to do with medical field lol so I been debating since I've been here should I just do business?! Watching this video helped so I'll take that advice and shadow around someone but how do I even go about? Will they even take the time or am I wasting their time and not really help me?
Hi. As a new mom that I’m also trying to get back to school (I guess you can understand by me looking at the same video) I wanted to tell u to not postpone a child. The sad truth is that women have a biological clock and is better to have kids than wait, cuz a college you can do it at any time. But a child no. And motherhood is not that terrible as Americans make it , they complain and need a motivational coach for everything. When choosing a career consider first what u like. For example I don’t like to talk a lot and I’m looking into dental hygiene ( I’m a dental assistant) cuz I feel I don’t have to talk non stop or hear the patient talk non stop 😂, that’s me . Im starting physical therapy school in Norway. Just to say a little about myself: I love training, movement and activities is basically my life. I would hate to see people in general not doing things they love to do because of an injury or something like that. That is why i applied to physio school, so i can help people get on with rehabilitation and find new ways to work things out. Im in now and i love the school. The stuff we learn of the human body is interesting and amusing. But and there is a big but! The thing i dont like with this profession, is the hate it gets for not being science based and that it basically is useless. Im kind of in a ethical debate with myself when i see so many articles about physical therapy basically being a BS profession and it sqrews with my head. You will always have those people who critisizes everything, and you have the patients with the stories of their PT that changed their life, and their PT that basically did nothing to them other than taking their money. Im sure many other people see this problem as well and they decide to go to med school or something like that instead. But i am only after the truth of things. I dont like lying to people, i dont like not telling the truth and i certainly would not work as a physical therapist if the actual work doesnt work. So can you please give me a good reply, video or something like that so that i can get the truth. THx
Wow hearing about the prices of PT schools in the US is insane to me! Most institutions in canada charge 15,000cad for all three years and in usd it would only be 10,600!
Absolutely, becoming a great physical therapist doesn't necessarily require attending an expensive school. I completely understand your perspective. As an Italian physical therapist, you've experienced a comprehensive education in Rome, spending just 4,000 euros for a four-year program, followed by a master's degree costing 5,000 euros. This showcases that quality education can be affordable.
Physical therapy is indeed a continuous learning journey, heavily reliant on experience and ongoing education. The abundance of excellent online resources nowadays further enhances the learning process, allowing physical therapists to continually improve their skills.
The notion that expensive education equals better quality is a misconception. Education, especially in fields like physical therapy, is just the starting point. The top schools are usually expensive sadly. I shadowed a PT but it wasnt really busy but i suppose it's different if your employed/self employed.

I said this to my advisor and she straight up told me that janitors helps people, cafe workers helps people. She’s right! You need to know exactly why you want to be a PT.

Hey Ayesha! Thanks for your comment! Yes, if you're set on becoming a PT, the 3+3 programs can get you there faster and sometimes they're not super expensive. Some private programs are costly, but also, you are able to get out a year earlier and practice. Not saying that should lead you to justify spending an extra $60k on a 3+3 DPT program. You could also take summer courses, graduate from your undergrad a year or semester early, work and save 10-15k and apply that towards your living expenses in grad school. Lots of ways to look at saving money by accelerating your studies whether that's on your own or through a 3+3 DPT program.

I have a question for you. I live in Maine. And Husson University is known for its business and physical therapy programs. The average tuition is about 19k a year. They have a 6 year doctor of physical therapy program. The undergrad is exercise science and is sped up to 3 years instead of 4. So the total time I spend in school is 6 years around 18-19k a year. Does it sound like a good deal in terms of student debt? I love physical therapy. I've wanted to be one since 8th grade. Im finishing my junior year and can't wait to get to PT school.
When looking for a school, there are some that are capte accredited and some not, should the school be capte accredited? Does that matter?

I've done a lot of research on physical therapy and I have been talking to a physical therapist I know and just asking them some questions. I think this is something that I want to do. I watched your video on "What to Major in to become a PT?" And what I got was basically do what you love. I don't really have a specific passion though, but this job seems like something I would love to do. Anyways, do you have any advice for someone who hasn't yet attended college and is interested in becoming a PT?
The same can be said for ANY aspect of education... dollars, and prestige manner very little. It's what YOU put into it. I have graduate degrees & have taught at the university level. The most you might get from a high dollar school is placement, but big buck schools can have horse-sh*t placement, too.

I have a good friend who's become quite a successful Physio, working with Rapha-Condor (UK Olympic cycling team). I'm a collage drop out so I link to undermin and belittle his achivments by asking how his "chiropractic stuff" is going or by buying him crystals and reiki books for his birthday. Unfotunatly I'm not getting much of a reaction. Can you give me some pointers on what might annoy physiotherapists' the most?

You should volunteer now so that you get those credits for PT School. Each school is diff so do your research for the amount of hours you need to volunteer for.

I enjoyed your video and loved the insight! I’m currently working as a medical assistant. My goal was to pursue PA school but after working as an MA for some time I’m not so sure that PA is the right fit for me. I know I love science, I know I love the medical field and helping people but I’m not so sure the scope of being a PA is the right fit. I do love workouts whether targeted or general and I’ve always preferred a hands-on approach whether it’s learning or executing a task. My question is do you have more time with each patient versus in an MD/PA setting? Thanks!
Hi Daniella! Generally we do have the ability to spend more time with our patients. This is one of the reasons why PTs can make a great impact because we often have the time to teach people to do the exercises correctly and or explain things throughout a 30-60 minute session.

I'm a dance/fitness instructor and I'm interested in becoming an Aquatic Therapist but was told I needed to go back to school to become an PT first. I have no clue what to do as I only have a Associate dance degree and some certifications. So that means I would've to get my B.A first in order to enrolled into the PT program. I want to focus on Sports and Performing Arts (Physical therapy)
PTs are not Aquatic Therapists - that’s not really a title in this field. That said, you can work with people as a fitness instructor utilizing a pool without a PT degree. Honestly, you’d probably build up a bigger caseload of clients as an aquatics fitness instructor versus a PT who worked at a clinic that offered pool therapy. Not worth spending $100k or more for school to become a PT just to work with people in a pool in my opinion.
@@PTProgress Thank you for your feedback I really appreciate it. I want to focus on sports/performing arts physical therapy and incorporate Aquatic therapy. I did some research and found out I would need to be a PT with an unrestricted license in order to practice in that field. ( Sport PT & Performing Arts residency) Ughh idk what to do

I'm having pain from neck radiating down my back burning at times doctor is supposed to refer physical therapy I'm so desperate I can't take many meds and I got acid reflux I'm so desperate to seek help
I had a similar experience, went to doctor, chiropractor, acupuncture, but it was a gluten intolerance. Seems unrelated, but gluten caused swelling in my neck, which put immense pressure on my nerves. I knew after two weeks with a gluten free diet and I was pain free. It may be a pinched nerve or slipped disk for you, but a diet change is easy to try out and rule out if it didn't work.

Hi Tim, is PT hard on your own body? I have pain quickly, for example by standing for a long time (hypermobility)..
We stand most of the day and the work can be tiresome. We also spend a lot of time on the computer (standing and sitting) while we write notes. So posture awareness (even for PTs!) is important.

A DPT program is full time so when you say “slowly” are you thinking like a part time school thing? Getting an RN before DPT school isn’t necessarily helpful.

Swift Umbra That’s a good question. I think PTs have the education to understand proper form and exercise dosage, especially when it comes to avoiding or working through painful movements. While many PTs are relatively health / fit individuals, I would personally argue that your knowledge of fitness and rehab as a PT will not translate into motivation to go to the gym and do the work ;)
Your PT training will equip you to understand how to target specific muscles, specifically for rehabilitation. But further training in sports rehab and strength conditioning programs (through continuing education courses) will teach you even more of the research based approaches to exercise and rehab, which may be helpful for your own fitness if you’re motivated to do the exercises.

Hey Tim, I know you made this video two years ago but I need you advice. I applied to a PTA program (it costs only 10,000 at a local community college). I won’t know until January if I am accepted because they have a score sheet that determines who they accept. If I am accepted I will start in May next year. I’m currently working as a PT tech, have been for three months, what should I do in the mean time while I wait for an answer, and what should I do if I am NOT accepted? Thank you.
Hey Omar! I hope you get in! Until then, keep working, getting experience in physical therapy, and save money until school starts. If you don’t get in, the good news is that you still have a job, you can reapply, and if you want to find a different job, you have that option too. Be sure to follow up with the program and write them a letter reaffirming your interest and intent to attend and succeed. Good luck!

Pretty sure most require physics. Look for online physics courses or even a summer course with a community college

Tim Fraticelli - PTProgress thanks I’m very interested in the field of physical therapy and am trying to find out what I want to do whether it is in a clinic or home therapy. I am probably going to transfer to a different school after 4 years and getting my degree in health education but I’m just not sure what school I should go to after (I’m in Massachusetts).
I honestly feel like you’re glossing over the actual realities the world of therapy is facing right now. Yes you talked on some things to obviously consider before applying to school, but there are so many more aspects to it to know before you make the choice. If you want to experience ridiculous productivity levels, unstable/unpredictable hours, no raises (seriously, I’ve never received a raise working in therapy), little support from managers/corporate, tedious and overlong documentation, unpleasant atmosphere, little respect from other health care disciplines (hospital setting mainly applies here), unethical scenarios to get all of your minutes in with an inappropriate patient, little to no upward mobility, the constant fear of Medicare cuts and your therapy company not renewing their contract (especially now with the Covid pandemic), the amount of debt it takes and time which does not translate to an equal salary, then by all means go into PT/OT school.
PT is mostly 15 min of an actual therapist and the rest is aides who would rather be on Social Media then helping you. I’d rather go to Asia where I can pay experts to work on me then the US where it’s all about money
Is it demanded to pursue a masters degree?
I went to a state PT school, and sill got out with 100k in debt... ugh!
Does that include undergrad? I’d hate to see state PT school follow these private profiteers.
@@PTProgress Nope, but it does include living expenses. Also, they kept hiking tuition every single year. Maybe it had to do with the economics of the time 2009 -2012.
What aspects of physical therapy school do matter?
You're working right next to they went to an entirely different school than you, and that's a good thing. Just don't equate the quality of your education with the dollar amount of your graduation bill, because I think the average cost of a private tuition PT programme is like $37,000 a year. Over three years. That's well over $100,000 when you break it down by semester. I mean there's only 16 weeks in a semester and so you're spending $37,000 for a year of of tuition.
