  • Estimating the overall cost of a civil design requires quantifying all of the components. Fortunately, Civil 3D makes quantity extraction easy using the QTO Manager. The QTO Manager represents a one-stop shop for loading pay items, assigning them to objects, and extracting their quantities into reports.
In today’s installment, we’ll explore Civil 3D’s quantity take-off functionality. Designers can use QTO tools to assign pay items to ANY object, even generic AutoCAD entities. Pay items can also be pre-assigned as part of a Civil 3D template, making quantity extraction a virtually automatic process.

sometimes it simply does not want to come out that cloud that says that our object has pay idem attached. I tried to put pay item info in property set, but no success. I needed to get this becouse sometimes we get an error - unable to compute area of hatch entity, so sometimes it is struggle to find out which peace is wrong as warning can only zoom to are around it (where can be many possibly problematic areas), it cant be selected. Any tips what to do in those situations, or better, how to get that pay item property in property of an object. Many tnx.

hi. your video helps me a lot. hope you could help me with this. I'm having trouble calculating coz the requirement should be in metric system. I've changed all my default unit settings but in takeoff it says it is still in english. how do i change this? thanks you.

    Hi Jeff,
Got a quick question for you, in the formulas we can use the {Part Depth}, that refers to what ?
Is it for Pipe network structures since it doesn't take in account corridors and shapes ?
    TIA !

Hi Jeff, Can the "Shape" also be assigned for a pay item? If not, what is the best way to automate the QTO for the volume with this method? Thanks

First off, thank you for the great lessons! Second, when windowing objects to add a pay item, if the item has a pay item assigned, will a duplicate pay item be added if the object is in the selection set; I.e. if you are doing mass striping and you need to additional striping, once complete, you layiso the striping layer and assign a pay item to all objects? In your video you showed multiple pay items on one object, just wondering if the same pay item can be added to an object. Worried about duplicating quantity.

Hi Prof. Jeff.. I want to ask, for the volume of excavation, we can make separate excavations for complementary items such as drainage and separate anchors from the entire excavation. Usually I cut the entire volume, but how do I make a separate volume for each item. Thank you
