But that's point. It even stems from a power of suggestion. Because if you lacked care on the challenge, you might not know about the chocolate's location, but you'd probably see all the other odd stuff thrown in.
The expiriment was originally meant to test how lackluster our attention really is, as many think and truly believe that they collect all information and are impeccably good at retaining information. This video seems to be inspired of the old video, and i knew the "trick" but only managed to see the fifth hand while also trying to keep up with the task. Quite a good retake on a 20 year old psychology experiment.
yeah, that's called "selective attention" you were NOT supposed to look for the other things so you didn't see them but if you looked for them, you would have seen them.
That's the point! The test is simply an experiment pointing out people's ability to focus on one thing even at the cost of missing other things going on. It's like pointing out that we can sometimes miss the forest for the trees if we're told certain things I think?
I actually feel so proud of finding 2/3 changes, probably because I notice colors very easily so as soon as the duck and the cup changes happened I did notice even if I wasn’t really looking. I did not see the 5th hand though since it has the same color as all the other ones so I didn’t see any difference
Left duh. Ugh this is so easy. **Rolls eyes** "Did you see the duck?" Wait there was a duck? "Did you see the 5th hand?" 👁️👄👁️ Also the cups were blue and now green. 🚪🚶🏾♀️
I think i thought "dang there's too many hands here" when the 5th hand appeared but i didn't take note of it cuz i didn't have a reason to and like the other 2 hands, was just there to help move the cups
I was able to notice all the differences because I could track the cup with the Hershey using my peripheral, but if the shuffling was faster, I'd def have no choice but to focus on the cup and I'd miss everything else. I always love these!
Quasar but how many of the other stuff did you get? I lost the chocolate when i noticed the fifth hand shadow on the table. Everything else i observed. What does that mean? I guess if i view the results backwards the conclusion would be the same. Doh! I thought i was special. 😞🤪😆🤘🥂

I also learnt to do this and it works really well. Something about not focusing on the specific cup allows you to see more of the table, so if the cup changes location rapidly, you're less likely to lose track of it due to tunnel vision.

I messed up too the first time and got the second one right. I guessed the one on the right because my eyes knew that it was in the middle but at some point I noticed that both of her hands were covering the cups with the chocolate in it that was on the left and the middle cup and she moved her hands quicker than how she was doing it before by a slight difference. So since I couldn’t see either cup I knew that normally it’d be in the middle but I thought that maybe she decided to do the old “ you think I switched the cup but my hands covered the cups so you don’t realize that they’re actually still in the same place “ I thought that she was trying to be smart and create the illusion that she moved the cups when really it was still in the same place when really I was just overestimating the first round and so I thought it was more difficult than what it really was. But since the round was to guess which one had the chocolate and nothing else the only thing that I looked at was the cup with the chocolate in it and absolutely nothing else so I never realized the rest of the things.
I used to play this A LOT and even since I was a kid, I for some reason I would play looking directly in the middle of all the cups, so my actual eyes weren’t following any of them specifically. I noticed everything going on and still knew where the chocolate was. It’s a good technique for some things, but in general I struggle with focusing on too many things at once😅😁
Same here. I find that it is often much easier to lose the actual cup when you focus too much and the cup gets to slightly of your field of focus or if there is collisions or lapsing between them.
I didn't notice most of the stuff that happened in the second shuffle, but I did actually notice the cups changing colour. However, it didn't click that they'd been swapped, I presumed that the camera/lighting made them look slightly different. So I noticed something was off, but didn't realise till I was told.
Ngl, I actually didn't notice the blue-to-green switcheroo, but I did definitely notice more than the starting 4 hands, even if I wasn't sure of the actual number of them. 10/quack, was definitely got got.
I was focused on the cups and then I saw a duck and then I saw something wrong with the colors and thrn I was like WHERE THE F DID THIS HAND COME FROM while I was keeping track of the choco I don't know how
I got the candies right and noticed the green because at like 1:44 a green one falls over and I was like... oh that's suspicious.. wait.. lol but that's all I got.
@@JinsKookieJams I didn't skip anything. I said the *green* one falling over was suspicious.. as it brought my attention to it. And that's when I realized that there was no green before hence why I noticed the colors changed. Has nothing to do with the pink cups. "-__________-"
QUICK OBSERVATION: I would suggest that next time you do an experiment like this try to mute or turn down the sound when you're mixing the cups, because (I wore headphones) I constantly heard the Hershey's bumping the cup in which in was inside, so even if I loose it from sight when I saw the duck, the hand or the green cups I just needed to listen when you moved one of the pink cups to find it back,
Probably doesn't matter since that isn't really the point of the video. But you could also put different color objects under there and ask the viewer where the white Kiss is, or similar.
I learned from other videos like this that there’s always something you’re not supposed to notice, so I was so proud of myself for noticing the blue cups turn to green cups. And then I realized that there were 2 other things I missed 😂
Same. I was able to easily follow the chocolate and noticed the cups changed color, but at the same time I think because I knew there'd be some sort of change, once I noticed one my brain turned off on looking for anything else.
Same i got the chocolate and saw the duck because the experiment reminded me of the follow the basketball and check if you saw the bear experiment but i didn’t notice the color change or the fifth hand
There was a point in the second test where my attention shifted to the top of the screen, and i thought HECK I might have lost track of the chocolate - I narrowed my attention back and I knew it was one of two cups, then I recalled my peripheral memory and picked which of those two cups I was committing to following the rest of the way. I was frustrated that I let “extra colors and an extra set of hands” throw me like that! I wondered what was wrong with my attention! So yes, I “NOTICED” the duck and the fifth hand, but I did NOT process what they were or that there was a particular thing which drew my attention away from the chocolate. Kind of eerie feeling lol
I saw the screen fill up with hands, which alerted me that some funny business was going on. I did not see the duck, nor did I specifically see the hand with the watch. But seeing the screen filled with hands made me see them change the cups. I also tracked the kiss.
Saw everything besides the color change from blue to green, I noticed green being added but didn't realize you'd remove the blue entirely. I knew there were more than two people though involved because the hands were distinctly different in size. I was pretty proud of myself till I realized you changed all the blues with the greens. You got me.
Ah, i actually beat this test. I saw the duck on the first go. But it's mostly cuz I had just watched another one of these and I knew to look around for details.
reading through thinking, fast and slow and getting to experience how intense focusing can make you blind is amazing. Thank you for producing this material.
saw everything including the color change. When the first pink cup was removed entirely from view I did a quick count and scan of everything, noticing a color change along with an aditional cup, there were 9 on the table but I watched a pink removed from view.
@@JohnFekoloid it's more about how focused you are.... If you only paying partial attention to the chocolate, it's not hard to notice other anomalies.. ...(Thus, even though I saw the duck and color change, I lost the track of the chocolate)
Not only did I guess correctly I also saw the duck the other pair of hands and the different color cups being introduced. Knowing to look for other things helped. (I was able to use the fact that they separated the red cup with the chocolate early to lower my focus on the red cups since I knew which side it was on and required less focus to remember where it was)
The first time I saw a selective attention test it was the classic "count how many times the basketballs bounce" test, and it blew my mind. I showed it to everyone for like six months. Now, a few years later and with knowledge of what a selective attention test is, this one still totally got me lmao. I didn't see the duck or the fifth hand, OR the color change! This is so great. It's incredible how our brains just filter things right out, whether we want them to or not. It really makes you have to wonder, what other important information have I just completely ignored? How can I ever assume I'm functioning on complete information when my brain so readily betrays me!? 😲
It's mostly that you've consciously ignored these facts. However, your subconscious is pretty good at picking up on patterns or small details you likely missed. You end up eventually getting these details later as what we call intuition. For example, you're going to the store and your current focus is on getting to your car so you grab your keys. Whilst driving, you get the feeling like you're forgetting something but you can't quite figure out what you forgot. You get to the store, grab all the things you want to buy, and you reach for your wallet. However, your wallet isn't there, you forgot it. You were focused on actually getting to the store and so you forgot your wallet, but your subconscious picked up on it and "hinted" it towards you
The other important takeaway is that everyone's brain works differently - many people noticed all three changes but immediately lost the chocolate and some people got some or all changes AND followed the chocolate with ease.
I looked at the hands for a bit and I was wondering if there was a 3rd person, thought I was crazy and went back to the cup. The others I didnt notice.
As someone with ADHD, I'm proud to say that I at least somewhat noticed all three things :D I saw the duck for like a split second, and I didn't notice the blue getting switched out for green, but I did see that they got switched at the end. And I was literally thinking at like one or two points that it looked like there were a weirdly high amount of hands, but I didn't realize that it was because they actually did add in another hand.
Yeah actually we should be focused enough to ignore other stuff. Although weirdly I did notice duck and hand but wasn't sure and green cups in end. But I atleast knew where the chocolate was and in my defense Its morning and just took meds so it's gonna take a while.
Same, I have ADHD (diagnosed) and I have two family members who are so similar to me that they VERY much likely also have adhd. All three of us are super observant, and I picked up on all three changes and im sure they would as well. Im not sure if its adhd that gives that super power, because other people with adhd might miss it, but its very interesting to see.
@@Bluewaterbottle well its because adhd is not actually an attention deficit, but more of an attention regulation problem. so yes, adhd does give us that superpower in a sense. that “superpower” is also how we can get distracted so easily, therefore wether or not its a superpower depends on the context lololol
I got all three. Weird trick i learned while playing some video game don't remember which one but it had a cup game and the last round the cups moved to quickly to focus on the one you had to. Anyway the trick is to enter a flow state where you are not focusing but just absorbing all the information without trying to have a goal in mind because it limits the amount of information you absorb. Works great for all sorts of things anyway worked on this
Play enough games with hectic gameplay and you learn to speed read actual vision. You’re taking in a lot of information and absorbing just enough to register everything. I play a souls game and eventually you enter a flow state where you’re not even really seeing the enemy but only registering attacks. It’s like going Ultra Instinct
@@fist-of-doom487True. You also develop this skill when you read loads of books. It makes you a very proficient and efficient reader. It may not be as distracting in a game's environment with enemies being thrown at you, but when you really want your mind to "work like a movie" when reading, you have to minimise the amount of time you spend focusing on a word.
I think that since your so focused on one objective your mind blocks out all other distractions. This can be good and bad, if you're focused on one thing you'll find it. But if it's on noticing danger and your focused on something else, this may take a turn for the worse.
Lol! This was great! I did see the duck, but the basketball gorilla experiment bought me here. But I didn't notice the extra hands until the duck slow-mo, and I totally didn't notice the blue to green cup change until the end. Very impressive!
The implications of this change blindness / attentional blindness is hugely important to motorcycle safety, especially now in this more distracted by devices driving culture. Great video. The original Gorilla experiment was ground breaking.
The conclusions of the original study where they extrapolated the study conclusions to motorcycle safety have been debunked. It has to do with focus and field of vision and although there is a delay in recognizing a difference in the target area you still see the different object. You recognize a motorcycle where you are looking for cars slower but quick enough to avoid the motorcycle. But still an interesting study on tunnel vision.
@@JMan-24 link me up to the debunk. I’ve spoken with Prof Dan Simons on the application of his work on motorcycle safety. I’ve also spent a lot of time on the website “science of being seen”. I’m gonna say you aren’t correct mate.
In this study, if the cup with the chocolate would have been changed to a different color or replaced with the duck, we would have all noted it. So it has to do with field of vision more than something something out of the ordinary happening. I’ll look for the other study again, but it’s out there. The studies are all terrific just that parallel conclusion about motorcycles was off.

Jozh i messed up the first one because i got distracted by the duck XD
the duck distracted me from the chocolate bro😭😭

This is so stupid cause it is irrelevant
I used to play this A LOT and even since I was a kid, I for some reason I would play looking directly in the middle of all the cups, so my actual eyes weren’t following any of them specifically. I noticed everything going on and still knew where the chocolate was. It’s a good technique for some things, but in general I struggle with focusing on too many things at once😅😁
omg sameee it really helps to observe many things at once
I only use this in piano tiles hahaha. Those were the days
same
Same here. I find that it is often much easier to lose the actual cup when you focus too much and the cup gets to slightly of your field of focus or if there is collisions or lapsing between them.
Sameeeee
Me: Yes!! I got both right!
Also me: **Insert dissapointed meme guy here**

How did I get so many like in a day.
I didn't notice most of the stuff that happened in the second shuffle, but I did actually notice the cups changing colour. However, it didn't click that they'd been swapped, I presumed that the camera/lighting made them look slightly different. So I noticed something was off, but didn't realise till I was told.
The only thing I didn't notice was the extra hand.

Man I was focused on tracking the red cups i didnt notice anything.
I was focused on the cups and then I saw a duck and then I saw something wrong with the colors and thrn I was like WHERE THE F DID THIS HAND COME FROM while I was keeping track of the choco
I don't know how
I was staring at the cup, but saw these things out my peripheral and some distant part of my brain was 'wtf'

Two pairs of hands? There was a fifth hand.

Got the right cup for the chocolate, saw the duck, and noticed the change in colors for the cups.
The fifth hand was too subtle for me though.
I only noticed the color of the cups changed but that's it.

"-__________-"

this was an excellent recreation. Loved how you went the extra mile to post friends and family reactions. 10/10
I was literally only following the cup and nothing else
QUICK OBSERVATION:
I would suggest that next time you do an experiment like this try to mute or turn down the sound when you're mixing the cups, because (I wore headphones) I constantly heard the Hershey's bumping the cup in which in was inside, so even if I loose it from sight when I saw the duck, the hand or the green cups I just needed to listen when you moved one of the pink cups to find it back,
Probably doesn't matter since that isn't really the point of the video. But you could also put different color objects under there and ask the viewer where the white Kiss is, or similar.
@@nothayley except it is the point of the video. not needing to focus on the cup makes noticing all the changes so much easier.
@@bigbongus4908 yeah but the first time people have no reason to not focus on the cup even if they can do that "trick".
That's how I did it.
There's also a bit of a dent in it

Ez test
It was the opposite for me. I noticed the duck and the hand but didn’t see the cups changing colour somehow😅😅😅
Same for me but I just got the duck

nah i got them all
@@elferson really?... Congrats I gues

For what it’s worth, I have severe ADHD, so my attention is not that of a neurotypical person. Unrelated, forgot to say: VERY well-done video!
I saw the fifth hand, the cups change colour and one of the cups get dropped and turned over but I didn't see the duck.
I saw the cup falling over and that was it
I just missed the colour change and it infuriates me

I didn't see anything, I was just reading comments.
Same. I am just listening to the audio.
As someone with ADHD, I'm proud to say that I at least somewhat noticed all three things :D
I saw the duck for like a split second, and I didn't notice the blue getting switched out for green, but I did see that they got switched at the end. And I was literally thinking at like one or two points that it looked like there were a weirdly high amount of hands, but I didn't realize that it was because they actually did add in another hand.
Strange that someone else said as someone with adhd they are proud they ignored the other random stuff
Yeah actually we should be focused enough to ignore other stuff. Although weirdly I did notice duck and hand but wasn't sure and green cups in end. But I atleast knew where the chocolate was and in my defense Its morning and just took meds so it's gonna take a while.
same
Same, I have ADHD (diagnosed) and I have two family members who are so similar to me that they VERY much likely also have adhd.
Works great for all sorts of things anyway worked on this
Has to be that Wii Party minigame with the cups, I used to love that one
Yeah same! I saw all 3 aswell! I was so proud of myself
4 3 2 player games?
I got them all right and saw the duck and even the extra hand. but I didn’t notice the colors switched lmao

theres no gorilla in the video, yeah?
I saw the duck, but I still asked
"Whys there a duck?"

I think that since your so focused on one objective your mind blocks out all other distractions. This can be good and bad, if you're focused on one thing you'll find it. But if it's on noticing danger and your focused on something else, this may take a turn for the worse.
I didn't even get it right I thought It was in. The yellow cup because iw as just looking at the duck and the colors chsnging

2:20 the duck actually made me lose the round lol, distracted me
The implications of this change blindness / attentional blindness is hugely important to motorcycle safety, especially now in this more distracted by devices driving culture.
As soon as I read the "selective attention" in the title I knew something was going to be up by the end so I locked in and ended up catching all 3 things.
