Hair, fur and wool are good for mulching: Not only do they protect the soil (as all mulch does), but they also discourage slugs. Not for use on vegetables, of course, but you can use it on shrubs, flowers and trees.
Yes, I could try this at some stage SP 👍 I think though that the only difference it will make is that the hair bits will be harder to see - and so it might look like they have disappeared faster. From all my reading, it seems keratin just takes a long time to break down!
I'm curious about your worms. Are they red wigglers? And if so, did you buy them or was it more like, "If you feed them, they will come?" Also, do you have any problems with ants or any anything else getting into them? Thank you for your interesting videos. I get a lot of enjoyment out of watching them.
Thanks for your comments Amy :) I think there's a mixture of breeds - and I'm not sure how to identify them! They are naturally occurring and basically just appear and multiply very quickly when the conditions are right ie. cool damp dark spots with food! I guess it depends on your area and soil as to what worms appear..
@@TheUltimateRecycler So probably not, interestingly the "red wigglers" people are selling are often several species that aren't true red wigglers. IE Jims Worm Farm sells a completely different species and I am pretty sure I bought a similar species from an ebay seller for much lower price and much better reviews. They arrived alive and give great castings, and actually multiply extremely fast I start a new bin or layer when my scrap collector (coffee can in freezer) but I hear they have less tolerance to cold. Worms are tricky to ID so a few species look like red wigglers but mine were a hell of a lot cheaper than Jim's and all came alive, I guess I shouldn't be surprised they are a different species. High quality castings and leachate that my plants love (I hear sometimes it kills plants, opposite here but sometimes if they are airtight they get rancid I would never put that on my plants if leachate has a stink to it.) Maybe I'll try nightcrawlers at some point or just mix them in there. Seems its more dependent of the food you give them. Also thanks for this, I have been adding a lot of hair after hearing it is okay but it I mix it into the food more, probably would be good idea to cut it too but maybe I'll stop putting ALL my cats hair and my hair in there. I have read its a good place for them to lay eggs when deeper and damper but I didn't realize the breakdown was this slow. I think mixed in more its better but still I am now finding hair in "completed" castings.

Yep - it's certainly not harmful in any way, so as a mulch it would be fine 😊
Love these experiments! Can we get one with cooked vs raw veggies scraps? Been curious about that for a while
That's something that wasn't on my list Ky! It is now 😊👍
@@TheUltimateRecycler Here's another one while you're taking suggestions - wonder how a raw egg would do? Or even raw vs cooked again?
Would love it if you tested this with smaller hair bits eg after a shave, I wonder if smaller lengths would make a difference?

I cut my "lockdown beard" off today, the clippings are going in the worm bin tomorrow morning.
2:35 i think they were just using it as bedding because it was freshly washed and smelt good? lol
Haha, yep looks like they were just lounging around having a beer! 🤣
