- We are setting out our longline gear for halibut. Each set is between 10 and 15 shots per set, or approximately 1- 1.5 miles long. Each shot is 100 fathoms long ( that's 600 feet for you landlubbers), with a hook spaced every 15-20 feet or so.
Our longline reel holds about 35 shots, so close to 4 miles of line, and on an average day, we will set and haul 30 to 50 shots of gear.

That is a pretty clever device to keep your hands safe. Whenever i see someone baiting a longline, it makes me think of john c. reilly getting hooked through the hand in that movie 'The Perfect Storm'.
Yeah we’ve seen that one a few times, scary thought for sure. Feels a lot safer setting out this way, there are a few guys on youtube that snap on without a chute and I inwardly cringe every hook.
Glad to see there’s still some line fishery done in a professional way and not all is nets. It’s important to know the source of your sea food and fish. A little “seaspiracy” debunk is all I need

After playing Fishing: North Atlantic i always wondered how longlining works, i never knew that you would actually apply the hooks to the longline haha, video games sure are different from real life

What’s the biggest halibut you’ve ever caught ? And is it only halibut you catch?
Over 400 pounds when I crewed on other boats. On our vessel maybe 120 pounds. We also fish crab, jig for cod and rockfish and seine for salmon.
Have you ever tried mono leaders ?
We haven't. The issue would be if they get twisted up they are basically ruined. Even some of our poly twine leaders get twisted that have swivels on the snap. The green twine is very durable and holds up well to both chafing, twisting, and hockling.
Next vid you do please show the clip that attaches to your mainline. Just curious as to now it clamps on.......

About how long does it take to make one of those sets?
Usually it takes around 15-20 minutes for a 10 shot set (1.1 miles). We usually set at around 3.5 knots.

That's true. I usually notice it more when I haul from the opposite end.
I am very curious as to the way you are attaching the hooks to the long line and then removing them on retrieval of the long line. I am not a fisherman but I am a curious person. Thanks you for any answer you share with me.
Hi Randy. If you google longline snap it will show a good image of the snap. You just squeeze it and it opens the end allowing you to clip it on the longline. Removal is the opposite. Simple system, that holds well and under most conditions will not come off.

Tie a pole in the back of the boat about 8 ft an tie your bird line to it ? Up in the air won’t snag your gear when setting

why wouldn't you tie a knot where you place the clip at???I'd think the fish would get tangled up in the rest of the lines on the mainline

Hi. Google "stainless steel longline snaps", they clip on the mainline. You can buy them from marine fishing supply stores.

The Browns are in Washington... and their Alaska location is in the Southeast....I have a friend that knows them, she doesn’t like them.... has tons of stories about them that makes them seem like bigger idiots than the TV show makes them out to be (and I thought the show made them all out to be “SpecialNeeds.”)

What is the name of the knot onto which he ties the sheet bend?
Hi Lauren. I can't seem to find this knot anywhere. The fisherman that taught me it called it a bowline in a bight, but I know that is not the correct name.
The way he ties it looks kinda funky but the knot itself looks very much like a directional figure-8 loop/inline figure-8 loop...

Do you ever bait the hooks while you are snapping them?
Hi Mike. We bait up before we set, because usually it's just Matt setting the gear. If fishing is slow, or we plan on setting back we will rebait when we are hauling gear.

Yeah they are great for attaching/ detaching shots of line, and really nice when using a reel, because they lay flat and don't create a big lump like a knot would. Thanks for the comments and watching.
